Asda, along with several other UK supermarkets, having already taken pre-orders for the book at a heavily discounted price, sparked a price war two days before the book’s launch by announcing they would sell it for just £5 a copy. Other retail chains then also offered the book at discounted prices. At these prices the book became a loss leader. This caused uproar from traditional UK booksellers who argued they had no hope of competing in those conditions. Independent shops protested loudest, but even Waterstone’s, the UK’s largest dedicated chain bookstore, could not compete with the supermarket price. Some small bookstores hit back by buying their stock from the supermarkets rather than their wholesalers. Asda attempted to counter this by imposing a limit of two copies per customer to prevent bulk purchases. Philip Wicks, a spokesman for the UK Booksellers Association, said, “It is a war we can’t even participate in. We think it’s a crying shame that the supermarkets have decided to treat it as a loss-leader, like a can of baked beans.” Michael Norris, an analyst at Simba Information, said: “You are not only lowering the price of the book. At this point, you are lowering the value of reading.”

$100 Million: Robert Pattinson

Although Pattinson did appear in Goblet of Fire as the ill-fated Cedric Diggory, most of his fame comes from his starring role as Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga. Together, the five vampire love story films in the series have made over $3 billion a small chunk of change compared to Harry Potters seven billion, but still quite a lot.

Outside of Harry Potter and Twilight, Pattinson has also starred in the drama Cosmopoliswith Paul Giamatti, the romance Remember Me with Losts Emilie de Ravin, and opposite Reese Witherspoon in the book adaptation Water for Elephants. Pattinson also plays his own music, writing songs and playing the guitar and piano. Two of his songs were featured in Twilight, and they have also been featured in the Pattinson-starring comedy How to Be.

International Box Office: Grindelwald Has Quarter Billion Dollar Global Debut

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald started its international run with $191.5 million on 50,865 screens in 79 markets for a worldwide debut of $253.7 million. Its largest opening was in China, but it had to settle for second place there with $36.68 million on 22,008 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $37.53 million. It had more impressive debuts in the U.K. and in Russia . The film had the best opening in the Harry Potter franchise in 21 markets, but overall, it was only 3% ahead of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in the same markets. Its much weaker reviews will likely lead to shorter legs, but even so, it should still have no problem getting to $600 million worldwide and becoming Warner Bros. biggest hit of the year. We learn that Snape was not, in fact, part of the evil plan but Professor Quirrell, who Voldemort had inhabited the body of for survival after trying to kill Harry 11 years ago.
