How To Introduce The Harry Potter Series To Children:

Step 1: Read the Illustrated Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone together out loud, stopping to really absorb the illustrations and chat about the book as you go.

Step 2: Allow the opportunity for your child to re-read book 1 in a non-illustrated version on his or her own. The complex vocabulary will have better context, you’ve already discussed the plot and it’s implications. Now they can absorb it all over again on their own with better comprehension.

Step 4: Let go and allow your child to finish the series on their own. The Peanut already knows that by book 4 terrible things start to happen. She’s not ready for that yet but perhaps she will be by the time she finishes book 3 in the next few months. Be prepared to step in and hit a virtual pause button at any point if you feel your child is getting to the intense books a little too quickly. We had to wait YEARS for the series to finally be published, a little anticipation won’t harm your child.

A Note On Controversy

Like so many of the best things in this world, there is controversy surrounding a few aspects of the Harry Potter series. When the books were first released, the biggest controversy revolved around the elements of fantasy and witchcraft in Harry Potter. Of course, the witchcraft is no secret- Harry Potter is a wizard, after all. And in the early books, the majority of the magic is innocent and fairly vague.

The later books in the series admittedly are a bit darker and tend to handle more discussion of dark arts, especially when talking about Voldemorts acts, and the acts of his followers. There is discussion of murder as well. So, for several reasons, Harry Potter is listed as a banned book by many schools and organizations.

But this definitely doesnt mean that it is inappropriate for all children, and ultimately the decision to allow your children to read the books lies with you and your comfort level surrounding topics of magic, witchcraft, and later, concepts of good vs. evil and morality.

More recent controversy surrounding the series has revolved less around the content and characters of the books, but rather on the personal views and biases of series author J.K. Rowling.

In response to a recent series of social media posts by the author, she has been labeled a TERF due to mocking comments she made regarding trans-positive language and transgender rights.

What Age Group Is Harry Potter For

As a whole, the series is generally considered to be an appropriate read for children from the ages of 9-12 and above. The Harry Potter age rating depends however both on the kid and the parents. While some children may be ready to understand and enjoy Harrys adventures from an even younger age, theres a chance for others to need a little more time to mentally develop before the series becomes an appropriate read.

Its worth noting that Harry Potter is 11 years old in the first book and is presented as 17 year old in the last one. Considering that it is a well known fact that children enjoy reading about heroes close to their own age, its probably good to take this into account when youre organizing your childs .

The generation of children who enjoyed the books one by one as they were being released between 1997 and 2007 have actually managed to enjoy the story and relatively stay in the same age group as Harry throughout the timeframe in which the books were released.

Being one of the lucky ones who caught the series developing, I can confirm that reading the books one year or more apart has been an amazing experience. Each book presents Harry Potter at a different age and being relatively the same age as the hero has been great. I was able to relate to all the changes in Harrys relationships, the way he thought and even understand his friendships and rivalries better.

The Harry Potter Films

The Harry Potter books have been made into eight films which were released between 2001 and 2011.

The films star English actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in the leading roles of Harry Potter and his best friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.

The films are terrific for adults and for children although, as with the books, they get progressively darker and more scary with more adult themes as you progress through the series. With that in mind, it can be a good idea to watch them yourself before you introduce your younger children to them.
