The Lead-up to the Attack
1978
Lily Evans and James Potter finish Hogwarts and immediately go to work for The Order of the Phoenix . Voldemort tried to recruit them to be Death Eaters , but both were defiant. Lily and James probably got married in the Summer or Fall of 1978, though it could have been as late as the summer of 1979.
Fall 1979
Sybill Trelawney makes a prophecy to Albus Dumbledore about a child to be born in July of that year. Partially overheard by a Death Eater, Severus Snape, who reports what he heard to Voldemort.
circa October 1979
Lily becomes pregnant with Harry, and both she and James go into hiding because of the prophecy .
Two children are born who fit the prophecys criteria: Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom. Dumbledore knows that they are in danger, but hesitates to act until he knows more about what Voldemort might do.

Severus Snape discovers that Lily and her infant son have been targeted by Voldemort, has a crisis of conscience, and tells Albus Dumbledore. Snape offers his allegiance to Dumbledore in exchange for protection for Lily and is given the position of Hogwarts Potions Master.

How Did Lord Voldemort Die Even Though Harry Potter Survived
If Harry Potter was himself a horcrux, then why did Voldemort die even though Harry was alive? I understand that Voldemort’s spell-“Avda kedavra” was ineffective against Harry, because of the Elder Wand. Did that short period death of Harry fulfill the criteria to destroy the horcrux that resided in his soul? If the horcrux was inside his soul then how is it possible to destroy part of Harry’s soul when he had never killed anyone like Voldemort did?

As Dumbledore explains in the movie:
On the night Lord Voldemort went to Godric’s Hollow to kill Harry and Lily Potter cast herself between them the curse rebounded. When that happened, a part of Voldemort’s soul latched itself onto the only living thing it could find: Harry himself. There ‘s a reason Harry can speak with snakes. There’s a reason he can look into Lord Voldemort’s mind. A part of Voldemort lives inside him.
That part was killed by Voldemort himself:
Harry: Professor, what is that? Dumbledore: Something beyond either of our help. A part of Voldemort sent here to die.
Voldemort Ultimately Decided That Harry Potter Was The Chosen One
As we learn in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” Sybill Trelawney made a prophecy that only a child “born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies” would have the power to vanquish Lord Voldemort. But the identity of that child was not always clear.
Both Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom fit that description, but Voldemort ultimately decided to go after Harry, who was a half-blood like himself, cementing Harry’s fate as “the chosen one.”

His Greatest Fear Was His Own Death
Boggarts are magical shape-shifters that transform into whatever a witch or wizard fears the most.
In a 2005 interview with the fan site Mugglenet, Rowling said that Voldemort’s greatest fear is “ignominious death,” and if he ever encountered a boggart, he would probably see his own lifeless body.
Even without this insight, it is clear that Voldemort does everything in his power including fragmenting his soul seven times throughout the series to live up to his name and beat death.

Gregorovitch is a wandmaker, Europe’s equivalent to Ollivander. And he makes a brief appearance in the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 blockbuster, dying via Voldemort’s hand after revealing the Elder Wand had been stolen from him many years previously.

What Happened When Voldemort Tried To Kill Harry

Voldemort was not able to kill Harry because Harry was the true master of the Elder Wand. So, therefore, Harry survived. Instead, Voldemort unknowingly made himself more vulnerable by trying to kill Harry since instead, he destroyed the Horcrux inside Harry. Harry ended up going to a kind of in-between place, where he meets Dumbledore and Voldemort is temporarily knocked out as well.
Harry is also still somewhat protected by his mothers love for him. And this is all Voldemorts own doing. When he was rebuilding his body during Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, he used Harrys blood to do so. Therefore, he took some of Lilys protection into himself.

Albania Was An Important Place To Voldemort Before He Hid There In The Wake Of The First Wizarding War
Most fans probably remember that the bodiless remains of Voldemort hid in an Albanian forest to regain strength after he was defeated by baby Harry in the First Wizarding War.
He also returned to the same forest after his host body, Professor Quirrell, was killed in “Sorcerer’s Stone.”
Although it is never exactly revealed why Voldemort chose that location as a hiding place, it does hold a certain significance to him. The first time visited Albania his mission was to retrieve the lost diadem of Rowena Ravenclaw which her daughter Helena had revealed to be hidden in a forest there in order to create one of his seven Horcruxes.
A Horcrux is a powerful, dark object that contains a piece of a witch or wizard’s soul and keeps that soul fragment alive regardless of their body’s fate.
Why He Wanted To Make Horcruxes From The Hogwarts Founders Items
There is never really an explanation given in the films as to why Voldemort chose to use items that once belonged to the Hogwarts founders. For example, he uses Ravenclaws diadem and Hufflepuffs cup. Dumbledore and others in the novels believe this is likely a result of his vanity and feeling of self-importance, choosing to use valuable items rather than innocuous ones.

This could have been any child born at that time to parents who already fought Voldemort. But how did he find out about the prophecy? Severus Snape was still working for Voldemort during this time and was spying on Dumbledore. As Snape proceeded to report to Voldemort, he didnt even realize what he has started.
Like Voldemort, Harry was a half-blood, and his mother as well. Voldemort was keen on keeping the wizarding world free of half-bloods even if he was one himself. So killing James Potter wasnt really a part of his plan until it became necessary.
Only later do we find out how in love with Lily Potter Snape was. So he came to Dumbledore and offered him complete loyalty in exchange for protection for the Potters. It was something he could not ask Voldemort to do for him.

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Voldemort furthers his quest for ultimate power. He disposes of the Minister for Magic and replaces him with Pius Thicknesse, who is under the Imperius Curse. Establishing a totalitarianpolice state, he has Muggle-borns persecuted and arrested for “stealing magic” from the “pure blood” wizards. After failing to kill Harry with Draco’s father Lucius Malfoy‘s borrowed wand , he goes on a murderous search for the Elder Wand, the most powerful wand ever created, seeing it as the weapon he needs to overcome Harry’s wand and make him truly invincible. He goes on a quest that takes him out of the country to Gregorovitch‘s wand shop, where he kills the old wandmaker. His journey also takes him to Nurmengard, the prison where Gellert Grindelwald is kept, and he kills Grindelwald as well. He finally locates the Elder Wand and steals it from Dumbledore’s tomb.
Rowling stated that after his death, Voldemort is forced to exist in the stunted infant-like form that Harry sees in the King’s Cross-like Limbo after his confrontation with Voldemort in the Forbidden Forest. Rowling also mentioned that, despite his extreme fear of death, he cannot become a ghost.

Why Didnt Harry Die As A Baby
Having overheard a prophecy by Professor Trelawney which foretold that a boy born in July would become his ‘equal’, Voldemort arrives at Godrics Hollow specifically to kill Harry Potter. First, he performs the Killing Curse on James Potter. But just as hes about to do the same to Harry, Lily steps in the way to protect her son and is killed by Voldemort. But that still leaves Harry vulnerable to a subsequent attack and while an attempt is made, it doesnt work, and instead, the Killing Curse backfires.
Harry is left with a rather impressive souvenir – his infamous lightning bolt scar. Voldemort, on the other hand, is left without a body. Of course, we know that Voldemort leaves Harry with more than the lightning bolt, but well talk about that a bit later. So why doesnt Harry die from the Killing Curse? At the end of Sorcerers Stone, we learn from Dumbledore that Lily used a counter charm to protect Harry before Voldemort performed the Killing Curse on her, leaving her son with love-based protection.
Why Didnt Harry Die When Voldemort Died
We all know how the final fight ends while Harry and Voldemort duel with their wands, Neville Longbottom successfully lays waste to Nagini using the Sword of Gryffindor, destroying Voldemorts final Horcrux. But this isnt what ultimately defeats Voldemort though of course without killing Nagini, killing Voldemort would have remained impossible. But Voldemort is now simply left vulnerable to death, like any other witch or wizard. He is mortal.
With the final Horcrux out of the way, Harry is able to defeat the dark lord once and for all, while also disarming him of the Elder Wand a weapon that never really belonged to Voldemort in the first place, which is why it never worked for him properly. And so Voldemort is dust. But why didnt Harry die along with him? Wasnt Harry one of his Horcruxes? Yes he was, but remember that that part of him had already been destroyed by Voldemort in Harry had no reason to die with Voldemort there was no remaining connection between the two.
