Is Umbridge A Hufflepuff
So no, Umbridge is no where near a Hufflepuff. Umbridge doesnt value loyalty; in fact her loyalty to Fudge is merely in service to her own ambition, and her false hope that he could come to love her as a result. She also was decidedly UNloyal to her own actual family. She is not the least bit fair.
Nymphadora Tonks’s Unusual Name Doesn’t Hint At Her Shape
You’d think that if Rowling went through such lengths to come up with “Nymphadora,” then she’d make it a reference to Tonks being a;Metamorphmagus, or someone who can naturally magically change their appearance. “Nymphadora” seems to reference nymphs, who were instead divine, beautiful figures in Greek mythology that inhabited streams and forests.
To “tonk” is a slang term for striking something. Tonks is one of the testiest members of The Order of the Phoenix, always fighting Death Eaters.
Minerva Mcgonagall’s Name Is A Joke About A Terrible English Poet
Minerva is the Roman name for Athena, goddess of wisdom and justice, which suits the Hogwarts professor’s values.
As for the last name? It’s a jokey reference to;William McGonagall, who the Independent called “the worst poet in the English language.”
“William McGonagall is celebrated as the worst poet in British history,” Rowling wrote on Pottermore. “There was something irresistible to me about his name, and the idea that such a brilliant woman might be a distant relative of the buffoonish McGonagall.”

Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone
Hermione first appears in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone when she meets Harry and Ron on the Hogwarts Express, where she mocks Ron for his inability to perform a spell to turn his rat yellow. She proves just how much she knows by declaring that she memorized all the textbooks by heart. She constantly annoys her peers with her knowledge, so Harry and Ron initially consider her arrogant, especially after she criticises Ron’s incantation of the Levitation Charm. They heartily dislike her until they rescue her from a troll, for which she is so thankful that she lies to protect them from punishment, thus winning their friendship. Hermione’s knack for logic later enables the trio to solve a puzzle that is essential to retrieving the Philosopher’s Stone, and she defeats the constrictive Devil’s Snare plant by summoning a jet of “bluebell flame”.
Hermione is the brains behind the plan to enter the place where the Stone is hidden. She responds to Harry’s wariness of Professor Severus Snape and is also suspicious of him. She reveals to Harry and Ron that she does a lot of research in the library, which helped her defeat the Devil’s Snare and work out the logic of the potions.
Rowling said on her website that she resisted her editor’s requests to remove the troll scene, stating “Hermione is so very arrogant and annoying in the early part of Philosopher’s Stone that I really felt it needed something huge to bring her together with Harry and Ron.”
Yaxley The Secret Keeper
Does taking someone into the fidelius charm make them a secret keeper? I guess this is not supposed to work like that, wouldn’t it just make the protected place visible to the person? It’s actually a bit confusing since later Harry was wondering about other Death Eaters into Grimmauld 12. So is Yaxley a secret keeper? —Gato1985 14:06, 16 June 2009

New Potions professor Horace Slughorn invites Hermione to join his “Slug Club”, and she helps Ron retain his spot on the Gryffindor Quidditch team when she casts a confund spell on Cormac McLaggen, causing him to miss his last save attempt during Keeper tryouts. Hermione’s feelings for Ron continue to grow and she decides to make a move by inviting him to Slughorn’s Christmas Party, but he romances Lavender instead in retaliation for his belief that Hermione had kissed Krum years earlier. She attempts to get even by dating McLaggen at the Christmas party, but her plan goes awry and she abandons him midway through the party. Ron and Hermione continually feud with each other until he suffers a near-fatal poisoning from tainted mead, which frightens her enough to reconcile with him. Following Dumbledore’s death, Ron and Hermione both vow to stay by Harry’s side regardless of what happens. A minor subplot in the book is that Hermione and Harry form a rivalry in Potions, as Hermione is used to coming first in her subjects and is angered that Harry outperforms her undeservedly by following tips and different instructions written in the margins of Harry’s potions book by the previous owner. Hermione is also the only one of the trio to successfully pass her Apparition test .
Dolores Jane Umbridge Is One Of The Most Despised Characters Rowling Ever Invented
Rowling modeled her most detestable character after a teacher she hated, as she wrote in Pottermore. Her name is a reflection of her characteristics.
“Umbridge’s names were carefully chosen,” Rowling wrote.
‘Dolores’ means sorrow, something she undoubtedly inflicts on all around her. ‘Umbridge’ is a play on ‘umbrage’ from the British expression ‘to take umbrage’, meaning offence. Dolores is offended by any challenge to her limited world-view; I felt her surname conveyed the pettiness and rigidity of her character. It is harder to explain ‘Jane’; it simply felt rather smug and neat between her other two names.

Rowling Liked Bartemius Crouch So Much That She Used It Twice
Crouch Senior and Junior are two significant characters in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” “Bartimeaus” is New Testament figure, a blind man healed by Jesus. The name could be ironic, since Barty Crouch Sr. didn’t realize his son was;impersonating Mad-Eye Moody. “Crouch” is a common last name derived from “cross.”
Argus Filch The Caretaker Of Hogwarts Is Always Keeping A Lookout For Those Pesky Kids
In Greek mythology, Argus was a;giant;hundred-eyed watchman.;Like Filch in the “Harry Potter” novels, he seemed to be able to see anything, even the conversations held in obscure corridors in the castle. “Filch” is British slang for casual stealing, which has less obvious connections to Filch’s character.

Physical Description And Traits Section
A little while ago, I added a reference to Hermione being considered “pretty” at the Yule Ball in 1994. This was removed, and I agree with the editor’s comment that it was poorly worded. However, I do think something along those lines would be relevant under that section. It is called “Physical Description and Traits”, after all, and similar remarks can be found in the articles for Ginny Weasley and Luna Lovegood, for instance. Furthermore, later books seem to indicate that Hermione would be considered pretty as well; in DH, this is shown at least three times from three very different viewpoints. Ron says she “looks great” at Bill and Fleur’s wedding; Muggle men at Tottenham Court Road wolf-whistle at her and one offers to buy her a drink; Fenrir Greyback refers to her as “your pretty little friend”. Thus, I think it’s an established physical trait.184.108.40.206 04:31, 11 February 2008
- I agree. Usually, two such sections would be called for – one “Physical description” which would describe her appearance and they way others percieve her. The second section, “Personality and traits” would deal with her personality and other aspects of her character. – Cavalier One 08:54, 11 February 2008
- I’ve taken a stab at writing it as two separate sections, but it might need a little refining. 220.127.116.11 05:35, 16 February 2008

What Happened To Hermiones Cat Crookshanks
It is unknown what became of Crookshanks after Hermione was forced to abandon him during the attack at the Burrow in 1997. Hermione did not bring him along on the Horcrux Hunt. Most likely, Crookshanks stayed in the Burrow under the Weasleys care until he could be reunited with Hermione after the war.
Evidence She Kept Her Maiden Name
We know that Ginny took Harry’s last name upon marriage because the epilogue of Deathly Hallows describes her as one of “the five Potters.” But I think I may have found evidence that Hermione kept her maiden name: on the title page of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, it says “Translated from the original runes by Hermione Granger,” but we know that Hermione would’ve been married by the time the book was released in December 2008, given that Rose would’ve had to be born in either 2005 or 2006 to go off to Hogwarts for the first time in September 2017. Any thoughts? ?Starstuff 20:44, 4 June 2009

Why J K Rowling Settled On The Name Hermione
Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone
Rowling took the name Hermione from The Winters Tale. While Shakespeares play influenced her choice of name, Rowling doesnt feel there are many similarities between her Hermione and Shakespeares. Shakespeares Hermione is falsely accused of adultery, something that doesnt happen to Rowlings Hermione in any book or film. What a plot that would be!
Rowling didnt just choose the name Hermione because she was influenced by Shakespeare. She also wanted a name for her character that was very uncommon. Why? She knew if she gave the character a common name, girls would be teased for having her characters name. According to Insider, Rowling explained she didnt want a lot of fairly hard-working little girls to be teased if ever the book was published.
Rowlings thought process behind the name was certainly thoughtful. No child wants to be teased for their name. However, Harry and Ron are fairly common names. One can only wonder why Rowling didnt choose to give her male protagonists more unique names.
Rufus Scrimgeour Wasn’t Afraid To Take On Voldemort
In the books, Scrimgeour replaced Fudge and Pius Thicknesse as the Minister for Magic one who tried to hunt down Voldemort head on instead of cowering before it. The name makes sense. “Scrimgeor” is a Scottish clan name derived from a phase that means “someone who skirmishes.”;”Rufus” comes from the Latin;word meaning “red-haired.”

Why Did Ron And Hermione Name Their Son Hugo
Hugo Granger-Weasley was born about two years after his older sister Rose. Like Rose, he was also attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was sorted into Gryffindor house.
To fit into the red-hair Weasley family, Hugos brown hair, from the books, became red in the movies. Hugo appeared in the series, actually in the movie Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows: Part 2, and he was portrayed by Ryan Turner, an English teen actor.
Hugo is a Latinised form of the Germanic or Teutonic name Hugh, meaning bright in spirit and mind or simply intelligence. One of the most famous bearers of this name is the French novelist and poet Victor Hugo, which works J. K. Rowling admitted to loving.;
We are familiar with the fact that Hugos mother Hermione was a book lover, so it is possible she enjoyed Victor Hugos work as well, enough to name her son after him. Likewise, it would not be strange that Hermione wanted to anger her husband Ron by naming her son after Viktor Krum, a Bulgarian wizard from the Durmstrang Institute. Ron never forgave her for being his partner on the famous Yule Ball.
Ron: No way our son is going to be named Victor!
Hermione: Why not? Oh, I see, you are still jealous of Victor Krum. I mean still after all these years? Honestly Ron, grow up!
Ron: My answer is still no.
Hermione: How about Hugo Victor then?
Ron: Fine, but then our daughter will be Rose Lavender.
