Wb Reportedly Considering Rebooting Harry Potter For Hbo Max
It wasnt a surprise when it was confirmed that HBO Max were actively inviting pitches for streaming projects set in the Harry Potter universe, when the brand continues to be one of Warner Bros. highest-earning and most marketable properties, even a decade after Daniel Radcliffe ended his stint as The Boy Who Lived.
As well as the expanded Wizarding World hauling in well over $9 billion at the box office, the merchandising empire perpetually brings in serious cash on annual basis. The Fantastic Beasts spinoff series might be struggling to keep its head above water just two movies in with another three still to go, but you can guarantee WB will keep milking the incredibly lucrative cash cow for as long as possible.
Why Harry Potter Fans Should Get Hbo Max Asap
In 1997, author J.K. Rowling published her very first book about the Wizarding World: “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” To say the title took off would be an understatement, as kids across the globe found themselves infatuated with her fictional realm of witchcraft and wizardry prompting Rowling to keep the stories coming. July of 2007 saw the completion of the seven-novel “Harry Potter” saga with “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” but the popularity of the property endured all the same. Naturally, Hollywood kept close tabs on this and made its move to cash-in as soon as possible.
“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” arrived at the cinema in 2001, starring future megastars Daniel Radcliffe in the title role, Emma Watson as the bright Hermione Granger, and Rupert Grint as the timid Ron Weasley. This trio stuck around for a decade as Warner Bros. played catch-up with Rowling’s written works, resulting in the “Harry Potter” film franchise ultimately concluding in 2011 with its eighth installment, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.” Now a decade removed from that premiere and nearly a decade and a half since the books wrapped up moviegoers and bookworms alike are still in love with the entire series.

When Is The Harry Potter Hbo Max Shows Release Date
There is no word yet when HBO Max may be looking to premiere its live-action Harry Potter series. However, given how invested Warner Bros. is in buffing out the streaming service, the studio probably wants to get the series on the platform as soon as possible .
The show is in “early development,” according to Variety. So if things move extremely quickly, we could see a pilot episode by early 2022, but late 2022 or even early 2023 is probably more likely.

All Eight ‘harry Potter’ Movies Are Returning To Hbo Max In June But Probably Not For Long
When HBO Max launched, fans had access to all eight of the films in the Harry Potter movie series in the service’s streaming library. However, the Wizarding World movies were only available for a few months due to a separate deal for the streaming and broadcast rights that was struck back in 2016. But fans looking for a little magic in their streaming services will be happy to hear that the Harry Potter movies are once again coming to HBO Max. But for how long?
HBO Max sent out their list of titles coming to the streaming service in June. Alongside the blockbuster debuts of In the Heights and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, all eight of the Harry Potter films will be back in the streaming library. However, the press release specifically notes that they will be available on the platform starting on and lasting through . That would seem to imply that they might only be sticking around HBO Max for a month, and these short windows of availability are probably the new normal.
Back in 2016, Disney lost out on the streaming and broadcast rights to the Harry Potter movies after holding them for roughly 15 years. NBCUniversal swept in and offered more money, shifting the movies over to channels like Syfy and USA. So when the streaming wars were heating up, HBO Max wasn’t going to be able to stream one of WarnerMedia’s biggest film franchises, and NBCUniversal was going to reap the benefits of having the movies on their new service Peacock.

Where Are The Harry Potter Movies Going Next
Will the;Harry Potter movies go to Netflix? Thats been a question weve all asked for a long time. The bad news is thats not going to happen. At least, not any time soon.
Netflix doesnt have the streaming rights to the movies. With HBO Max, Peacock, and so many other streaming sites, its possible that well never see the magical movies on the biggest streaming service of all.
The good news is the;Harry Potter movies will stream on another service in the future. Theyre all heading to Peacock in the fall. Were looking at October for the release, where youll be able to stream all eight until around April 2021.
After that, who knows where theyll go. Going back to HBO Max is likely.
However,;Harry Potter is a huge franchise. Its likely that Warner Bros. may want to make the most of the licensing contracts, allowing the movies to go on various streaming services for a month to six months at a time.
Well certainly keep an eye out for where the;Harry Potter movies will go and whether theyll ever come to Netflix.
For now, the;Harry Potter movies are on HBO Max for one last day.
Where To Watch The Harry Potter Movies Online In September 2021
As of September 1, 2021, the above movies will leave Peacock and will come back to HBO Max. That streaming service is owned by Warner Media, which also owns Harry Potter movie makers Warner Bros., so eventually the films are expected to become a permanent part of the HBO Max collection.
Why have these films moved around so much recently? Because of deals that existed before Warner decided to launch its own streaming service and was instead making money from its catalog by licencing its content out to others.
In this case, HBO Max had a deal with NBCUniversal in 2016 that gave the studio TV and digital rights for the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts movies from 2018 to 2025 a deal that Variety estimated was worth around $250 million. This was an expansion of a previous deal that allowed NBCUniversal to bring the Wizarding World to Universal Studio theme parks.
This deal meant that NBCUniversal was able to show the films on its channels , as well as its digital platforms.
This was, however, before either NBCUniversal or Warner announced their plans to launch streamers of their own, which complicated the deal somewhat. This is why the films keep jumping from streamer to streamer Warner keeps negotiating with NBC to create what Variety called “carve out on streaming rights.” Basically, Peacock has the streaming rights for Harry Potter, but keep making deals that allow HBO Max to stream the movies for set times.

Other Major Franchises That Have Recently Switched Streaming Services
Harry Potter isnt even the only series to encounter this fate in recent months, and Peacock strangely enough has seen itself at the mercy of such agreements itself. While the Jurassic Park trilogy was available for Peacocks opening day push, those first three films in the entire Jurassic saga were shuttled back to their previous home at Netflix as of August 1. As another taunt to the HBO Max librarys supremacy, it currently has to share Batman Begins and The Dark Knight with Hulu, as well as Peacock, which will have those first two movies in the future as well.
In a world where Netflix saw Warner Bros making it pay for an extra year of Friends, and Peacock making a deal to get The Office back in time for its launch, the streaming market seems more volatile than ever. Harry Potters big franchise-wide shuffle is only the latest reminder that, at least for the time being, the agreements of the past will firmly dictate the chaos of the future. If you want to take one last chance to say goodbye to all eight Harry Potter films, youd better do so on HBO Max before August 25. After that point, youll have to wait until October for them to resurface on Peacock for a full month before disappearing again.
What Will Be The Plot Of The Harry Potter Hbo Max Show
There is no word yet on what the plot of the Harry Potter series will be, but initial reports hinted that Warner Bros. is discussing âbroad ideasâ for the series. That means the show could very well be a live-action, series-long re-telling of the original seven Harry Potter books, or it could tell an entirely different story set within the Wizarding World.
Fortunately, the Wizarding World is rich with other ideas, characters, and stories outside of the Potter books, all of which would be well-suited to the live-action TV format. The series could tell the story of the original Hogwarts founders, or it could follow the earlier adventures of characters from the Harry Potter books â like Sirius Black, James Potter, and the rest of the Marauders. It could even be an adaptation of the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage play.
The possibilities are endless right now. A show about the Hogwarts founders does sound particularlyintriguing though.

Harry Potter Show Reportedly In Early Stages At Hbo Max
A major part of the HBO Max business model seems to be spinning off Warner Bros biggest properties into must-see small-screen streaming series. Right now, James Gunn is hard at work on The Suicide Squad sister-show Peacemaker, while Matt Reeves upcoming The Batman movie will coincide with a Gotham PD series. And now, early reports indicate that plans are afoot to take one of the biggest properties under the Warner Bros umbrella and explore it through an HBO Max series: the Wizarding World.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, discussions are being had about a live-action show set in the world of Harry Potter, with meetings being taken to sound out writers for ideas of how the Wizarding World might translate onto the small screen. By all accounts, this is all in very early stages and HBO Max and Warner Bros have responded to THRs report by stating: There are no Harry Potter series in development at the studio or on the streaming platform.
The reports, however, do come hot on the heels of the news that Warner Bros. has appointed Tom Ascheim to oversee the Harry Potter and Wizarding World franchise, with Variety stating that he has been tasked with expanding the Wizarding World property for the studios various outlets and platform partners. If those plans arent up for discussion yet, that mention of various outlets certainly hints at HBO Max as a home for something related to the Potter franchise.
Who Is In The Cast Of The Harry Potter Series
The series is said to be still in development at HBO Max. No writers are attached to the series yet, so no actors are either. Whether or not any of the cast members of the Harry Potter films will reprise their roles in the series will depend entirely on the showâs story and their own willingness to return to the universe. But let’s be honest, what else do Rupert Grint or Tom Felton have going on these days?
Now For Some Good News
Although the removal of the films from HBO Max is unfortunate, fans have something to look forward to in the form of a quiz series and a retrospective surrounding the Sorcerers Stone.
This is in celebration of its 20th anniversary and WarnerMedia Kids & Family recently unveiled what to expect, with Tom Ascheim President, Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics explaining in a press release:
To celebrate the dedicated fans old and new who have passionately kept the Wizarding World magic alive in so many forms for decades, these exciting specials will celebrate their Harry Potter fandom in a must-see multiplatform TV event. All Potter fans can gear up for this ultimate one-of-a-kind celebration by embracing their inner Hermione Granger and studying their Wizarding World knowledge.
He added: For fans who have always wanted to discover what it might be like to take the O.W.L. exams, this is as close as they are going to get!
Wands at the ready, this sounds pretty special.

Opinionnbc’s Peacock Launches With A Clear Winner But It’s Not The One You Think
What happens in between? Potter will be continue to be available on Syfy and USA, via cable subscriptions. But it wont be found on any streaming services, part of an ever-growing mass of films currently in limbo, some relatively obscure, some famous. TV critic Mike Ryan recently wrote of his own failed hunt for Cocoon, once a box-office smash, but now lost somewhere in the red tape of rights ownership with no complete explanation for why it cannot be found.
At least the Harry Potter moves are being publicly covered, via the monthly missives from Warner and NBCUniversal detailing whats going and coming from their services. We can thank Netflix for these updates, a legacy of its Silicon Valley approach to content management. Netflix didnt seem to think such information was necessary; once users highlighted a few favorites, the algorithm would do all the work or so the thinking went. That gave rise to an entirecottageindustry of Netflix-centric sites that exist solely to tell you what to watch and where to find it.
This led to Netflix eventually releasing a monthly list of whats coming and whats going, which other companies now dutifully replicate. But the technocrat anti-customer-service mindset remains, leaving it up to the ever-more frustrated consumer to work out whats available when and who owns what and where it all is at any given time, if it is even available at all.

As streaming services proliferate, it is becoming more of a challenge to track down your favorite TV shows and blockbuster movies when streaming services can change up their offerings every month. That is complicating life for those who know what they want to watch, but just do not know where to locate it.
Some hits are practically itinerants. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, for instance, bounced around four different services between March 2020 and March 2021 Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, and Peacock. Some of these services hosted the movies twice in that time according to Reelgood, a service that tracks videos across streaming services.
Why do some film and show titles keep switching platforms?
Want to watch a Harry Potter movie? Films in the series started on HBO Max in May 2020 before heading to Peacock in August. They then jumped back to HBO Max in June 2021 but only for a single month. At the moment, the first three films are available for free on Peacock, but you will need a premium subscription for the last five.
Not long after its March launch, Paramount+ reclaimed some of its movies, like Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and the Paul Rudd comedy I Love You Man;from other services.
