The Lord Of The Rings By J R R Tolkien

Harry Potter Books

A notoriously slow writer, it took J. R. R Tolkien to finish his book, The Hobbit. However, the success of The Hobbit prompted the publisher to request a sequel from Tolkien, which he began writing at age 45. This story, The Lord of the Rings, wasnt published until Tolkien was 63 years old. The reason for the slow progress was the fact that he still had a full-time academic position. He also abandoned the book for most of 1943 before continuing progress the next year. Even after completing the novel Tolkien continued with revisions before eventually ending up with more than 9250 pages of manuscripts. Issues with publishers further delayed the eventual publishing of the book, which at that point had been split into three parts, until years later.

Harry Potter & The Order Of The Phoenix: 10 Mistakes Jk Rowling Made In The Book

Jk Rowling’s Harry Potter And The Order of the Phoenix is a masterpiece and the longest book in the series. But even she can make odd mistakes!

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the fifth book in the series, releasing in 2003, three years after the previous installment. With Lord Voldemort now back, The Boy Who Lived faces his most difficult year yet. The Dark Lord operates secretly, meaning nobody believes Harry Potter when he tells the story of the villain’s return, Dolores Umbridge makes his life at school a living hell and, to top it off, godfather Sirius Black tragically dies at the end of the year.

Jk Rowling’s book is a masterpiece and, at 257,045 words, is the longest in the series. However, even the author is prone to the odd mistake. So we’ll now take a look at 10 that were made in the fifth novel of the franchise.

Uses In Education And Business

Writers on education and business subjects have used the book as an object lesson. Writing about clinical teaching in medical schools, Jennifer Conn contrasted Snape’s technical expertise with his intimidating behaviour towards students. Quidditch coach Madam Hooch on the other hand, illustrated useful techniques in the teaching of physical skills, including breaking down complex actions into sequences of simple ones and helping students to avoid common errors. Joyce Fields wrote that the books illustrate four of the five main topics in a typical first-year sociology class: “sociological concepts including culture, society, and socialisation; stratification and social inequality; social institutions; and social theory“.

Stephen Brown noted that the early Harry Potter books, especially Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, were a runaway success despite inadequate and poorly organised marketing. Brown advised marketing executives to be less preoccupied with rigorous statistical analyses and the “analysis, planning, implementation, and control” model of management. Instead he recommended that they should treat the stories as “a marketing masterclass”, full of enticing products and brand names. For example, a real-world analogue of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans was introduced under licence in 2000 by toymaker Hasbro.

A Tale Of Two Vanishing Cabinets

In Half-Blood Prince, Draco used a pair of Vanishing Cabinets to let Death Eaters infiltrate Hogwarts. But did you notice theyd popped up many times already?

First, Harry used one as a hiding place in Borgin and Burkes

Harry looked quickly around and spotted a large black cabinet to his left; he shot inside it and pulled the doors to, leaving a small crack to peer through. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

meanwhile, the other one was safely tucked away at Hogwarts

But as Filch lowered his quill, there was a great BANG! on the ceiling of the office, which made the oil lamp rattle.PEEVES! Filch roared, flinging down his quill in a transport of rage. Ill have you this time, Ill have you! Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Oops! Looks like it wasnt that safe.

That vanishing cabinet was extremely valuable! he was saying gleefully to Mrs Norris. Well have Peeves out this time, my sweet.Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

It was still broken when Fred and George stuffed Montague inside

He never managed to get all the words out, said Fred, due to the fact that we forced him head-first into that Vanishing Cabinet on the first floor.Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

and thanks to that, Montague discovered the link between them and informed fellow Slytherin Draco.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Sirius Gets His Dates Wrong

The longest Harry Potter book is also the shortest movie ...

After an emotional reunion with Sirius at 12 Grimmauld Place, Harry and his godfather get talking. They touch on Severus Snape and it’s here Sirius reveals the Potions Master ‘ran in the same circles’ as Bellatrix Lestrange at school, suggesting he was always destined to turn out bad.

However, given Bellatrix was born in 1951, the math doesn’t add up. Snape started Hogwarts two decades later, meaning Helena Bonham Carter’s character would have been 20 by this point. Far too old for school, but definitely of age to start hanging out with Voldemort and joining him in his mission to purge the wizarding world of all non-magical folk.

Statistics On Harry Potter Chapter Length

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – Book Review

I’m looking for some statistics on typical Harry Potter chapter word count.

A nicely graphed distribution would be nice, but I’ll accept an answer that has something equivalent to the average, standard deviation, and quartiles.

  • I’m mainly concerned with the series as whole, not each book separately. Jan 21 ’19 at 12:22
  • 1You may want to specify an edition as the word counts may vary, unless that’s insignificant enough that you don’t care about it.

To calculate this answer I used the text from the official Pottermore ePubs . I ran the htmls through a utility I found to convert them to txt, and then used the unix wc -w command to generate a list of chapter word counts.

I plugged this into excel and did a few calculations.

Note: All the below data uses the UK text. The American text tends to be a bit shorter.

  • The longest chapter is Book 5, Chapter 13 – “Detention with Dolores” at 9,001 words.
  • Not counting the epilogue, the shortest chapter is Book 3, Chapter 20 – “The Dementors Kiss” at 2,018 words.
  • The average chapter length is 5,547 words.
  • The standard deviation is 1,525 words.
  • 50% of the chapters are between 4,464 and 6,613 words.

Here is how the distribution looks with a bin width of 500 words.

However it’s worth noting that some factors have a significant effect on chapter length, such as the length of the book and the position in the book.

An Excel spreadsheet of my own devising. The number bold and in blue is the weighted average it calculated.
