Who Was Grindelwald In The Harry Potter Books

Their Goals Were The Same

Crimes of Grindelwald Books || Harry Potter Fantastic Beasts Merchandise

Despite the fact that Grindelwald was someone who wanted to take control of the world and keep Muggles under his thumb, it was very similar to what Dumbledore originally wanted as well. Both men wanted to bring down the Ministry of Magic, who ruled with an iron fist and brought destruction to anyone who disagreed with their point of view.

With that said, even after Dumbledore beat Grindelwald, he still seemed to have a complete distrust and lack of faith in the Ministry of Magic and wanted more than anything to protect people, not harm them. Look no further than TheOrder of the Phoenix to see that Dumbledore was never as;aggressive as Grindelwald, but was willing to do whatever it took to achieve his goals.

Who Is Aurelius Dumbledore

In the last minutes of the movie, Grindelwalds followers decamp to Nurmengard, the prison that Grindelwald builds for dissenters and eventually becomes his own jailhouse. There, Grindelwald reveals that Credence is in fact Aurelius Dumbledore, Albus Dumbledores brother.

We dont yet know why a secret Dumbledore brother has never been mentioned before in the Harry Potter universe or how the Dumbledore baby ended up on the boat to America.Rita Skeeter would be disappointed to learn she hadnt dug up all the dirt on the Dumbledores.

Grindelwald offers one impressive piece of evidence: He tells Credence that a phoenix is said to appear to Dumbledores in times of need, and a phoenix does, indeed, appear to Credence. Could this possibly by a young Fawkes?

If Credence is, indeed, a Dumbledore, that means that Albus Dumbledore had two Obscurial siblings. Grindelwald feels that Credences power and perhaps Dumbledores guilt over Arianas fate will be his most powerful weapon against the great wizard.

Grindelwald Played A Major Part In The Harry Potter Series

In the “Harry Potter” series, which takes place decades after “Fantastic Beasts,” Grindelwald plays a big;role and helped shape the course of world events in the 20th century. He was Albus Dumbledore’s closest friend before turning into a Hitler-like figure who threw the magical world into turmoil in an attempt to dominate non-magical folk.

Grindelwald’s first mention in the “Harry Potter” series is inconspicuous. He’s simply a name dropped on Albus Dumbledore’s chocolate frog card in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”: “Dumbledore is particularly famous for his defeat of the Dark wizard Grindelwald in 1945.”

It’s not until several books later in;”Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” that he plays a bigger role. As Voldemort searches for The Elder Wand, which he believes will make him invincible, he traces its path to Grindelwald. Voldemort finds Grindelwald in Nurmengard, a prison Grindelwald;built during his rise to power and was;locked in after his fall. But he finds out that Grindelwald doesn’t have the wand anymore, and kills him.

Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger learn about Grindelwald by accident.

Later, Harry and the crew find out Grindelwald’s sign is that of the Deathly Hallows a trio of objects consisting of the Elder Wand, the Resurrection Stone, and the Cloak of Invisibility. If a;wizard or witch were to;possess;all three Hallows, they were said to be the Master of Death.;

Nagini In Her Human Form

Rowling stirred up controversy when the Crimes of Grindelwald trailer teased a character who turned from human to snake. This woman turns out to be a Maledictus named Nagini, played by Claudia Kim. Credence meets her while the two are working at a circus. Unlike an Animagus, who can freely morph from human to animal and back, a Maledictus carries a blood curse that will eventually turn the person into the animal permanently.

Presumably, this Nagini is the very same one who will eventually become companion to Voldemort. Fans might assume that Nagini was intrigued by the dark arts early in life since she inevitably ends up an ally of the most evil wizard in history.

But in Crimes of Grindelwald, when Grindelwald offers several wizards the choice to join his forces, Nagini resists, even as her friend Credence aligns himself with Grindelwald. Its still unclear whether Nagini will go to the dark side or whether Voldemort will somehow enslave her after shes permanently turned into a snake.

Grindelwald Was Less Skillful

Talk:Gellert Grindelwald

The Aurors showed up at Hogwarts and tried to convince Dumbledore to join them in their hunt for Grindelwald. They told him how dangerous Grindelwald was and how he was building an army that they might be unable to stop, however, Dumbledore was not willing to join the battle at the time. When he let them know his decision, the Aurors told Dumbledore that he was the only wizard who could beat Grindelwald.

When the two finally battled, it was Dumbledore that won in what some consider to be the greatest;duel in wizarding history. When telling the story in later years, Dumbledore explained that the two were equal in power, and while Grindelwald might be stronger, Dumbledore was more skillful, which led to his eventual victory.

Dumbledores Conflict With The Ministry Of Magic

Meet young Dumbledore. At this time, Dumbledore is the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor at Hogwarts. We see him teach a class on Boggarts that closely parallels the lesson Professor Remus Lupin gave Harry and his classmates decades later.

Fans find out that Dumbledores uneasy relationship with the wizarding government began early in the professors Hogwarts career. Officials from the Ministry of Magic interrupt the class to confront Dumbledore: they allege that hes working against them by sending Newt Scamander to America and then Paris to protect Credence, an Obscurial, from Grindelwald.

When Dumbledore evades their questions, they forbid him from continuing to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts. A boy named McLaggen comes to Dumbledores defense, saying hes the best teacher theyve had.

Grindelwalds Powers Vs Dumbledores Who Was More Powerful Wizard

Albus Dumbledore once said that Grindelwald could make himself invisible without the use of the Cloak of Invisibility. To achieve this state, Grindelwald used an extremely powerful Disillusionment Charm.;

This is a charm that disguises a target as its surroundings, not by making it invisible, but by making it take on the exact color and texture of its environment.

His first and only mission was dominance over all the Muggles. He even set up his base at Nurmengard and with his followers committed numerous murders and other crimes. In favor of his dueling abilities, he defeated many great wizards of the time.

Grindelwald was also an extremely accomplished Occlumens, as even Voldemort was unable to penetrate his mind to gain information for the search of the Elder Wand.;

He had an immense understanding of healing charms, as well as handling magical creatures, particularly dark ones. Transfiguration, Apparition, Divination, wandless and nonverbal magic were also the enviable skills of this dark wizard.

Grindelwald was the one who stole the Elder Wand because according to legend, whoever united the wand with the other two Deathly Hallows would become the Master of Death.

We certainly must not forget his skills as the Occlumency and Legilimency. He was able to peer deep inside peoples minds and exactly know what they were thinking at the moment, and vice versa keeping anyone from accessing his own mind.

So, there is no doubt, Dumbledore was the most powerful wizard of all time.

Fighting Albus Even Though They Had A Blood Pact

The entire conflict in The Crimes of Grindelwald was that Albus couldnt challenge Grindelwald due to a blood oath between them that forbade it. However, they actually did have a duel much earlier and when the oath was in effect.

This was right after Grindelwald had attacked Aberforth, following which Albus had intervened and all three wizards had started fighting each other. Since the oath was already in place at the time, neither Grindelwald nor Albus shouldve been able to harm one another, making it nonsensical why they couldnt do the same years later.

Both Men Fell To Voldemort

5 Things Harry Potter Books Did Better than the Movies – Harry Potter Explained

In what has to be a bitter irony, the two strongest wizards in the world fell to the same man. Gellert Grindelwald was considered the most powerful Dark Wizard in history, that is, until Voldemort showed up and became more powerful than Grindelwald had ever dreamed of being. The two even met in the original Harry Potter series when Voldemort wanted to know where the Elder Wand was and then took the life of Grindelwald when he refused to tell him.

Everyone knows that the end of Dumbledore came at his own behest, but it was also in a diabolical plan set up by Lord Voldemort. The fact that Voldemort succeeded in ending the life of the strongest wizard in history was only offset by the fact that Dumbledore twisted the plans to backfire on Voldemort when he finally faced Harry Potter.

Fantastic Beasts: 10 Things About Gellert Grindelwald That Make No Sense

The facts known about Gellert Grindelwald clash with what has been seen in the Fantastic Beasts movies, and he’s done many things that are illogical.

The Fantastic Beasts series has brought the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwalds story in full after many teases during the Harry Potter movies. Considered more evil than Voldemort by some in the magical community, Grindelwalds reputation has been backed up by his actions. Still, that hasnt stopped him from either contradicting established logic or opening up many plot holes.

There were a number of facts about Grindelwald already known, but the Fantastic Beasts movies have clashed with them. There are also some gaps in logic where the movie universe is concerned, along with his association with Albus Dumbledore and the Elder Wand.

Both Manipulated Younger Wizards

Although;Grindelwald was;sinister and Dumbledore was noble, they shared one very disturbing trait: both men manipulated younger;wizards to do their bidding, often putting the youngsters’ lives in danger to achieve their goals. With Grindelwald, it was clear with Credence, who he was setting up to take the fall in the battle with Dumbledore.

With Dumbledore, his goals were set into motion when he allowed Harry Potter to face;hardship;his entire life, throwing him into the path of danger and peril with only his own idea of the Greater Good in mind. Dumbledore was;hard on;Potter to the extent that he used him to achieve his goals. Now, fans can see that he did the same to Newt Scamander. As a result, both men played dangerous games and used younger;wizards;as their pawns.

Dumbledore And Grindelwalds Impending Duel

Notably, at the end of Crimes of Grindelwald, Newt and Dumbledore discuss how Dumbledore and Grindelwald swore not to fight one another.

Instead of making an Unbreakable Vow, the two made a Blood Oatha new concept for Harry Potter fans. Considering that Dumbledore and Grindelwald do eventually fight, a Blood Oath is presumably breakable, unlike an Unbreakable Vow.

Thinking He Could Torture Aberforth In Front Of Albus & Expect Nothing To Happen

Gellert Grindelwald

Although its generally argued that Fantastic Beasts Goldsteins or Scamanders are dysfunctional siblings, theyre nothing compared to the Dumbledores. Albus and Aberforth had such a violent falling out over Albus’ association with Grindelwald that the latter intervened and started torturing Aberforth.

This was the event that convinced Albus that Grindelwald was evil, which really shouldnt be too surprising since Gellert was attacking Albus own brother. Grindelwald was known to be a shrewd tactician, yet outright torturing a teenager was far too silly of a move, especially since he was very well aware of Albus character and shouldve known it wouldnt have worked on him.

Not Using Polyjuice Potion As A More Effective Way For His Disguise

Grindelwald posed as Percival Graves during the first Fantastic Beasts movie using transfiguration rather than Polyjuice potion. Being a master strategist, Grindelwalds decision to do so wasnt a smart one since the ending showed Newt easily removing the transfiguration to reveal the real Grindelwald.

Polyjuice potion was so effective that Barty Crouch Jr. was able to fool Dumbledore for a whole year by posing as Mad-Eye Moody. Since Grindelwald had dispatched Graves, he could easily have used Graves to create the Polyjuice potion and ensure no one would be able to use magic to expose his charade.

Early Life And Education

Gellert Grindelwald was born in around 1884 in an unknown place. He was the great-nephew of Bathilda Bagshot. He attended Durmstrang Institute and became very drawn to the Dark Arts championed by the school. He excelled in many fields and began experimenting with the Dark arts.

The experiments involved hurting other people, and eventually even Durmstrang would not enable the dark nature of Gellert at their school. They expelled Gellert from the school at the age of 16, by which point he had developed a fascination for wizarding artefacts.

But Jkr Now Implies A Mutual Relation

However, in the Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald DVD extras, JKR is now implying that Grindelwald and Dumbledore were in a more mutual relationship.

“Their relationship was incredibly intense, it was passionate and it was a love relationship,” the author said. “But as happens in any relationship, gay or straight or whatever label we want to put on it, one never knows really what the other person is feeling. You can’t know. You can believe you know.”

“So I’m less interested in the sexual side though I believe there is a sexual dimension to this relationship than I am in the sense of the emotions they felt for each other, which ultimately is the most fascinating thing about all human relationships.”

Wanting To Kill Albus Despite Being In Love With Him

Sorting Gellert Grindelwald in to a Hogwarts House – Harry Potter Theory

Grindelwald didnt directly harm Dumbledore due to their blood oath, but he was willing to manipulate the likes of Credence to make others kill him. This doesnt add up, though, as JK Rowling revealed that Grindelwald was indeed passionately in love with Albus, making an attempt on his life contradict that.

After all, Dumbledore was shown unwilling to face his former lover for this very reason, and if their feelings were mutual from the beginning, it didnt make sense why Grindelwald would try to kill the only man hed ever loved.

Running time

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is a 2018 fantasy film directed by David Yates and written by J. K. Rowling. A joint American and British production, it is the sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them . It is the second instalment in the Fantastic Beasts film series and the tenth overall in the Wizarding World franchise, which began with the Harry Potter film series. It features an ensemble cast including Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Zoë Kravitz, , Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Kevin Guthrie, Jude Law and Johnny Depp. Set in 1927, it follows Newt Scamander and Albus Dumbledore as they attempt to take down the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald while facing new threats in a more divided wizarding world.

A second Fantastic Beasts film was announced in October 2014, and in July 2016 Rowling confirmed she had completed the script. Depp was cast in November 2016, causing some controversy due to domestic violence allegations recently made against him. Law signed on in April 2017. Principal photography began in July 2017 at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, in England. Filming also took place in London, Switzerland, and Paris, and wrapped in December 2017.

Massing His Forces: Crimes Of Grindelwald

Grindelwald eventually established a prison, Nurmengard in Austria, to serve as a headquarters for himself and his followers, apparently sufficiently impregnable that he was later imprisoned in it, inaccessible to his former supporters and breached only by Voldemort. Not much is yet known about the “For the greater good revolution”, but in the flashbacks of the beginning of the first Fantastic Beasts film we see he killed a large group of Aurors with a single curse while he was in Switzerland and he apparently caused an explosion at an as of yet unspecified location that appeared to kill many Muggles and Wizards alike.

At some point in the future he murders Viktor Krum’s grandfather, and presumably there were many others. As of yet no other information is available about the events that transpired during his reign of terror across continental Europe but as more films are released in the Fantastic Beasts series, so too will be more information of the various crimes and acts of terror he has committed in his lifetime.

The Logic Behind His Plan Of Escape

The opening of The Crimes of Grindelwald revealed that hed corrupted Ministry official Abernathy and it was the latter posing as him when Grindelwald was being transported from a prison in the Thestral-ridden carriage. However, this plan doesnt make sense since Grindelwald didnt need such an elaborate setup.

He could have easily escaped before the carriage took flight and disapparated with Abernathy. Moreover, Grindelwald also let official Spielman live while killing the other Aurors. He had no reason to allow Spielman to survive, much less since Spielman then told everyone that Grindelwald escaped. If he was merciful enough to let one person live, then it also didnt make sense to kill the other wizards.
