Lego Harry Potter Collection Coming To Xbox One Consoles In 4k

LEGO Harry Potter Collection: The Magic Begins – Xbox One X

LEGO Harry Potter Collection was announced today for Microsoft’s Xbox One consoles and the game is already available for digital pre-order.

This latest LEGO video game is a bundling of the two Xbox 360 titles; LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7. All of the content has been remastered and will play in 4K resolution on the Xbox One X console. It’s unclear how much other reworking of the visuals has been done but the teaser trailer for LEGO Harry Potter Collection gives the impression that the remastering has more to do with resolution than actual improving of the Xbox 360 graphics.

Here’s the official game description and teaser for LEGO Harry Potter Collection:

The LEGO Harry Potter Collection brings LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 and LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 remastered! This compilation unites the creative prowess of LEGO and the expansive world of Harry Potter, with an exciting journey full of spell-casting, potion-making, puzzle-solving, lessons, dueling and much more for players of all ages to enjoy.

LEGO Harry Potter Collection is due for release on the Xbox One on October 30th, just over two years since its release on Sony’s PlayStation 4 console.

Xbox 360 Backward Compatible Games List For Xbox One Xbox Series X/s

Backward compatibility opens Xbox consoles to a massive variety of games, and with the latest Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, it now spans three generations of past consoles. Despite hardware differences, it remains an outstanding feature, allowing a select library of older games to be played on new devices. That list now stows hundreds of previous games revived on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, with some even featuring bespoke enhancements bringing older experiences into the new generation.

With an extensive range of titles that support backward compatibility, we’ve compiled a list of every past Xbox 360 and original Xbox game supported so far.

The Witcher 2: Assassin Of Kings

Status: Very playable with moments of slowdown in combat

For its time, CD Projeck RED’s The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings was one of the most technologically advanced PC games money could buy – so the notion that the game could be down-ported to Xbox 360 felt far-fetched, to say the least. But in April 2012, that’s exactly what happened, and through a combination of well-judged cutbacks and entire revisions of key systems, CDPR handed in a highly creditable experience.

Now it’s available for Xbox One via backward compatibility, and it’s well worth checking out – especially as for the time being, it’s free to download for most users. The end result is intriguing: in common with many of the more demanding Xbox 360 games, there are areas where Xbox One provides enhanced performance, v-sync is fully enforced across the entire experience, while elsewhere, frame-rates lag behind the same code running on original hardware – a phenomenon that is mostly limited to combat encounters.

Microsoft chose this title to showcase the backward compatibility feature to Xbox One owners old and new, and we highly recommend that you check it out.

Xbox Series Backwards Compatibility: What Are The Xbox Backwards Compatibility Improvements On Xbox Series X And Xbox Series S

Harry Potter Games Xbox One Backwards Compatibility ...

As well as the above lists of supported Xbox One and original Xbox games, the Xbox Series consoles also offers backwards compatibility to Xbox One games and peripherals in what Microsoft describes as “our most powerful and compatible console ever”.

In a blog post in July 2020, Microsoft said: “It’s our intent for all Xbox One games that do not require Kinect to play on Xbox Series X at the launch of the console.”

Backwards compatible supported games on Xbox Series will benefit from several system-wide features:

  • Backwards compatible games will run natively on Xbox Series X hardware, offering potentially higher framerates and resolutions, plus “significant reductions” in load times using the SSD. In early Digital Foundry tests, it offers “up to double the performance in the most demanding games”.
  • “Select titles” can have framerate doubled, going from 30fps to 60fps, or 60fps to 120fps.
  • HDR will be supported across backwards compatible games thanks to a “reconstruction technique”, even going back to original Xbox and Xbox 360 games.
  • All titles will support Quick Resume, a system-wide feature which allows you to stop progress of multiple games and continue playing them later.

In May 2020, there was also the final tease from director of project management Jason Ronald that there are more games to come: “The team also continues to listen to feedback from the community on additional titles you would like to see added to the compatibility program.”

    Alan Wake’s American Nightmare

Status: Very playable, but presentation marred by awful black crush issues

Remedy’s Xbox Live Arcade pseudo-sequel to the original Alan Wake has some issues but performance seemingly isn’t one of them. Based on our tests, the title manages to match the performance profile of the game running on original hardware, and it does so without any of the screen-tear found in the original game. However, dropping adaptive v-sync does introduce more stutter as a consequence and the game doesn’t feel quite as smooth as it does on Xbox 360, where the tearing wasn’t quite so visible owing to the very dark palette.

What’s curious about this title is that the original Xbox 360 release features support for both adaptive v-sync and a hard double-buffer v-sync, which sees the tearing replaced by sudden, sustained drops down to 20fps when the engine dips beneath the target frame-rate. In this sense, playing on Xbox One is obviously better – those intrusive lurches are gone.

However, the experience is compromised badly by a truly horrible black crush that robs the game of much of its detail, to the point where it’s very, very difficult to actually see what you’re doing in the initial part of the title. It may well be a case of rec.709 gamma not playing nicely with our capture kit here – but as you can see in the shot below, the Xbox 360 version looks fine.

How Does Xbox Backward Compatibility Work

LEGO Harry Potter Collection – Nintendo Switch, Xbox One Trailer

The Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S are able to play Xbox 360 and original Xbox games through emulation software that makes your console think it’s a last generation machine for the purposes of playing classic games.

When a supported game is started on the machine, the current or last-gen console opens the emulator and, in all regards, the game works as if it was running on an Xbox 360 or 2001 Xbox. The opening screen appears first then the game will load.

All other aspects and features that would normally be available on an Xbox 360 or Xbox are available on the Xbox One/Series X/S too, including the hub on the former . In addition, all new features of the more recent Xbox consoles work, including the ability to take screen grabs and record and share video of gameplay.

Xbox Series X/S owners get an additional bonus with the latest consoles able to play many of the backward compatible Xbox 360 and Xbox games with Auto HDR enabled. This adds virtual high dynamic range contrast and colours to make the titles look better.

Can I Carry On With My Previous Xbox 360 Game Saves On Xbox One Or Xbox Series X/s

LEGO Harry Potter Collection (part 2) – XBOX ONE WALKTHROUGH

If you originally set your Xbox 360 to save games to the cloud you will be able to download the save files to the Xbox One version and carry on. The cloud files are permanently associated with your gamertag so the Xbox One should do this automatically.

If you only saved your in-game progress locally, to the hard drive, you will need to restart your Xbox 360 and save them to the cloud instead. If you no longer have your Xbox 360, sadly you won’t be able to access the files.

Considering the first-gen Xbox didn’t save games to the cloud in the same way, you can’t carry on with old save games.

Xbox One X Vr And 4k Games Support

Upon the system’s announcement, Microsoft has said Xbox One X’s extra power will be particularly useful in two areas; delivering 4K gaming and “high fidelity” VR.

In Digital Foundry’s opinion and spec analysis of Xbox One X, the suggestion is that, if the software – by which we mean games – are optimised well enough, “there is some evidence that Scorpio’s true 4K performance could pose a challenge to the likes of Nvidia’s GTX 1070 and AMD’s Fury X-class hardware.

Over in the deepdive on Scorpio tech, Digital Foundry detailed what they were shown of a special Forza Motorsport demo running in native 4K at 60fps – with power to spare. “Clearly this is just one game, but the point is that Scorpio doesn’t just scale Xbox One engines to 4K. For the Forza engine at least, there’s overhead, and plenty of it.”

This was later confirmed with the announcement of Forza Motorsport 7 at E3, which will run at a native 4K at 60FPS.

At E3 2017 we’ve had Digital Foundry deep dives into other games, such as BioWare’s Anthem and Assassin’s Creed Origins on the system. Both aren’t ‘true’ 4K, employing checkerboard rendering and / or dynamic resolution, but still offer some very impressive results.

However, a larger question from the event was the lack of code running on Xbox One X hardware, with several titles shown on PC instead – making it too early to make broad assessments of the jump between the PS4 Pro or even the standard Xbox One.
