Hermione and Ron are much more successful in picking Christmas presents for Harry than they ever are in picking out gifts for one another.
The stand out gifts includes perfume for Hermione and a talking homework planner for Ron. How Hermione and Ron were meant for each other while still being so oblivious to who the other really was is just baffling.
Hermione Granger And Viktor Krum
Hermione Granger and Viktor Krum might not end up together, but theres definitely an argument to be made that they would have been a better pair than Ron and Hermione. She has a great time on their date until Ron throws a fit over it, and Krum seems to be very interested and kind to her. While in later books they set it up to make Krum look like a bit more of a jerk, at least at the Yule Ball he was a good match for Hermione. They got along well, and he didnt lash out at her in the same ways that Ron did.
Fleur Delacour And Roger Davies
Fleur and Roger Davies are a couple that seem to have a good time during the Yule Ball even if they dont have long term compatibility. They are both attractive and popular people, and they spend part of the dance making out outside in the courtyard, so there was some chemistry there. While it might not be a love connection seeing as how Fleur starts dating Bill Weasley not long after, they were compatible enough to enjoy the date together and have fun kissing.

Ron Didn’t Ask Hermione To The Yule Ball
Ron and Harry struggle greatly to find dates for the Yule Ball in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The Yule Ball is a school-wide event.
Everyone is looking for a date. Hermione, as Ron’s friend, should have been the first person he asked to go with him to the ball. Without romantic relationships at that point, it would have made perfect sense for Ron and Hermione to go together, just as friends, to the celebration. It makes no sense that it took so long for Ron to even remember that Hermione was a girl.
Ron Not Standing Up For Hermione
Ron may have spoken up for Hermione in the books when Snape calls her a know it all, but he couldn’t stand up for her to his own mother. He was so mad at Harry, and about Krum, that Ron didn’t let his mother know that all the articles about Hermione toying with the hearts of two Triwizard competitors was completely false.
That’s why Hermione gets such a sad Easter present from Mrs. Weasley. Ron could be a bit selfish and shortsighted when it came to his second-best friend.

The Yule Ball Is A Way To Investigate The Triwizard Champions And Their Relationships
When the Yule Ball arrives, Harry ultimately brings one of his Gryffindor classmates, Parvati Patil , and Krum, harboring a huge, silent crush on Hermione, works up the courage to ask her as his date. Meanwhile, Cedric brings Harry’s crush, Cho Chang , and Fleur goes with a Hogwarts student named Roger Davies .
After the ball is over, the champions are given a little time to relax before the second task in February. Just before the task, Harry discovers that he’ll need to travel into the deep recesses of Hogwarts’ expansive lake, and not only that, he’ll have to rescue that which he’ll miss most Ron, his best friend, who is held “captive” by the lake’s merpeople. When he finds the hostages underwater, he realizes that Hermione, Cho, and Fleur’s younger sister Gabrielle are asleep alongside Ron, meaning that for Krum and Cedric, Hermione and Cho are what they’d miss most.
Clearly, the organizers of the tournament watched students closely at the Yule Ball and realized that, rather than spend time with his date, Harry stuck with Ron, and that both Krum and Cedric were quite enamored of their dates. Apparently, Fleur didn’t take much of a liking to Roger, and her beloved sister took what could have been his place.
The Yule Ball, as it turns out, was no simple party, but a way for the Triwizard organizers to study the Champions’ interpersonal relationships and figure out a way to structure the tournament’s daunting second task.
Did Hermione Actually Like Krum
Victor Krum was highly attracted to Hermione and saw her as the most desirable girl in the Hogwarts environment to go with. She was smart, beautiful and not a fawning groupie. Victor must have been utterly bored by such women. And Hermione chose to accept his invitation because he was the first male who asked.

Cedric Diggory And Cho Chang
Of all the couples at the Yule Ball, these two are one of the most tragic. They are both extremely talented, smart, beautiful, and popular, and they seem to get along rather well. While Cho also seemed to have a bit of a crush on Harry, she was also quite compatible with Cedric. However, since Cedric died, Cho and he never got the chance to see how compatible they were. This was definitely something extremely sad, and it impacted Cho emotionally as she grieved his loose the following year.
If You Always Stick By Your Best Friend You Would Be Ron
If youre going to a glitzy shindig chances are youll either end up engaging in small talk with scary new people or gluing yourself to your best friend who just so happens to be with you. This is precisely what Ron did at the Yule Ball, sticking firmly by Harrys side throughout the whole night. This was of great annoyance to his date, Padma, of course, and things didnt get much better when he took out his jealousy on Hermione in a display of emotional fireworks at the end of the evening. However, were not saying you would do any of those things.
Sometimes, parties can just be a bit overwhelming, especially if the person you fancy is at the party too and attending it with someone else. Although Ron didnt handle that situation very well, at least he got to be distracted with Harry for a while, especially when they accidentally eavesdropped on quite a personal conversation between Hagrid and Madame Maxime.

And Then Of Course The Ultimate Moment

Hating On Viktor Krum
Ron’s celebrity crush, seeker Viktor Krum, becomes his greatest enemy after Viktor is the one to ask Hermione to the Yule Ball. Ron didn’t even think of asking Hermione to the ball as a friend at that point, much less as a romantic flame. That he should be so angry at Krum, as well as Hermione, because they go together, doesn’t make any sense at all.
He should have used Hermione’s relationship to cultivate his own friendship with the famed Bulgarian seeker.

Usually, Ron displayed his feelings for Hermione via never-ending arguments, catty comments and jealous jibes. This particularly came to the forefront when Hermione went to the Yule Ball with Viktor Krum, of course. But there were moments where we realised Ron liked Hermione in a far more subtle way, such as this moment of consternation when Hermione kissed him on the cheek before his big Quidditch game.
His reaction may have been mingled with pre-match nerves, but for many readers, this was the clearest indication yet that Ron had feelings for Hermione far beyond being best friends.

Parvati and Lavender looked at Harry while McGonagall was talking about who could attend the ball. This would suggest that they were interesting in going with Harry.
Indeed, Parvati does later go to the Yule Ball with Harry, and is rather enthusiastic about it.

Lavender, Parvati, and Harry are all in the same year, so the statement that “you may invite a younger student if you wish” is probably not relevant. It might seem that it must be, since Parvati and Lavender start laughing as soon as McGonagall mentions inviting younger students, but keep in mind that this is the same sentence in which she announced the Yule Ball in the first place.
I didn’t read the joke as relating to the “you may invite a younger student if you wish” specifically when I read the book.
One of the big themes in that particular part is how oblivious Harry is to the social protocols, and awkward around girls, etc. A main tradition of the Triwizard Tournament is the “lead dance” with the champions and their partners, of which Harry is one.

Neville and Ginny might not be compatible in a romantic way, but they are definitely compatible as friends. Ginny goes with Neville since thats the only way she can go since shes not a fourth year yet. While she definitely doesnt have romantic feelings for him, and Neville is still at a somewhat awkward stage, these two are friends. They would have at least had a decent time and been kind to one another.
