Why Harry Potter Movies Changed Snape’s Death

The Harry Potter movie series stayed as true to the books as possible, but fans were disappointed when Snape’s death was changed in the final movie.

The Harry Potter movie series did a good job in adapting J.K. Rowlings book series, but there were obviously some changes that had to be made either for narrative or creative reasons, and not all of these were well received. A seemingly minor change was the setting of Snapes death in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, but its one that didnt appeal to fans at all. The Harry Potter movie series began in 2001 and came to an end in 2011, with the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, being split into two movies.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 stayed as true to the source material as possible, with just a few tweaks to fit with its predecessor but some were made to key moments in the story. A few examples are Fred Weasleys death and the final duel between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort, but perhaps the one that bothered fans the most was Snapes death, as the setting for it was changed, taking out some truly special moments and details from the book.

But as it happens with every cinematic adaptation of a book, all changes were made for a reason, and the same happened with Snapes death in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.

In the week before its release, a number of texts purporting to be genuine leaks appeared in various forms. On 16 July, a set of photographs representing all 759 pages of the US edition was leaked and was fully transcribed prior to the official release date. The photographs later appeared on websites and peer-to-peer networks, leading Scholastic to seek a subpoena in order to identify one source. This represented the most serious security breach in the Harry Potter series’ history. Rowling and her lawyer confirmed that there were genuine online leaks. Reviews published in both The Baltimore Sun and The New York Times on 18 July 2007, corroborated many of the plot elements from this leak, and about one day prior to release, The New York Times confirmed that the main circulating leak was real.

The Deathly Hallows Come Together At Last

In Harry Potter, did Sirius Black actually die?

There was an interesting Easter egg contained in Harry’s first shot of the last film. As he’s mourning by Dobby’s beachfront grave, he looked in a triangular fragment of a mirror the elf had possessed thanks to the circular nature of his glasses, it created the symbol of the Deathly Hallows in the reflection. It was a wink to how all three elements would eventually be his to do with what he wished.

The Deathly Hallows as Part 1 explained in animated format consisted of the Elder Wand, the Cloak of Invisibility, and the Resurrection Stone. When combined, the three gave a wizard untold power, the ability to disappear from Death’s purview, and a means to bring back lost souls. Voldemort got his hands on one the Elder Wand while Harry had been casually given the cloak in his earliest days at Hogwarts, not knowing its strength. He eventually recovers the Stone, too, after kissing his Snitch goodbye with the intention of sacrificing himself.

Speaking of which …

There Are Some Interesting Fan Theories As To Why Harry Drops The Resurrection Stone

Many of them are rooted in the fact that Harry didn’t believe, personally, that anyone should ever use the Resurrection Stone, which, as the name entails, is able to bring people back to life. If you aren’t familiar with the series, then here’s skinny on the stone: It was the second “Hallow” created. Hallows are magical items / relics that are capable of some truly wondrous feats.

The Resurrection Stone was the second Hallow ever created, and it’s rumored that Death itself had made it. When combined with the two other Hallows the Cloak of Invisibility and the Elder Wand the possessor would become the “Master of Death.”

Harry supposedly drops the stone for several reasons, one being because it didn’t truly bring people back, just “shades” of them as Redditor Talgori puts it.

Another reason for Harry ultimately dropping the stone is that if he were to get rid of it, then that would mean no one else could become a Master of Death. This means that Voldemort would never be able to simultaneously possess all three of the Hallows.

Interestingly enough though, the rumored way to become a true “Master of Death” in the Harry Potter series doesn’t exactly pertain to gaining ownership of the Hallows.

Why Is Snape The Half Blood Prince

Snape was a half blood, born to a Muggle father named Tobias Snape and a witch mother named Eileen Prince. At some point during his school years, he decided to reject his fathers name entirely, giving himself the moniker The Half Blood Prince with his mothers maiden name instead.

Flashback To October 1981

Towards the end of the Second Wizarding War in 1980, seer Sybill Trewlaney and Albus Dumbledore met at the Hogs Head for an interview. Trewlaney applied for the position of the Divination professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but Dumbledore was disappointed by the interview and was about to reject her application. However, as he was about to leave, Trewlaney entered a trance and provided him with a real prophecy:

The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives

She predicted that a boy that had the power to defeat Voldemort was born towards the end of July 1980 to parents who have defied Voldemort in three occasions. This boy would have a power Voldemort could not understand or ever have for himself. And if more than one person fulfilled these requirements, Voldemorts decision on who it was would ultimately determine who this Chosen One is. Voldemort chose Harry because both of them were half-blood while Neville was a pureblood.

Price Wars And Other Controversies

Asda, along with several other UK supermarkets, having already taken pre-orders for the book at a heavily discounted price, sparked a price war two days before the book’s launch by announcing they would sell it for just £5 a copy. Other retail chains then also offered the book at discounted prices. At these prices the book became a loss leader. This caused uproar from traditional UK booksellers who argued they had no hope of competing in those conditions. Independent shops protested loudest, but even Waterstone’s, the UK’s largest dedicated chain bookstore, could not compete with the supermarket price. Some small bookstores hit back by buying their stock from the supermarkets rather than their wholesalers. Asda attempted to counter this by imposing a limit of two copies per customer to prevent bulk purchases. Philip Wicks, a spokesman for the UK Booksellers Association, said, “It is a war we can’t even participate in. We think it’s a crying shame that the supermarkets have decided to treat it as a loss-leader, like a can of baked beans.” Michael Norris, an analyst at Simba Information, said: “You are not only lowering the price of the book. At this point, you are lowering the value of reading.”
