Cedric Diggory Could Be A Nod To Narnia Author Cs Lewis
Cedric is a common incorrectly spelled version of “Cerdic,” a sixth-century Saxon king.
His last name may come from “Sir Degare,” an obscure Middle English poem. It might also be a reference to;Digory Kirke, a character from C.S. Lewis’s “The Chronicles of Narnia,” of which Rowling is a fan.
Amos, Cedric’s father, is named after a Biblical prophet. In Hebrew, the name is related to the word “burden,” which Amos must carry after his son’s death.

Magical Abilities And Skills
Hermione is portrayed during the whole series as an exceptionally talented young witch. J.K. Rowling has stated that Hermione is a “borderline genius.” She received ten O.W.L.s, which were nine Outstandings and one Exceeds Expectations. She is the best student in Harry’s year and is repeatedly the first student to master any spell or charm introduced in her classes and even from more advanced years, as evidenced when she can conjure a Protean Charm on the D.A.’s fake Galleon coins, which is a N.E.W.T. level charm. She is also the first one of her age to be able to cast non-verbal spells. Hermione is a competent duellist Rowling has stated that while during the first three books Hermione could have beaten Harry in any magical duel, but by the fourth book Harry had become so good at Defence Against the Dark Arts that he would have defeated Hermione. Hermione did not tend to do as well in subjects that were not learned through books or formal training, as broom flying did not come as naturally to her in her first year as it did to Harry, and she showed no affinity for Divination, which she dropped from her third-year studies. She was also not good at Wizard’s Chess, as it was the only thing at which she ever lost to Ron.

Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone
Hermione first appears in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone when she meets Harry and Ron on the Hogwarts Express, where she mocks Ron for his inability to perform a spell to turn his rat yellow. She proves just how much she knows by declaring that she memorized all the textbooks by heart. She constantly annoys her peers with her knowledge, so Harry and Ron initially consider her arrogant, especially after she criticises Ron’s incantation of the Levitation Charm. They heartily dislike her until they rescue her from a troll, for which she is so thankful that she lies to protect them from punishment, thus winning their friendship. Hermione’s knack for logic later enables the trio to solve a puzzle that is essential to retrieving the Philosopher’s Stone, and she defeats the constrictive Devil’s Snare plant by summoning a jet of “bluebell flame”.
Hermione is the brains behind the plan to enter the place where the Stone is hidden. She responds to Harry’s wariness of Professor Severus Snape and is also suspicious of him. She reveals to Harry and Ron that she does a lot of research in the library, which helped her defeat the Devil’s Snare and work out the logic of the potions.
Rowling said on her website that she resisted her editor’s requests to remove the troll scene, stating “Hermione is so very arrogant and annoying in the early part of Philosopher’s Stone that I really felt it needed something huge to bring her together with Harry and Ron.”
Challenges In Choosing A Middle Name
Picking middle names can be quite challenging, but the task also leaves lots of room for imagination and meaning. In fact, sometimes it’s even harder to pin down the ideal middle name than the first name as not only does it need to complement both the first and last names in sound, alliteration, spirit, and rhythm, but it is also often used to pay homage to someone or something and/or is intended to hold special meaning or imbue qualities imagined for the child.
So, the humble middle name often has a lot of notes to hit. And while it’s by no means a rule, middle names are often just a few syllables in length, so that’s a lot of work to be done by just a few letters.
Sometimes, a middle name is selected for its symbolic meaning or to show respect to a loved one or special event, item, emotion, or characteristic, other times it may be picked simply because it just sounds “right.”
Parents may consider using the name of their hometown, their last name, or even one of their favorite things or characteristics. Some options include selecting a favorite fruit , emotion , or season . Really, anything is on the table, as long as it feels right to you.
However, choosing a person to select for that honor can sometimes be tricky, especially if there are several special people in the running, which may include an ancestor, family member, friend, or celebrity.

The Mythological Origins Of Harry Potter Names
Many of the names in the Harry Potteruniverse have their origins in Greco-Roman mythology, including Minerva McGonagall and Remus Lupin. Hermione is also a name from Greco-Roman mythology. Its the feminine version of Hermes, the name of the Greek messenger god.
In addition, Hermione is the name of a relatively minor figure from Greek mythology. The mythological Hermione is the daughter of Helen of Troy and King Menelaus, as well as a granddaughter of Zeus. William Shakespeare was heavily influenced by Greek myths and incorporated Hermione into one of his lesser-known plays,The Winters Tale.
The 300 Most Popular Middle Names For Girls
While the primary focus of naming a child usually goes to the first name, selecting the perfect middle name is very important as well. Just like first names, middle names run the gamut from simple and traditional to short and sweet to quirky and creative to obscure or trend-setting.
While there is great variety, middle names are often used to commemorate a loved one, such as an older relative, someone who has died, or a personal hero.
Sometimes a middle name is decided on simply because it augments the first name. Some parents choose one based on its first letter or sound in order to achieve alliteration or synchronicity with the other two names.
While most kids end up with one middle name, some families choose to provide their child with two or more middle names either because they can’t decide on just one or they like the sound of several names strung together.
Some middle names end up being the name a child goes by rather than their first oneso it’s a good idea to make sure you consider how you’d feel about the name being used for that purpose as well.

Rowling Has Made No Secret Of How Much She Disliked Cornelius Fudge
“Cornelius” is a common name and comes from the New Testament. But with the Minister for;Magic’s middle and last names, “Oswald” and “Fudge,” Rowling reveals what Fudge’s politics were all along.
“Oswald” is likely a reference to;Oswald Mosley, the leading British fascist politician in the lead-up to World War II, who supported Adolf Hitler. Fudge is also a lot like Neville Chamberlain, the British Prime Minister who tried to avoid war with Hitler. Taken together, the name reflects Rowling’s distaste for the British politicians who allowed Hitler to get away with his crimes, like as Fudge denied the return of Voldemort at the end of “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.”
“Fudge,” as a verb, means to “present or deal with in a vague, noncommittal, or inadequate way, especially so as to conceal the truth or mislead,” according to the Oxford Dictionaries, which also sounds a lot like how Fudge ran the ministry.

Nymphadora Tonks’s Unusual Name Doesn’t Hint At Her Shape
You’d think that if Rowling went through such lengths to come up with “Nymphadora,” then she’d make it a reference to Tonks being a;Metamorphmagus, or someone who can naturally magically change their appearance. “Nymphadora” seems to reference nymphs, who were instead divine, beautiful figures in Greek mythology that inhabited streams and forests.
To “tonk” is a slang term for striking something. Tonks is one of the testiest members of The Order of the Phoenix, always fighting Death Eaters.

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix
Hermione becomes a Gryffindor prefect along with Ron and befriends Luna Lovegood, but their friendship gets off to a rocky start after Hermione chastises the publication of Luna’s father: “The Quibbler‘s rubbish, everyone knows that.” She also lambasts housemate Lavender Brown for believing the Daily Prophet‘s allegations of Harry fabricating stories of Voldemort’s return. Ron and Hermione spend much of their time bickering, likely due to their growing romantic feelings toward one another, but they show continued loyalty to Harry. One turning point in the series is when Hermione conceives the idea of Harry secretly teaching defensive magic to a small band of students in defiance of the Ministry of Magic‘s dictum to teach only the subject’s basic principles from a textbook, with no hands-on practice. Hermione gets an unexpectedly huge response, and the group becomes the nascent Dumbledore’s Army. She is involved in the battle in the Department of Mysteries and seriously injured by a spell from Death Eater Antonin Dolohov, but makes a full recovery.
Dolores Jane Umbridge Is One Of The Most Despised Characters Rowling Ever Invented
Rowling modeled her most detestable character after a teacher she hated, as she wrote in Pottermore. Her name is a reflection of her characteristics.
“Umbridge’s names were carefully chosen,” Rowling wrote.
‘Dolores’ means sorrow, something she undoubtedly inflicts on all around her. ‘Umbridge’ is a play on ‘umbrage’ from the British expression ‘to take umbrage’, meaning offence. Dolores is offended by any challenge to her limited world-view; I felt her surname conveyed the pettiness and rigidity of her character. It is harder to explain ‘Jane’; it simply felt rather smug and neat between her other two names.
