About Lexile Measures For Reading

Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells level 1339

Lexile measures provide educators with an interpretive not prescriptive tool for measuring student growth and predicting future success. The idea behind the Lexile® Framework for Reading is simple: if we know how well a student can read and how hard a specific book is to comprehend, we can predict how well that student will likely understand that book.

There are two Lexile measures: the Lexile reading measure and the Lexile text measure.

A student gets a Lexile reading measure from a reading test or program. For example, if a student receives an 880L on their end-of-grade reading test, their Lexile reading measure is 880L. More than 65 popular reading assessments and programs and 25 state assessments report Lexile reading measures.

A book, article or piece of text gets a Lexile text measure when its analyzed by MetaMetrics®. For example, the first Harry Potter book measures 880L, so its Lexile text measure is 880L.

The Lexile Framework measures students and texts on the same developmental scale to seamlessly match readers to targeted texts.

When The Shoe Fits

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts One and Two ...

You know your shoe size. But imagine how frustrating it would be to try to buy shoes if you couldnt find out what size they were.

The same goes for non-Lexile reading scores. A student scored 286 in reading, for example what would that mean? How would that student find materials to match a 286?

Thats what makes the Lexile Framework for Reading different from other reading scales. It comes to life when you match a Lexile reading measure with a Lexile text measure. The Lexile scale is like a thermometer from below 0L for beginner readers to above 2000L. The Lexile measure is shown as a number with an L after it 880L indicates an 880 Lexile measure. When a Lexile text measure matches a Lexile reading measure, this is called a targeted reading experience. The reader will likely have some challenge with the text, but not enough to get frustrated. This is the best way to grow as a reader with text thats not too hard but not too easy.

What Grade Level Should You Write At

Write to the right reading level The average American adult reading level is that of a 9th grader. But popular mass-market novels are written at a 7th grade level because studies show adults prefer reading two grades below their ability. Readability is important to everyone who is producing content.

What is the average reading level for an 8th grader?

At the 8thgrade level, the average reading score in 2017 was higher than the scores in both 1992 and 2015 . NOTE: Includes public and private schools. The reading scale scores range from 0 to 500.

Age 8 + / 2nd And 3rd Grade

Most children are ready for the first three books in the Harry Potter series by the time they reach the 3rd grade. After around eight years old, children will generally have a good enough reading level to try out these books independently.

If your child struggles with their reading ability, reading these books aloud with them can be a great way to share these stories and have some quality bonding time together. And of course, youre bound to love the books just as much as your kids do!

Like all the Harry Potter books, The Sorcerers Stone does explore some challenging themes, but its done in a gentle way that can promote a healthy dialogue.

There are some potentially scary scenes for example, halfway through this book, the children come face to face with an evil troll they must defeat together. And at the end of the book, theres an extended fight scene between Harry and the evil Voldermort.

Its also worth noting that this book touches upon the theme of parental death. If this isnt something your child has been introduced to through other books or movies yet, it might be wise to gently broach the subject with them first

This book explores pretty similar themes to the first book, and the story follows directly on from where the first book left off.

Some of the more mature themes include the introduction of a serial killer. Unlike previous murders in the series so far, this killer has no connection to many of his victims. He kills without purpose and on a large scale.

Difference Between The Childrens And Adults Editions Of Harry Potter Books

There are fictional books aimed mostly at children. The plot centers around a young wizard called Harry Potter, who, along with his two best friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, attempts to defeat the cruel and sinister villain Lord Voldemort, who is also a wizard and wishes to control the whole Wizarding universe and rule over the non-magical people.

Harry Potter and his friends are Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry scholars. Even though it was written for teenagers, the characters and story have a dark feel to them and are equally exciting for adult readers.

As the book became popular with both adults and children, the publishers and the author agreed to print books with two separate covers.

The cover drawings on the childrens editions of the books are very colorful and vibrant, watercolor illustrations, while the adult versions feature more sophisticated depictions using darker and black colors. This step was reached after the publication of the fifth edition.

Older readers feel uneasy reading Harry Potter in public, such as in a café, library, or on trains while commuting.

So it was a marketing choice to release two separate book covers, one for children and one for adults. There is no distinction between the two versions in terms of text or plot.

They are the same. Another distinction between the childrens and adult versions is the font size. The font size in the adult edition is smaller than in the childrens version.

A Bit About Harry Potter

Unless youve been living under a rock, youll know that the Harry Potter series documents the adventures of a young wizard named Harry and his companions.

But if youre not a Harry Potter fan yourself , you might need some filling in on the broader details of the series.

There are seven books in total, all centering around Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione. They are students at a prestigious boarding school named the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

One of the wonderfully captivating things about the Harry Potter series is that the children get a year older with each book. In book one, theyre eager 11-year-olds, and by the time the series reaches its crescendo in book seven, theyre 18.

We get to see these beloved characters grow up as they battle dark forces in a fight of good against evil.

Throughout the series, the children are on a quest to defeat the evil Lord Voldemort. Voldermort aims to destroy both the wizarding world and the ordinary world so he can gain immortality.

The books examine themes of good and evil, love and friendship, and loyalty and corruption, just to name a few.

Age Groups For Harry Potter Books

One of the more adult topics is the emergence of a serial murderer. Unlike other serial killers in the series, this one has no connections to many of his victims.

He kills for no apparent cause and on a large scale. Rowling presents these concepts in a straightforward way, and most younger readers are likely to gloss over their importance without giving them any thought.

The anticipated reading level for volumes 4 and 5 rises significantly. The plot becomes more complex and interwoven, making it unsuitable for youngsters under the age of 10. These novels are often lengthier and require a level of attention that many younger readers lack.

The majority of the reading and comprehension requirements from the previous two volumes are maintained in Book 6.

Most youngsters with good listening skills can traverse the narrative levels and turns on their own without too much trouble.

Due to the difficult themes that require a level of understanding that many 10-year-olds lack, we would suggest the sixth book for 11-year-olds rather than 10-year-olds if they wanted to give it a try.

The mortality trend has returned, but with a far higher frequency. Characters that are important to the narrative are slain, and there are some especially gruesome scenes of violence that dwarf anything seen in the prior books.

The following is a list of Harry Potter novels and their suggested ages.
