What Does Snogging Mean In Harry Potter

Hermione Say About Snogging – Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince

The moment:

Oh, that, said Ginny, giggling. Well Percys got a girlfriend.

Fred dropped a stack of books on Georges head.

What?

Its that Ravenclaw Prefect, Penelope Clearwater, said Ginny. Thats who he was writing to all last summer. Hes been meeting her all over the school in secret. I walked in on them kissing in an empty classroom one day.Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

The verdict: We never actually got to see Percy and Penelope having any romantic moments together, but we absolutely had to include the hilarious moment Ginny revealed their shenanigans. Percy Weasley sneaking around meeting with a girl what a dark horse!

Hermione Granger & Ron Weasley: Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows

The moment:

Hang on a moment! said Ron sharply. Weve forgotten someone!

Who? asked Hermione. The house-elves, theyll all be down in the kitchen, wont they?

You mean we ought to get them fighting? asked Harry.

No, said Ron seriously, I mean we should tell them to get out. We dont want any more Dobbys, do we? We cant order them to die for us

There was a clatter as the Basilisk fangs cascaded out of Hermiones arms. Running at Ron, she flung them around his neck and kissed him full on the mouth. Ron threw away the fangs and broomstick he was holding and responded with such enthusiasm that he lifted Hermione off her feet’.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

The verdict: We absolutely love that it was house-elf rights that finally got these two to take the leap. What with the Basilisk fangs in Hermiones arms and the impending Battle of Hogwarts, were not entirely sure it was the most romantic of settings. But it didnt seem to matter to them, although Harry did mention it:

Is this the moment? Harry asked weakly, and when nothing happened except that Ron and Hermione gripped each other still more firmly and swayed on the spot, he raised his voice. OI! Theres a war going on here!

Spoil sport.

Harry And Cho Kissing Scene

We were discussing ‘wanker’ which is used joyfully by american writers who don’t quite get the fact that this is a graphic word which is actively used in everyday speech – it sounds ‘quaint’ or comical to american ears and they don’t realise how inappropriate it is to people in the UK. Wasn’t there a lot of snogging in the Harry Potter books?

Why Does Harry Potter Use The Termsnog

British people say snog instead of kissing. So since Harry Potter is in the UK, they use british words instead of American. Its a British thing. I think its equivalent to the American make-out. So if Harry Potter was written by an American, Harry would have made out with Ginny. Instead, since he is British as they come, he snogs her.

How Can The Word Snog Be Used In A Sentence

What Does Snog Mean?

The word snog can be used in many different ways as a vulgar, slang way to describe two peoples kissing or other escapades. This word is fairly casual, and should be avoided in polite conversation. While the topic of romance in detail is often avoided in formal settings, using a phrase like to have relations with may be more appropriate in professional settings. In this first example, a few teenage boys are discussing their escapades as of late.

Jim: So George, how did the date go last night? I saw you and Jenny heading into the movie theatre. Anything come out of that?

George: Maybe.

Tom: Come on, George, out with it!

Jim: Yeah, come on, tell us.

George: Fine, fine. I know the anticipation is killing you. Yes, we had a proper snog, but nothing more. I am, in fact, a gentleman, and it was, in fact, only our second date, I normally dont kiss and tell but you have broken me.

Tom: Congrats, dude!

Jim: Seriously! Shes one of the prettiest girls in the whole school. Are you going to take her out again?

George: I hope so. Im going to send her a text this afternoon. I dont want to come off too pushy or anything.

Here, George uses the word snog to describe that he kissed the girl he took out on a date the night prior. In this next example, its Valentines Day. Georges parents are getting ready to go out on a date.

Mom: We left you a $20 for pizza. Make sure Jane is in bed by 8:30, and dont drink too much soda.

George: Mom, well be fine. I promise.

George: See you!

Harry & Ginny: Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows

The moment:

Id like you to have something to remember me by, you know, if you meet some Veela when youre off doing whatever youre doing.

I think dating opportunities are going to be pretty thin on the ground, to be honest.

Theres the silver lining Ive been looking for, she whispered, and then she was kissing him as she had never kissed him before, and Harry was kissing her back, and it was blissful oblivion, better than Firewhisky she was the only real thing in the world, Ginny, the feel of her, one hand at her back and one in her long, sweet-smelling hair Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

The verdict: Okay, okay we know weve already got a Ginny and Harry kiss in this article, but we couldnt resist this one! We love that Ginny gave him a kiss rather than a birthday present, although youd think she might have been able to stretch to a Chocolate Frog as well. Turns out theres nothing like a kiss intended to ward off Veela

Our Kiss-O-Meter says:

What’s Happened To You Asked Harry For Hermione Looked Distinctly Disheveled Rather As Though She Had Just Fought Her Way Out Of A Thicket Of Devil’s Snare Oh I’ve Just Escaped I Mean I’ve Just Left Cormac She Said Under The Mistletoe She Added In Explanation As Harry Continued To Look Questioningly At Her

â Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Basically, Rowling is asking us to imagine our beloved Hermione Granger getting groped by the terrible, IMHO, Cormac McLaggen under the mistletoe at a holiday party. Get a little butterbeer in old McLaggen and apparently he gets quite handsy. The Devil’s Snare is no joke, so if McLaggen was that bad then I hope our girl handled him the same way she handled the Snare in the first book.

So Where Is Snogging From Really

  • 2Dec 19 ’13 at 5:20
  • 2What I’d like to know is how many of us in the US heard this term for the very first time through the Harry Potter books!

Paul Beale, ed., Partridge’s Concise Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English offers this entry for the verb snog:

snog, v. ‘To make love with repletion of kissing and cuddling hence, snogging session, making love’ very common throughout WW2 I surmise a dial. alteration of snug, cosy, notably as in that snuggling-up which so often preludes a warmer conjunction. 2. Hence, to flirt, or to court, esp in be or come or go snogging: beatniks’, adopted, ca. 1959 , ex gen s. The term, esp as be or go snogging, seems to have orig in the RAF, late 1930s .

However, Eric Partridge, A Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English, Fifth Edition suggests a slightly different etymology:

snogging, be or go. To be or go courting a girl to be or go love-making: RAF: since ca. 1937. Partridge 1945, ‘Snog is perhaps a blend of snug and cod .’

That same source notes that “snogged up”supposedly an RAF term dating to circa 1939means “Smartened up, ‘all dressed up.'”

The OED defines snog as follows:

snog, v : kiss and cuddle amorously the pair were snogging on the sofa : he snogged my girl at a party

snog, n: a long kiss or a period of amorous kissing and cuddling: he gave her a proper snog, not just a peck

Origin: 1940s: of unknown origin

Which isn’t terribly helpful and is already given in the question.

Things Parents Should Know About Harry Potter And The Half

What Does Harry Potter Mean to You?

__1. Will I like it? __Let’s put it this way: if you liked the books and prior films, you’ll like the movie. At this point, I think the films are starting to take the story to places the book never did. David Yates is the most even-handed director to date, and the result is a very good film, mostly because he doesn’t tamper with the aesthetic. Not to mention the performances are quite stellar. I was most impressed by Tom Felton’s tortured Draco Malfoy his chops have quite improved.

__2. Will my kids like it? __It depends if they’re die-hard Potter fans or not. There are a few scenes added to the film that were not in the books, and some other divergences. I know when I was young, that sort of thing really irked me. But Yates makes up for this by, once again, making the books simply come to life on screen. The special effects are pervasive but subtle, and the world just teems with detail.

3. Is this a kissing movie?Well, um, yeah. Kinda. Readers of the books will not be surprised, of course, but there is a quite a lot of snogging in the sixth installment of the Harry Potter series. Add to that a fair share of sexual innuendo and tension, and it makes for a much more lighthearted movie than the last few. The kids are growing up, after all!

5. What’s the best time to use the loo? When Harry goes to Slughorn’s party. Either one. Or during snogging.

Have You Been Spying On Him Too Said Harry Indignantly What D’you Do Sneak Up Here In The Evenings To Watch The Prefects Take Bathssometimes Said Myrtle Rather Slyly But I’ve Never Come Out To Speak To Anyone Before

â Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Let’s just take a moment to appreciate the general weirdness of this scene. Our currently naked 14-year-old hero finds himself watched by a ghostly peeping tom who travels through the plumbing to apparently spy on teenagers taking baths. I repeat, there is a ghost floating around Hogwarts watching you in the bathroom. And the best part is, Myrtle is pretty brazen about the whole thing. She’s like, “Yeah I watch hot Prefects while they’re bathing, wouldn’t you?” Myrtle, you are the thirstiest ghost in the HP series.

But Unbidden Into His Mind Came An Image Of That Same Deserted Corridor With Himself Kissing Ginny Instead The Monster In His Chest Purred

â Harry Potter and the Half -Blood Prince

One of my favorite reoccurring images of Half-Blood Prince is Harry’s inner lust-monster that seems to pop up whenever Ginny is around. When some people try to deal with their sudden raging hormones, they may feel jealous or infatuated. When Harry starts to deal with his raging hormones, he feels like he has some sort of insatiable beast living inside him that will only be satisfied when he has ripped his competition limb from limb and has claimed his mate. I’m sure there’s some really fantastic dirty HP fanfiction out there that makes great use of Harry’s inner lust-monster, just as Rowling probably intended.

Where Does The Word Snogging Come From

Where does the word snogging come from, in the sense of canoodling? Im looking for it etymology, not for its connotation or phonoaesthetic properties, as the answer of the other question provides.

The OED says that its origin is unknown, as does Etymonline. The latter claims that the word is said to have originated in British India, but says nothing more than that.

Citations in the OED date back only to 1945, so this came to us within living memory: we ought to be able to track it down. Here are two of its later citations:

  • 1966 P. Willmott Adolescent Boys iii. 40, I went upstairs with Jill and we did a bit of snogging on the bed.
  • 1975 Weekend 4 Feb. 19/1 If a cinema manager tolerates snogging among his audience he is liable to lose his licence.

All the derived terms like snog and snogger ultimately lead to snogging, which leads to a dead end.

Ron Weasley & Lavender Brown: Harry Potter And The Half

30+ Best

The moment:

There, in full view of the whole room, stood Ron wrapped so closely around Lavender Brown it was hard to tell whose hands were whose.

It looks like hes eating her face, doesnt it? said Ginny dispassionately. But I suppose hes got to refine his technique somehow. Good game, Harry.Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

The verdict: Weve chosen Ron and Lavenders first kiss for our Kiss-O-Meter, but this was by no means the last. Poor Harry had to put up with their persistent snogging. We were told that Lavender seemed to regard any moment that she was not kissing Ron as a moment wasted well, she certainly gets ten out of ten for effort. Although this particular kiss did break Hermiones heart so that may affect our Kiss-O-Meter

What Is The Meaning Of The Word Snog

What is the definition of snog? According to Vocabulary, Lexico, and other English dictionary apps, the term snog is a chiefly British slang term that means to kiss, to cuddle, or to make out. People might use this term to refer to a couple that is making out in front of them in a movie theatre, for example.

Harry Potter & Ginny Weasley: Harry Potter And The Half

The moment:

Harry looked around there was Ginny running towards him she had a hard, blazing look in her face as she threw her arms around him. And without thinking, without planning it, without worrying about the fact that fifty people were watching, Harry kissed her.

After several long moments or it might have been half an hour or possibly several sunlit days they broke apart.Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

The verdict: We love how Harry seemed at this moment. Harry, whod been plagued with the mystery of Malfoy, learning the true horror of Horcruxes with Dumbledore and following Riddles past for most of Half-Blood Prince, finally gets to experience something wonderful. And dont even get us started on Ginnys blazing look, fresh from her Quidditch glory and determined to get what she wants.

Fang & Just About Anyone He Meets: Harry Potter And The Philosophers Stone

What Does Harry Potter Mean To You?

The moment:

He let them in, struggling to keep a hold on the collar of an enormous black boarhound.

There was only one room inside. Hams and pheasants were hanging from the ceiling, a copper kettle was boiling on the open fire and in a corner stood a massive bed with a patchwork quilt over it.

Make yerselves at home, said Hagrid, letting go of Fang, who bounded straight at Ron and started licking his ears. Like Hagrid, Fang was clearly not as fierce as he looked.Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

The verdict: Although Fang licking your ears might drench you in dog slobber, we reckon youd still feel pretty loved by his canine kisses. It seemed like Fang wasnt fussy but Umbridge didnt get the same treatment Harry, Ron and Hermione did. Dogs are much cleverer than they look. Just saying.

  • Harry Potter: Book Vs Movie Kisses

Prepare for some fluff. Harry Potter has a surprising number of kisses we all looked forward to when we made the journey to the theater. Lets compare the book vs. movie kisses and reminisce about their differences.

    Cho Chang and Harry Potter

Harrys first crush came with an abundance of teen angst. Cho Chang was the object of Harrys fantasies for two years before they finally shared a kiss. The books kissing scene is much more telling of Chos personality. While Harry is squirming internally with nerves, Cho is experiencing a range of emotions that could be held in a full measuring cup. In the book, Cho is clearly conflicted about liking Harry a completely normal emotion for a girl who just lost a boyfriend. Hermione reveals that Chos traumatic loss has haunted her throughout the year when Harry divulges his wet kiss with a crying Cho to his friends. Perhaps Cho is less likable as a person in the book, but can you blame her? I would probably display jealousy for Hermione Granger if I were dealing with the murder of Cedric Diggory at 16 years old. Harry doesnt know how to deal with his own pain and is at a loss when it comes to talking to Cho and engaging in a healing dialogue. Harrys ability to empathize and understand how he should have navigated the situation with Cho after the Madam Puddifoots Tea Shop fiasco probably helped him in the future with his relationship with Ginny.
