Even Stephen King Was Freaked Out By Dolores Umbridge

Forget Voldemort one-time Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Dolores Umbridge has been deemed one of fiction’s creepiest villains by none other than famed horror writer Stephen King.

“The gently smiling Dolores Umbridge, with her girlish voice, toadlike face, and clutching, stubby fingers, is the greatest make-believe villain to come along since Hannibal Lecter,” King wrote in his 2009 review of “Order of the Phoenix” for Entertainment Weekly.

The actor has been able to step out of the Dudley-shaped shadow.

The Harry Potterfranchise was more than just a game-changing box office success that signified the resurgence of both fantasy films and young adult novel adaptations. It was a global phenomenon in which a portion of the audience got to grow up with characters that they knew and loved for a decade few film sagas in history have generated such emotional responses to the films, the characters, and the respective actors who portrayed them. While this created a unique success story that did certainly advance the careers of everyone involved, it did create an issue for the actors that wanted to distinguish themselves within their next projects. Its hard to not be viewed as a certain character from one of the most popular franchises of all time if you were playing them for ten years. However, Dudley Dursley himself, Harry Melling, has managed to avoid this issue altogether and shed his Harry Potter persona to become one of the most interesting character actors working today.

Early On The Books Were Extremely Controversial And In Many Ways They Still Are

How to Watch Harry Potter (All Seasons) Free & Paid Options

Part of what made Harry Potter such a literary phenomenon is that so many kids were reading the books despite an unprecedented number of attempts to get them to stop reading the books.

The Harry Potter series, like many works of fantasy, involves wizardry and witchcraft. The feeling that the books thus promoted the occult proved to be the basis for constant challenges to the series presence in school libraries and bookstores by concerned conservative parents. The books first topped the American Library Associations list of the most banned books of the year in 1999, and remained in the top spot for most of the next decade.

In some regions, pressure to censor the series was so high it led to lawsuits: In 2003, a judge ordered an Arkansas school district that had removed the books from schools due to promotion of the religion of witchcraft to return them. Similar formal attempts at removal persisted into the latter half of the decade, and the books continue to rile up conservative religious leaders who warn of its demonic influence.

All of this controversy speaks not only to concerns that Rowlings work would negatively influence children, but to the reality that many of those children grew up to be arguably even more progressive than the books they grew up reading which is, in a way, a confirmation of conservatives worst fears about the series.

Some Of The Most Expensive Costumes To Make Were The Hogwarts Uniforms

Since they included silk ties and wool sweaters, the Hogwarts uniforms were some of the most expensive costumes in the series to make.

“I never wanted to use anything but the most perfect material,” she previously told Insider. “The ties are in silk, we used wool , we used a very expensive material for the gowns.”

But Temime said these looks were worth the investment since “Harry Potter” film shoots could last a while and cheaper materials “would have looked terrible after one month.”

Harry Potter And The Half

In the sixth book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry enters a tumultuous puberty that, Rowling says, is based on her and her younger sister’s own difficult teenage years. Rowling also made an intimate statement about Harry’s personal life: “Because of the demands of the adventure that Harry is following, he has had less sexual experience than boys of his age might have had.” This inexperience with romance was a factor in Harry’s failed relationship with Cho. Now his thoughts concern Ginny, and a vital plot point in the last chapter includes Harry ending their budding romance to protect her from Voldemort.

This book also focuses on the mysterious activities of Harry’s rival Draco Malfoy. Voldemort has coerced a frightened Malfoy into attempting to kill Dumbledore. During a duel in Moaning Myrtle‘s bathroom, Harry uses the Half-Blood Prince’s spell, Sectumsempra, on Malfoy, who suffers near-fatal injuries as a result. Harry is horrified by what he has done and also comes to feel sympathy for Draco, after learning he was forced to do Voldemort’s bidding under the threat of his and his parents’ deaths.

Every Horcrux In Harry Potter Explained

What Happened to These 10 Characters AFTER the Deathly Hallows? – Harry Potter Explained

In the Harry Potter universe, a Horcrux is an object imbued by a dark witch or wizard with a piece of that person’s soul in order to obtain immortality. It’s created by an act of murder, followed by a spell and a “horrific act” . A Horcrux can be an inanimate object or a living thing, though objects are obviously more stable since they don’t die of natural causes.

Voldemort probably learned about Horcruxes through the book “Secrets of the Darkest Art,” which was in the Hogwarts library before Dumbeldore hid it in his office. As Hogwarts student Tom Marvolo Riddle, Voldemort also asked Professor Horace Slughorn about Horcruxes, which Dumbledore discovered years later and was rather angry about, considering Voldemort’s eventual terrorization of the world.

When Voldemort was killed in the First Wizarding War, his spirit managed to remain in a semi-alive state, allowing him to regain power, control others, and eventually return, all because many pieces of his soul were hidden throughout various Horcruxes in Harry Potter’s world. In order to truly defeat Voldemort, all of the Horcruxes had to be destroyed. Voldemort’s soul was divided into seven different Horcruxes, some living things and some objects. A few things went down a bit differently in the books than in the movies, but for the most part, the essentials are the same. Here are all of the Horcruxes explained.

Rowling Planned In Advance Who Would Meet A Grim Fate In The Series But She Decided To Spare One Character’s Life At The Last Minute

Character deaths are one of the narrative elements that Rowling plotted in advance.

Originally, she planned for Ron’s dad, Arthur Weasley, to meet a grim fate in “Order of the Phoenix” but she changed her mind.

“I think part of the reason for that is there were very few good fathers in the book,” she said in an interview with “Today” in 2007. “In fact, you could make a very good case for Arthur Weasley being the only good father in the whole series.”

Harry Potter Reading Level

Harry is 11 years old in the first book of the series and 17 by the final book, and children usually like to read about characters that are their age or a few years older.

Furthermore, as the books advance, not only does Harry grow older and the material becomes darker, but the books themselves get longer, which is usually indicated for older readers.

They were labeled for only middle school students at the K-8 schools. Some of the subjects are a little confusing for the younger children to learn, which can make reading the books difficult for the children who are too young.

These books are supposed to be read when a child gets older, because you would not want a child younger than second grade reading the seventh book, because even then, they will need to be a little more advanced than the normal second grader.

The reading level is determined by the semantic difficulty and syntactic ambiguity of the text, which are incompatible with the cognitive appropriateness of the text.

Often, these texts are composed at a higher degree than can be implied by the texts substance and structure. When pairing intermediate readers with texts at a suitable developmental age, texts labeled NC is helpful.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry, Ron, and Hermione leave Hogwarts to complete Dumbledore’s task: to search for and destroy Voldemort’s remaining four Horcruxes, then find and kill the Dark Lord. The three pit themselves against Voldemort’s newly formed totalitarianpolice state, an action that tests Harry’s courage and moral character. Voldemort’s seizure of the Ministry of Magic leads to discriminatory and genocidal policies against Muggle-borns, fuelled by propaganda and fear. According to J. K. Rowling, telling scenes are when Harry uses Cruciatus Curse and Imperius Curse, unforgivable curses for torture and mind-control, on Voldemort’s servants, and also when he casts Sectumsempra on Draco Malfoy during the bathroom fight in the sixth book. Each time shows a “flawed and mortal” side to Harry. However, she explains, “He is also in an extreme situation and attempting to defend somebody very good against a violent and murderous opponent.”

Harry experiences occasional disturbing visions of Draco being forced to perform the Death Eaters’ bidding and feels “…sickened…by the use to which Draco was now being put by Voldemort,” again showing his compassion for an enemy.

Harry Potter Fandom Also Paved The Way For The Mainstreaming Of Fandom And Geek Culture

Harry Potter has a tremendously outsized cultural reach: One 2011 survey suggested that a third of all American adults ages 18 to 34 at the time had read at least one of the books. But what really makes Harry Potter stand out is the way people loved Harry Potter.

First and foremost, the series helped make it cool to be a geek. This pattern coincided with the rise of Web 2.0 that is, an increasingly interactive and social internet. As more Harry Potter fans became more active online, they made discussion of YA fiction, fantasy, and science fiction seem commonplace.

And Harry Potter fans creativity is still being felt in and outside of the fandom. In the early 2000s, Harry Potter fan forums, fanfiction and fan art archives, and email discussion groups exploded across the internet. Harry Potter conventions drew thousands of fans, and Harry Potter cosplay became a well-known sight at larger geek and comic cons.

A number of Harry Potter fans also went on to make significant marks on mainstream culture. As a member of the University of Michigan theater troupe Starkid, a young Darren Criss starred as Harry Potter in the viral YouTube video A Very Potter Musical, and his popularity catapulted him into the role of Blaine on Glee and a career on Broadway.
