Hermione Showed The Effectiveness Of Immobulus On A Bunch Of Unruly Cornish Pixies
As with most spells that Harry never visibly uses in the movies, Hermione is shown using Immobulus after Gilderoy Lockhart’s Defence Against The Dark Arts class goes awry due to his inability to calm down a group of Cornish Pixies.
The Freezing Charm Immobulus can immobilize and render a living or moving target motionless and still, which helped to collect the fast and unruly Cornish Pixies. The spell was on the Charms curriculum and was taught to second years, meaning that Harry would likely know it himself, even if the quickness of decision making and using the relevant spell was Hermione’s expertise.

List Of All The Harry Potter Spells
Posted on Last updated:
We love Harry Potter around here. Books, movie, theme park attractions: The Wizarding World is one we dig. I wish there was a spell to transport me right now! Ill have to check the list of all the Harry Potter spells to see if theres one that might work.
While Im a total Muggle, I wish I was enrolled in Hogwarts. Alas, my letter never arrived.
If it had, Im sure I would be House Hufflepuff, and Id definitely be on the Quiddich team. And probably Head Girl too.
Hey, if were going to dream, lets dream big!
But Im not a wizard, even though I played one at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter once. And yes, this photoshoot was as epic as it looks!
My friend Meghan tried Immobulus on me and I shouted my favorite Harry Potter spell, Protego! back.
Nothing happened, but it was fun to shout spells at each other anyway!
If youre looking for a list of Harry Potter spells to try on your friends Ive got you covered.
This list of Harry Potter spells are based only on the books and I know theres more that comes from the movies. When I sit down to watch from my favorite list of Harry Potter movies in order, Ill try to make a better note of things!
The Really Useless/worse Than Useless Harry Potter Spells
81. Avada Kedavra
It’s used to kill people, it’s an Unforgivable Curse, and it was Voldemort’s favourite, so it’s going last. There’s probably a big philosophical debate we could get into about violent curses like this would this one have been okay to use on an evil dark wizard, for instance? but we’re going to take the tack that murder is bad and leave it there.
Yep, this is another Unforgivable Curse that Harry actually attempts to cast himself a couple of times, but nobody’s perfect, right? It’s also yet another spell that could land you in a cell with some Dementors .
We know what you’re thinking: Why is a spell that Harry Potter busts out in order to retrieve a horcrux so low down on the list of usefulness? Wouldn’t the whole wizarding world be a different place if Harry hadn’t used the Imperius Curse to sneak into Gringotts? Well, maybe. But if we’re looking at this thing objectively, an Unforgivable Curse which puts the victim under the caster’s complete control is both a) obviously super evil, and b) a good way to get yourself locked up in Azkaban for life.
Baddies use this one to conjure the Dark Mark in the sky. You don’t want to be a baddie, do you?
77. Brackium Emendo
74. Slugulus Eructo
This one covers an enemy in boils, which is very icky and very mean.
71. Locomotor Wibbly

Harry Potter: 10 Spells Harry Technically Knows
There were several spells that were obviously or allegedly a part of their school curriculum but were never actually seen being used by Harry Potter.
Upon its introduction as a franchise back in 1997 with the books and later with the movies, the Harry Potter franchise was a breath of fresh air to readers and audiences worldwide, with the pure magic of it all.
With spells and magic being the name of the game in the Harry Potter universe, the audience was essentially learning about spells and all things magic at the same time as the students. However, just because all manner of spells and charms were taught in classes and used by all sorts of witches and wizards, doesn’t mean that the main characters, particularly Harry, were seen utilizing all of them. There were several spells that were obviously or allegedly a part of their school curriculum but were never actually seen being used by Harry, even if he may have known them.
Magic In Harry Potter
In J. K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter series, magic is depicted as a supernatural force that can be used to override the usual laws of nature. Many fictional magical creatures exist in the series, while ordinary creatures also sometimes exhibit magical properties. Magical objects are also described. The small number of humans who are able to perform magic refer to the rest of the population, oblivious to the existence of magic, as “Muggles” in the United Kingdom and “No-Maj” in the United States.
In humans, magic or the lack thereof is an inborn attribute. It is usually inherited, carried on “dominant resilient genes”. Magic is the norm for the children of magical couples and less common in those of Muggles. Exceptions exist: those unable to do magic who are born to magical parents are known as Squibs, whereas a witch or wizard born to Muggle parents is known as a Muggle-born, or by the derogatory term “Mudblood”. While Muggle-borns are quite common, Squibs are extremely rare.
Rowling based many magical elements of the Harry Potter universe on real-world mythology and magic. She has described this as “a way of giving texture to the world”. The books present the idea that the Muggle interpretation of these stories is a distorted version of what goes on in the wizarding world.

Harry Potter Spell List Starts With L
- Levicorpus: a nonverbal spell that causes the victim to hang upside down by his or her ankles. The victims head down and feet up.
- Liberacorpus: the nonverbal countercurse to Levicorpus.
- Locomotor: causes an object to rise above and move when the caster commands.
- Lumos: projects a beam/flash of light from the casters wand.
Confundo Used To Confuse Opponents
Here’s an easy one. Confundo is the exact first-person conjugation of the Latin verb “confundere.” The prefix con- means “with or together” and the suffix -fundo means “to pour.” When put together, the word literally means something like “mix,” but is now figuratively used to be “jumble or confuse.”
Obliviate Was Used By Hermione & Probably Taught By Lockhart In Second Year
Obliviate will mainly be remembered for the emotional scene kickstarting The Deathly Hallows Part 1, when Hermione used it on her parents to erase herself from their memories in order to protect them. Known as the Memory Charm, it was also Gilderoy Lockhart’s forte with it allegedly being the only spell that he could use without making a mistake during Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, before Ron’s broken wand made sure that wasn’t true either.
The spell being entrusted to Hermione to use on Dolohov in The Deathly Hallows implies that it’s a difficult spell, but the Memory Charm was allegedly in the Standard Book Of Spells that the students had to purchase, implying that it was taught in the Charm’s second-year curriculum. This spell arguably should not be taught to children of that age, due to how dangerous it can be.
Amato Animo Animato Animagus
This is a transfiguration spell used to turn the user into an Animagus, giving them the ability to into an animal at will. The process is long and arduous and includes saying the incantation twice a day, every day before drinking the Animagus Potion.
Sirius Black, James Potter, and Peter Pettigrew became Animagi to help Remus Lupin through his werewolf transformations.

Harry Never Used The Killing Curse Avada Kedavra Himself But Witnessed It On Numerous Occasions
Avada Kedavra, commonly known as the Killing Curse, is one of the most well-known spells and arguably the strongest, simply due to the devastation that it causes. Not only did Harry lose his parents to the spell at the hands of Lord Voldemort, but Avada Kedavra was ultimately responsible for nearly all of the major deaths, from the likes of Cedric Diggory and Sirius Black to Professor Dumbledore.
The Killing Curse was taught by Alastor Moody, who was really Barty Crouch Jr. using the disguise via Polyjuice Potion, in Harry’s fourth year at Hogwarts in Defence Against The Dark Arts, but it was ultimately just a demonstration of all the Unforgivable Curses. Harry was surrounded by enough death and destruction to know how to use the spell, but never stooped to that level of evil.
List Of Spells In Harry Potter
Spells in Harry Potter occur in the fictional wizarding world of the series of books by author J. K. Rowling. Magic spells are used by many of the characters to achieve useful effects without the benefit of modern technology. The main depiction of a “spell” in the Harry Potter books consists of a gesture made with the character’s wand, combined with a spoken or mentalincantation. In the books and the associated film series, the names of the majority of these spells or the incantations used to effect them are derived from the classical languages, particularly Latin. These names are not grammatically correct in any language most spoken phrases resemble Latin words of appropriate meaning but are not proper Latin themselves.
In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the concept of casting spells nonverbally is introduced. Earlier, every spell cast by the principal characters had been accompanied by the appropriate voiced incantation, although advanced adult practitioners of magic had cast nonverbal spells in previous books. Consequently, the incantations used for some spells introduced in Half-Blood Prince and its sequel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows are unavailable.

Principal Exceptions To Gamp’s Law Of Elemental Transfiguration
The Principal Exceptions to Gamp’s Law of Elemental Transfiguration is a magical theory mentioned by Hermione and later repeated by Ron in the final book. She explains that food is one of these: witches or wizards can cook and prepare food using magic, and even multiply it, but not create it out of nothing. There are numerous examples in the series of food appearing to have been conjured from nothing, such as the sudden materialisation of ingredients in the pots of Molly Weasley’s kitchen and when Professor McGonagall creates a self-refilling plate of sandwiches for Harry and Ron in Chamber of Secrets. In all cases, these events can be reasonably explained as food either being multiplied or transported from elsewhere. One example of the latter is banqueting at Hogwartsâthe food is prepared by elves in the kitchens and laid onto four replica tables, directly below the actual house tables in the Great Hall. The food is then magically transported to the tables.
This is the only exception mentioned explicitly in the series. However, Rowling herself has stated once in an interview that money is something wizards cannot simply materialise out of thin air, or the economic system of the wizarding world would then be gravely flawed and disrupted. While the Philosopher’s Stone does permit alchemy, this is portrayed as an extremely rare, even unique, object, whose owner does not exploit its powers.

A Closer Look At A Few Spells
Heres a closer look at some of them: The spell Alohomora is used to open and unlock doors. The word is supposedly from the West African Sidiki dialect and means friendly to thieves.
Need to make invisible ink appear? Try the spell Aparecium, which supposedly derives from the Latin appareo, meaning to become visible or to appear.
Heres a fun one: Confringo. It causes something to explode in flames. The spell is likely derived from Latin and means to break in pieces, to bring to naught.Densuageo is derived from two Latin words: dens, which means tooth, and , which means to enlarge. The spell causes the victims teeth to grow quickly.
The spell Episkey is derived from the Greek episkeu, which means repair, restoration. Its used to heal minor injuries, such as Harry Potters broken nose in Half-Blood Prince.Protego Horribilis is also used in Deathly Hallows. It provides protection against Dark Magic and comes from the Latin protego, meaning to protect, and horribilis, meaning horrible.Scourgify, which is a spell used to get something clean, such as Hedwigs cage, is likely a play on the word scour.
The spell Tarantallegra makes a victims legs dance uncontrollably. Its likely that it combines the Italian allegra, which means joyful, and tarantella, which is a Southern Italian folk dance with rapid movements.
