Why Dumbledore Was Recast

Who played dumbledore.

In the first two Harry Potter films, Dumbledore is portrayed by Richard Harris. Unfortunately, after the second film was completed, Harris died. This put Warner Brothers in an unenviable position of replacing a major character in their franchise. This was particularly difficult for this series, as WB knew they had at least five more films Dumbledore would need to appear in. That meant that whoever they cast would have to be the right fit for the role. Recasting again could throw off the franchises continuity even more.;

The studio ended up going with veteran actor Michael Gambon. Gambon played Dumbledore starting with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and finished out the series as the character, with his last appearance coming in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II.;

Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, who has had an incredible impact on magical events over the course of the 20th century. However as interesting as Albus Dumbledore is, his family history is also worthy of a discussion

The Dumbledore name is a name that stretches back centuries as its meaning is a forgotten old English word for bumblebee. Itâs noteworthy to mention that the line is facing extinction.

The latest and last descendant of the line, Aberforth, never married nor had any children.

However familyâs earliest known recorded descendant, Percival Dumbledore. Now Percival was an honourable man and quite a talented wizard. He had an array of spells in his arson and was quite a strict father.

He was born sometime before 1864 and its not exactly known if he attended Hogwarts School of witchcraft and wizardry but with that being said, as he was British based and his sons attended the school, Iâd say itâs safe to correctly assume that he also attended as a boy. Thereâs no information on his father or ancestors which once again shows how badly the potter universe has stagnated since it finished, which is rather frustrating as it would be awesome to see more of a backstory on the family history.

Anyway, weâll work with what we have. So Percival was married to Kendra who was best described as a fine woman,

Why Sir Ian Mckellen Turned Down The Role Of Professor Dumbledore In Harry Potter

In 2002, Harris passed away in between the filming of;Harry Potter and the;Chamber of Secrets;and;Harry Potter and the;Prisoner of Azkaban. McKellen opted not to replace him because apparently Harris had been critical of McKellens work, calling him;technically brilliant, but passionless. Because of that nonsense statement, McKellen was turned off by the idea of taking over for the role.

When he died, he played Dumbledore, the wizard. I played the real wizard, McKellen said. When they called me up and said would I be interested in being in the;Harry Potter;films, they wouldnt say what part, I worked out what they were thinking. And I couldnt. I couldnt take over the part from an actor who Id known didnt approve of me.

Apart from the shade about playing a real wizard, I respect McKellens decision to ultimately not take on the role. He knew Harris wasnt a huge fan of his, and stepping into his shoes just didnt feel right. Plus, did he really need Harry Potter when he had The;Lord of the Rings?

McKellen made the decision out of respect rather than bitterness or anger, and I doff my cap to him. That said, Im sure him playing Dumbledore would have been instantly iconic.

And even though McKellen didnt actually play Dumbledore, Im one of those people who always assumed he and Michael Gambon were one and the same. And it turns out, McKellen feels the same. When I see the posters of Mike Gambon I think sometimes it is me.

Same, sir, same.
