Harry Potter And The Philosophers Stone:

Harry , Ron, and Hermione deduce that the store under the trapdoor is the Philosophers Stone , which can change metal into gold and can also give immortality. They next discover that Voldemort has been shooting unicorns in the Forbidden Forest and sipping their blood, another way to obtain immortality.

Harry Potter has contributed considerably to modern culture in the English speaking world but what about its impact on the English language? Resident language researcher Matt Norton takes a look using data from the Cambridge English Corpus and the Spoken British National Corpus.

Invented Words Proper Nouns And Names

Rowling invented a great number of words and phrases for the books such as spells, incantations, magical words, items, and place names. Many of these words involve wordplay, rhyming, and historical references that are difficult to translate. A large number of spells are drawn from or inspired by Latin, and have a certain resonance with English speakers due to its relatively large proportion of Latinate-derived vocabulary. For example, priori incantatem would be familiar to many English-speaking readers as the words prior and incantation . To create a similar effect in the Hindi version, the Sanskrit, typical in mantras, has been used for the spells. Some translators have created new words themselves others have resorted to transliteration.

Similarly, in Harry Potter and the Philosopherâs Stone, when Professor McGonagall is about to introduce Harry to Oliver Wood, she asks another professor if she can “borrow Wood for a moment”, momentarily confusing Harry in order to retain this wordplay, the Yiddish translation renames Wood as “Oliver Holtz”, “holtz” being the Yiddish for wood, unlike the Italian one, which changed the surname to “Baston”, from “bastone”, “stick”, but returned to the original “Wood” with the second translation.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows

Harry swears to personally kill all of Voldemorts Horcruxes.

As we found in Half-Blood Prince, Horcruxes are artifacts that hold fragments of Voldemorts soul, effectively making him invincible.

That means that if Harry is to have a chance of confronting Voldemort, he must first find and destroy the Horcruxes.

The book follows the events that occurred immediately after Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and the actual conflict between the wizards Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort.

It retains the Guinness World Record for the most novels sold in the first 24 hours of publication, with 8.3 million sold in the United States and 2.65 million sold in the United Kingdom.

Rowling used to write her latest set of stories beginning in 2013 the Cormoran Strike series. While this book, the first in the series, did moderately well at the onset, sales jumped by 150,000% after it was revealed that she was the actual author. It also made it onto your TV screens with the BBC One show Strike. Wed say thats a decent indicator that people respect your reputation as a writer.

Words Reused Or Repopularized By The Harry Potter Books

Table 2. Changes over time to Harry Potter related words in the Cambridge English Corpus

Dementor is an old Latin word meaning one who makes crazy or dements. It has been revived by Rowling , and its use sharply increases in the nineties. Again, we frequently see this word used in the Cambridge English Corpus in a non-Harry Potter sense:I called my kid a Dementor. Bad Mama! A gorgeous sweet friendly Dementor, who laughs at rolling soccer balls and squirty bath toys, but still.

Squib is a strange English word. Its origin is apparently an imitation of a not very impressive explosion e.g. made by a firework and we have the term damp squib, meaning disappointment. There are actually many senses of this word though not often used. In Harry Potter a squib is a wizard born without magical powers, something very rare, much less common than the opposite mudblood. Use of squib declines over the 20th century but the CEC shows it increases after Potter. Apparate are words reused by Rowling to mean make oneself appear or disappear magically of course. Bludger occurs only once in the corpus before Potter . Although it seems to have some obscure senses, mainly Australian slang for freeloader, it has over 300 occurrences so this could be a big increase in use due to Potter.

Think Before You Click

Kate Bevan, editor of Which? Computing magazine, pointed out that both Android and Apple devices now signpost more clearly what permissions an app is seeking – such as access to a device’s microphone, camera or location.

“When you install an app, take a couple of minutes to think about what it’s asking to do, and if you’re not comfortable allowing an app access to your contacts, for example, then think twice about whether you want to install the app,” she said.”It is important for businesses to communicate in a way that users understand.”

At an event last year, Simon McDougall, a senior executive at the UK Information Commissioner’s Office, described the “I agree” button at the end of terms and conditions documents as “one of the biggest lies on the internet”.

“How many people are actually reading these things, how many are actually clicking, because it is quite scary how the muscle memory is building up as these hands are just clicking their way through,” he said, as reported by the website IT Pro.

Harry Potter And The Cursed Child

Cursed Child and the subsequent stage play, though not part of the original seven-book series, have been widely known additions to the Harry Potter canon.

This 336-page novel takes off where the Deathly Hallows epilogue left off, with Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Malfoy sending their unfortunate-named children off to Hogwarts this time, Harrys son Albus and Malfoys son Scorpius act as our protagonists.

When the boys arrive at Hogwarts, they are all sorted into Slytherin and form an unexpected relationship, which inevitably creates friction between Albus and Harry over the course of the next few years.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child can be a little frustrating at times, thanks to the many timelines and different versions of the same characters and its somewhat far-fetched plot points and dubious continuity with Rowlings existing universe have prompted some Potter fans to criticize it.

Still, at the end of the day, its yet another piece of the elusive puzzle that weve always had so much fun piecing together: this once-in-a-lifetime reading opportunity that surpasses society and centuries.

To find which spells are used most often, we compared our dataframe containing information about how many times each word is used and a list of the first word in each spell. We did this because the only times that the first word in a spell is used is when they are saying the entire spell. This allowed us to use inner_join to get our frequencies of each spell. It is interesting to note that expecto patronum is the most used spell in the series, and the least used in a four-way tie between confundo, liberacorpus, morsmordre, and rictusempra.
