What Happened To The Cast Of Harry Potter

In the aftermath of the overwhelming success of writer J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter book series, film adaptations were an inevitability… and only a few years after the books started hitting shelves in 1997, the film series kicked off in 2001 with the release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Unsurprisingly, the films were a huge success as well, and as the books wrapped up their own journey, Warner Bros. assembled several different directors and a talented cast made up of new finds and established British actors to tell the story on the big screen.

Throughout eight films the seventh and final book, Deathly Hallows, was split into two movies an enormous group of actors brought the Harry Potter books to life, with young talents at the forefront who were flanked by familiar faces. In the years since the Harry Potter film franchise ended in 2011, many of the performers from the movies have continued working steadily… and sadly, some of these actors have passed away. Here’s what’s happened to the enormous ensemble cast of Harry Potter over the years.

The Transformation Of Matthew Lewis From Harry Potter To Now

Matthew Lewis remains beloved by the Harry Potter generation as the bumbling, big-hearted Neville Longbottom. After scoring his breakout role in 2001’s “The Sorcerer’s Stone,” Lewis transformed from Slytherin’s punching bag to a snake-slaying hero but this has not been his only transfiguration.

Longbottom remains Lewis’ best remembered role for many, and the understated actor has noted his gratitude for the gig that took him from muggle to mega-star. “If there’s something people remember you by, there are worse things than the Harry Potter franchise,” he told Metro. “It opened so many doors for me when I otherwise wouldn’t even have gotten in the room.”

But it’s also been a source of frustration and an understandable one, given his diverse credits to date. “I’ve been in dramas that have won BAFTAs and done all of this kind of stuff,” Lewis told the Inside of You podcast in March. “And I’m not bragging it’s just like I’ve done all this stuff and like 10 years later it’s still like people are making the claim I’ve sort of jumped from ‘Harry Potter’ into this and have completely ignored the journey it’s taken to get there.”

Like many of his Hogwarts classmates in the decade since graduation, the young actor has springboarded from the Wizarding World to a variety of dramatic projects on the big and small screens, and his success today has not happened by magic.

Neville Longbottom Actor Matthew Lewis Says He Finds Watching His Harry Potter Performance Painful

Matthew Lewis said that he finds his performance as Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter movies painful to watch as he sees too much of himself in the awkward Gryffindor student.

In an interview with the New York Times, Lewis was promoting his new PBS series All Creatures Great and Small, and told the publication he doesnt like playing characters similar to himself.

I find it quite difficult when too much of me starts to come through in a character. Its easier when I can play someone completely different, like a police officer in London or someone whos wealthy, Lewis said, before addressing the character that launched him into the film industry: Neville Longbottom.

At times its painful how much of me there is in Neville. When Im watching, Im like, thats not Neville thats you.’

Lewis started out as the lovable but clumsy Neville, but has matured since into something of a hearthrob, culminating in this role as the lead love interest in All Creatures Great and Small and best summarized when he was the cover star of Attitude Magazine in 2015.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows

Neville Longbottom

With Harry’s absence and the control of Hogwarts in the hands of Severus Snape and Death Eaters Alecto and Amycus Carrow in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Neville spends much of his seventh year at Hogwarts as the resistance leader against Voldemort’s takeover. Together with Ginny and Luna, Neville reactivates Dumbledore’s Army, stepping into the leadership position in Harry’s absence and helping students who were tormented under the new regime. Neville reveals that the Carrows beat him and that the Death Eaters targeted his grandmother when Neville was acting up at school. Neville goes into hiding in the Room of Requirement, which he shows an incredible ability to control. Upon Harry’s return to Hogwarts, Neville sends messages to the D.A., which in turn gathers the Order of the Phoenix.

During the Battle of Hogwarts, he is spotted twice by Harry using his knowledge of Herbology to help ward off the attackers. He is later seen helping Oliver Wood carry the body of Colin Creevey. When Voldemort returns with Harry’s apparently lifeless body, Neville defies him, and decapitates Nagini with the Sword of Godric Gryffindor , thus destroying the final Horcrux and making Voldemort mortal once again. When the battle goes to the Great Hall, he is shown assisting Ron in taking down Fenrir Greyback. After the battle is won, Neville is shown surrounded by a group of admirers.

The Harry Potter franchise has entertained audiences for decades, starting with J.K. Rowlings original series of novels. The eight-film franchise is also beloved, having launched the careers of a number of young actors. This includes Matthew Lewis, who played the endearingly hapless Neville Longbottom starting with the very first Harry Potter movie. But it turns out that Lewis actually has a hard time watching his old performance from within the Wizading World.

Neville Longbottom is a supporting character throughout the Harry Potter books and novels, and ends up playing an important role in various conflicts. Matthew Lewis played him to pitch perfection, and went viral years later for his physical transformation and handsome adult looks. But Lewis is actually weirded out watching Harry Potter movies because of how much he identifies with his magical character. As he recently put it,

Keeping It In The Family

Although Lewis was quick to advise students in his hometown to chase their dreams regardless of where they came from, he had his own inspiration right on the doorstep. Older brother Anthony was a regular on popular Yorkshire soap opera Emmerdale and, as Lewis told Interview magazine, his initial inspiration to get into the business.

With Matthew still a toddler, he was taken along on jobs and soon got a taste for acting. “My mother had to chaperone … So I sort of grew up being around it and I just wanted to copy my brother and carry on,” he admitted. The younger Lewis began working at age 5, attending a local drama group/talent agency in Leeds and appearing in bit parts in Northern TV shows.

Meanwhile, their other older brother, Christopher, works as an editor. The three Lewis lads have never all worked together, though Anthony and Matthew both starred in 2012 BBC series The Syndicate.

Emma, Daniel and Rupert may have stormed the tabloids over the last decade as the main Potter trio, but theyre not the only long-serving key cast members.

As Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 arrives in cinemas, we sat down and chatted with Matt Lewis about the beginning of the end.

Neville receives a new wand in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince as the old one, which was actually his father’s, was broken during the struggle with Death Eaters in the previous book. During the train ride to Hogwarts, Neville is invited by Horace Slughorn to join the Slug Club, but apparently does not pass Slughorn’s first test as he is not invited again. It is revealed that Neville achieved an “Outstanding” in Herbology, and he did well in Defence Against the Dark Arts and Charms, earning an “Exceeds Expectations.” Neville wants the D.A. meetings to continue, as he feels they have helped him and the others to improve their skills, however they stop as Harry now says there is no need as they now have a “proper teacher”. When a group of Death Eaters guided by Draco Malfoy attack the castle, Neville answers the call for help, and he fights against the Death Eaters once again, though he suffers minor injuries. During Dumbledore’s funeral Neville is accompanied and assisted by Luna, and Harry felt a “great rush of affection” for them because they were the only two D.A. members that helped Ron, Hermione, and Ginny in the struggle with the Death Eaters.

Matthew Lewis Had A Busy 2020

2020 saw Matthew Lewis back on the big screen in a dramedy out of New Zealand, “Baby Done.” Starring alongside Kiwi comedian Rose Matafeo of “Funny Girls” and “The Breaker Upperers” fame Lewis plays a dad-to-be whose partner hastily draws up a pre-parenthood bucket list upon learning the couple are expecting. Produced by antipodean comedy legend Taika Waititi, the lovable film was celebrated by critics, who praised the pair’s easygoing onscreen chemistry .

Following “Baby Done,” Lewis has lately made headlines for his turn as Hugh Hulton on the Channel 5 series “All Creatures Great And Small.” Airing on PBS in the States, the period piece dramatizes James Herriot’s bestselling tales of his life as a veterinarian in 1930s Yorkshire. Lewis brings authenticity to the role hailing from that very part of the world himself but he’s admitted to feeling the pressure, too. “The original series is a bit of an institution in Yorkshire, and my dad really wanted me to do it,” he told the New York Times.

The proud Yorkshireman is keeping up the local connection offscreen too, launching a Leeds United football fan podcast with former LUFC striker Jermaine Beckford in 2020. He may live across the Atlantic in Florida these days, but Lewis clearly isn’t one to forget where he came from and as we can see, that’s a pretty long way.

Never underestimate the underdog.

Matthew Lewis, who played awkward but ultimately heroic Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter films, says he is incredibly flattered by the attention hes received for his striking transformation over the years.

It kind of leaves me at a loss for words, he told PEOPLE at the VIP and media preview for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter Diagon Alley at Universal Studios in Orlando last week. I dont know what to make of it.

The English actor, 24, admits that he has a tough time watching himself onscreen in the early Potter films.

I cringe, I really do, he says. I dont watch the films at all. Its like home movies. When your parents get your home movies out, no kid wants to watch that!

Still, he embraces his characters impact on fans.

To be able to portray that journey of underdog to hero was amazing, he says. If that inspires anyone who does poor at school, or isnt particularly as good at stuff as they should be if that helps people, thats the most amazing feeling ever.
