In Harry Potter: Page to Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey, according to Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid in the Harry Potter films, the character was modelled on a real biker. Coltrane said that J.K. Rowling told him that Hagrid was based on a Hell’s Angel she knew in the West Country. He was just huge and terrifying, Coltrane recalled Rowling telling him. And then he would sit down and talk about his garden and how his petunias had been very bad that year.

Robin Williams Really Wanted To Play The Role

We have no doubt that Robin Williams would have been able to do great things with the role of Hagrid. He actually made a call out to the filmmakers to express his interest, but thanks to J.K.’s British-only rule, the legendary actor was turned down. That being said, Robbie Coltrane did a fantastic job.

Hagrid is absent during the first part of the fifth novel. The character later reveals to Harry, Ron and Hermione that he and Madame Maxime travelled across Europe together on a mission from the Order, planning to find giants and convince them to ally themselves with the good side and with Dumbledore however, Death Eaters also found the giants and managed to get them to Voldemorts side. Hagrid is attacked by giants during the mission, and saved by Maxime. Hagrid and Maxime eventually part on the journey home because of Maximes exasperation with Grawp, Hagrids half-brother whom he had found and was attempting to bring home with them. Grawp, who wanted to stay with the giants, seriously injured Hagrid. Hagrid introduces his half-brother to Harry and Hermione, and asks them to take care of him after he leaves Hogwarts. High Inquisitor of Hogwarts Dolores Umbridge supervises the classes of all the members of the Hogwarts staff, including Hagrid’s, and she looks for an excuse to fire him, as Hagrid is close to Dumbledore and part giant, Umbridge being highly prejudiced against non-humans. Towards the end of the book, Umbridge and other Ministry officials attempt to arrest Hagrid. The latter manages to escape, but Professor McGonagall is injured whilst trying to defend him. Finally, with Dumbledores post as Headmaster restored, Hagrid returns to Hogwarts.

Harry Potter: 20 Things Everyone Gets Wrong About Hagrid ...

In the seventh novel, Hagrid is part of the Order of the Phoenix delegation assigned to remove Harry from the Dursleys’ home to the magic-protected Burrow. Hagrid takes Harry on the flying motorcycle he inherited from Sirius but the plan goes awry when the Order delegation is ambushed by Death Eaters. The pair narrowly make it to the Burrow after being attacked by Voldemort himself. After attending Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour‘s wedding reception, Hagrid does not appear again until near the end of the book when it is revealed he has been driven into hiding in the mountains by the new Death Eater regime at Hogwarts.

During the climactic battle, Hagrid attempts to come to the defence of Aragog’s carnivorous children, who have been driven out of the Forbidden Forest by the Death Eaters and are now attacking both Hogwarts defenders and Death Eaters indiscriminately, but he is carried off by a swarm of them. He later turns up, captive in the Death Eaters’ camp, when Harry sacrifices himself to Voldemort. Hagrid is forced to carry Harry back to the school, not realising that Harry has survived again, and en route accuses the watching Centaurs of not doing enough to help. The Centaurs soon afterward join the fray and Hagrid takes part in the second half of the battle, felling his main nemesis among the Death Eaters, the magical-creature executioner Walden Macnair.

Because Of His Hybrid Nature Hagrid Is Actually An Illegal Magical Creature

Considering what we know about magical law, Hagrid is actually considered an illegal abomination. It’s honestly a wonder he didn’t get hunted down by aurors and eliminated. We know that breeding different kinds of magical creatures is seriously frowned upon in the magical world, and this was revealed as a result of Hagrid’s own activities.

Remember when Hagrid successful created “Blast-ended Skrewts?” This little detail was cut from the movies, but it was a big part of the books. Hagrid actually bred a unique hybrid species of magical animal, and these were considered illegal by the Ministry Of Magic. According to this very definition, Hagrid himself is an illegal magical creature due to his half-giant heritage.

Jk Rowling Based His Character On A Real

Coltrane revealed how Rowling explained the man behind Hagrid’s inspiration, “He used to get off of his Harley and walk towards the bar. People would move like ants out of his way. He would grab his pint, find a seat and say: I dont know about you, but the petunias this year are very bad. He was a gardener but he had fists like hams. He had a gentle heart.”

Did Robbie Coltrane Wear A Wig In Harry Potter

For the role of Hagrid, Robbie Coltrane, by no means short at 6 ft.,1 in., wore special boots that made him at least seven inches taller. Hagrid Is Not Able To Summon A Bodily Patronus

Harry Potter 7 – Making of Hagrid

Given the fact of Hagrids proximity to fantastic creatures it will be a little surprising to learn that he is not able to summon a defender in the form of an animal. One day, J. Rowling was asked what Hagrids Patronus was. J. Rowling replied that since this spell is very complex, the forester did not know how to create a bodily Patronus. In addition, since Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts, there is a possibility that he did not even have the opportunity to master the art of summoning a Patronus.

We believe that Rowling created an unusually kind character, whom everyone loved. Hagrid-a real friend, direct, honest, naive. His faith in people and attitude to his work inspire.

Magical Abilities And Skills

Following his expulsion from Hogwarts, the Ministry of Magic broke Hagrids oak wand and forbade him to perform magic. Hagrid keeps the pieces of his wand in a pink umbrella, and performs small spells from time to time however, he was technically forbidden to do magic until the third book, and since he is not a fully qualified wizard, he “will always be a bit inept” as compared to other adult wizards, but “occasionally surprises everyone, himself included, by bringing off more impressive bits of magic”. However, he is unable to produce a Patronus. He also has magical abilities that stem from his giant blood. For example, in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, many of the stunning spells thrown at him by Ministry officials simply bounce off him. Also, being half-giant gives Hagrid some level of superhuman strength, which allowed him to bend the barrel of a shotgun with one hand.

He Wrestled Trolls In The Forbidden Forest As A Boy

While a single troll almost caused the entire school to be evacuated in The Philosopher’s Stone, Hagrid was perfectly fine wrestling them for fun as a boy. We learn this in the Chamber of Secrets, when Tom Riddle says: “...big, blundering Hagrid, in trouble every other week, trying to raise werewolf cubs under his bed, sneaking off to the Forbidden Forrest to wrestle trolls…

Did Hagrid really wrestle these hulking beasts for fun when he was just in his early teens?

Judging by what we’ve seen so far, it’s safe to assume that Hagrid really was doing things like this. When these stories, it almost makes us wish that Hagrid will get his own movie one day.

There Was A Rumor Of Him Having An Evil Twin

This has to be one of the strangest rumors about Hagrid. Around the time of The Sorcerer’s Stone, there were whispered rumors that Hagrid actually had an evil twin. Kids will be kids, but some fans believe that these rumors were actually true. Supposedly, this evil twin was named “Dirgah,” and he was lurking in the forbidden corridors.

Obviously, this was revealed to be false– or was it? Was there actually some truth to this after all? Is there really an evil version of Hagrid running around somewhere in the magical world? What we do know is that Hagrid’s family history is a little muddled at the best of times, so anything is possible.

He Can Resist Torment Much Longer Than Any Normal Man

Film Concert Series: SSV to perform

Hagrid is no stranger to the Death Eaters. His early interactions with Tom Riddle are some of the most interesting flashbacks in both the books and the movies, and he was also one of the first members of the Order of The Phoenix. This guy is a seasoned veteran of the Wizarding Wars, and he’s been in quite a few scraps over the years. The Death Eaters know him well, and they’ve been trying to take him down for years.

Luckily for Hagrid, his inherent magical resistance comes in very handy against Death Eaters. Curses just seem to bounce off him, and he resisted torment for longer than any other man when he was captured by the Death Eaters during the Battle of Hogwarts.

Hagrid Was Raised By His Dad

Everyone knows that Hagrid is half-giant, as thats a huge part of his character. However, many dont know a whole lot more about his early days. His childhood is mentioned in the books, but largely skimmed over in the movies. Hagrids father is not named, but is described as a wizard who is short by even human standards. He married Fridwulfa, a giantess, but she left when Hagrid was around three, and it was Hagrids father who raised him.

His small stature and Hagrids huge size made the son significantly larger than the father. Speaking to Madame Maxime, Hagrid says Tiny little bloke, my dad was. By the time I was six I could lift him up an’ put him on top o’ the dresser if he annoyed me. The two were very close, and Hagrid speaks fondly of his dad, although the wizard died in 1940. Though this meant that Hagrid was effectively orphaned at a very young age, he is happy that his father was not around to see him disgraced and expelled.

Believe It Or Not Hagrid Was Made Much Smaller For The Movies

Obviously, Hagrid is huge even in the films. However, when going back and reading his initial description in the books, it’s clear that he was shrunken down considerably to fit the movie screens. In the words of J.K. Rowling, Hagrid had “hands the size of trash can lids.” His height is also noted at 11 1/2 feet tall.

No matter what kind of crazy theories fans come up with, it’s not even remotely logical. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Robbie Coltrane, who plays Hagrid in the movies, was in his 50s for most of the filming of Harry Potter. Because of this, many viewers imagine Hagrid to be around that age. It makes sense visually, but the character is actually far older than the actor as are most of the Hogwarts professors.

In Rowlings universe, witches and wizards age more slowly than muggles, and live far longer. . For example, Dumbledore is well over 100, yet the actor who played him for the final films was only in his sixties during filming. Hagrid, meanwhile, was officially born in 1928 putting him in his 60s when Harry first met him, rather than his early 50s. This also puts him in a prime position to appear in the new films, which have been revealed to cover up until 1946.

Voldemort and his Death Eaters in the Forbidden Forest

As Hagrid was a member of the Order of the Phoenix, he disliked the Death Eaters and tried to thwart their plans most of the time. The Death Eaters whom Hagrid knew the most were Severus Snape, Lucius Malfoy and his son Draco, clashing with Lucius before he was put in Azkaban, and had clashes with Draco while he taught Care of Magical Creatures.

Snape, on the other hand, defected from Voldemort, and Hagrid defended him whenever Harry, Ron and Hermione criticised him, except when he temporarily believed that Snape had betrayed Dumbledore at the Astronomy Tower.
