Why Was Jk Rowling Canceled

In June 2020, Rowling came under fire after posting a transphobic tweet in response to an article about menstruation. The Harry Potter author took issue with the trans-inclusive language of the article, titled, Opinion: Creating a more equal post-COVID-19 world for people who menstruate. She wrote, Im sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out, Rowling tweeted, referencing women. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?

Shortly after sharing the tweet, Rowling faced immense backlash from social media users who attempted to educate her on why the use of phrases such as people who menstruate is ideal, as it includes trans men and non-binary individuals who menstruate, among others. Other social media users noted that menstruation and being a woman, as Rowling suggests, are not mutually exclusive experiences as there are many people assigned female at birth who have had hysterectomies, entered menopause or no longer menstruate due to other hormonal imbalances.

In a statement with theTrevor Project, Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter in the Harry Potter movies, criticized the author for her comments about the transgender community. I realize that certain press outlets will probably want to paint this as in-fighting between J.K. Rowling and myself, he said in his statement. But that is really not what this is about, nor is it whats important right now.

They also quote the main characteristics of these rare first editions as having “a print line that reads 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 and the crediting of ‘Joanne Rowling,’ not JK.” Prices on there range from $40,000 to $55,000, while a small amount of advance proof copies are on the market from $7,500 to $13,500.

    Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opened in first place on the international chart with $143.3 million in 63 markets. The film had the biggest opening of the Harry Potter franchise in 16 of those 63 markets, but ironically not in the U.K., where it had its biggest opening. The film debuted in first place there with $18.90 million in 666 theaters. This is the third best in the franchise behind the two DeathlyHallows films.     In anticipation of the latest film in the Harry Potter franchise, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” the full lineup of Harry Potter will be returning to theaters for a week beginning on Thursday.

    Time Warner is looking to further cash in on an eight-film franchise that has already earned more than $7 billion in box office revenue since 2001. Scholastic, which sold more than 160 million copies of the seven Harry Potter novels in the U.S., also published the screenplay for the film. At $24.99 for the hardcover, that adds to the nearly $8 billion in book sales that have already been wrung out of the series.

    As in the Star Wars franchise, the value of toy sales shouldn’t be underestimated. Hasbro and especially Mattel have both made money on Potter games and toys, and total sales so far are estimated at over $7 billion. All told, the total value of the franchise so far has been around $25 billion.

    NBCUniversal acquired the rights to the Harry Potter movies, including the “Fantastic Beasts” movies, for a seven-year TV deal beginning in 2018. Those rights are currently held by Walt Disney Co. That deal is valued at $200 million, according to Bloomberg.

    Lest it seems like the Harry Potter gravy train may be slowing, fear not! The 224-page “Fantastic Beasts” screenplay is expected to be made into its own trilogy.

While there are no other wide releases, there are a few films opening or expanding semi-wide. Of these, The Edge of Seventeen is the only one with a realistic shot at the top five. It is earning the best reviews of the week and did earn a lot of film festival buzz, so that should help. Billy Lynns Long Halftime Walk had an amazing opening in limited release last weekend, but it will likely struggle as it expands into just over 1,000 theaters this weekend. Finally theres Bleed for This, which is expected to barely make the top ten. This weekend last year, the final installment of the Hunger Games franchise opened with just over $100 million.
