Godric’s Hollow House In Lavenham
We paid a visit to Harry Potter’s childhood home
We are very lucky to live in a beautiful, picturesque part of the world, with gorgeous countryside and quaint villages on our doorstep.
But one Suffolk village is home to an iconic building which draws fans from all over the world.
The De Vere House on Water Street in Lavenham may look like just one of the many Tudor houses in the village – with its ornately carved entranceway and imposing frame – but this one has a much more *magical* past.
The De Vere House was used as parts of Godric’s Hollow in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One.
During the filming of Harry Potter, different parts of the house were cut and pasted to make up the whole of Godric’s Hollow, with winter snow being added later with special effects.
The house draws huge numbers of tourists, with reports that some even rock up in a taxi and knock on the door to ask if Harry is home.
Now, the owners are trying to sell the property, which is also a guesthouse which has been listed on Airbnb.
The 15th century, six-bedroom house is the location of the Potters family home provided the backdrop for the terrifying scene where the Voldemort murders Harry’s parents, James and Lily Potter.
The ruined house was then left as a monument to the Potters after Voldemort failed to kill Harry, making him famous as the only wizard in history to have survived the killing curse.
Inspiration And Mothers Death
Rowling worked as a researcher and bilingual secretary in London for Amnesty International, then moved with her boyfriend to Manchester where she worked at the Chamber of Commerce. In 1990, she was on a four-hour delayed train trip from Manchester to London when the idea came fully formed into her mind for a story of a young boy attending a school of wizardry. When she reached her Clapham Junction flat, she began to write immediately.
In December 1990, Rowlings mother Anne died after ten years suffering from multiple sclerosis. Rowling was writing Harry Potter at the time and had never told her mother about it. Her mothers death heavily affected Rowlings writing, and she channelled her own feelings of loss by writing about Harrys grief in greater detail in the first book.
