Death Eaters And Enemies

The Second Albus Dumbledore | Creating the World Harry Potter | part 5

Bellatrix Lestrange, a notorious Death Eater

Bellatrix Lestrange was a Death Eater who fought in both Wizarding Wars. She was fanatically loyal to Lord Voldemort and so, although acknowledging Dumbledore as a very powerful wizard, considered her master as the superior being. Bellatrix was among the few people who knew of the plan to assassinate Dumbledore, and that Draco Malfoy had been assigned the task of murdering him. She participated in the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, and reacted to Dumbledore’s death with utter glee. Bellatrix did not live to discover that her initial suspicions of Snape’s loyalty had been correct, dying during a ferocious duel with Molly Weasley. Dumbledore recognised Bellatrix as an incredibly dangerous and sadistic Death Eater, commenting to Severus Snape that, given the choice, he would prefer to die a quick and clean death rather than fall prey to Bellatrix who tended to “play with her food”.

Bellatrix also killed many of Dumbledore’s friends, such as Sirius Black, Dobby the house-elf, and Nymphadora Tonks.

The book introduces his parents, Percival and Kendra Dumbledore, as well as his little sister, Ariana his brother, Aberforth Dumbledore, was mentioned in previous books. At six years old, Ariana was attacked by three Muggle boys who had witnessed her performing magic. Because of this attack, Ariana was seriously traumatised and never able to control her magic again. Enraged, Percival attacked the Muggle boys , and was given a life sentence in Azkaban. After this, Kendra moved her family to the village of Godric’s Hollow. Decades later, in 1945, Dumbledore finally defeated the now-Dark wizard Grindelwald, who had come to possess the Elder Wand. Grindelwald’s defeat made Dumbledore the master of the Elder Wand, which remained his until just before his death, when Draco used the Disarming Charm on him.

Dumbledore had another Hallow in his keeping since the death of James Potter: the Invisibility Cloak, which he had borrowed to examine. When James died, Dumbledore kept the cloak and decided to pass it on to Harry, James’ son.

‘harry Potter’ Director Reveals Peter O’toole Turned Down Being The New Dumbledore Because He ‘didn’t Feel It Was Right’ To Step Into Richard Harris’ Shoes

13 famous actors who were nearly cast in major
  • Chris Columbus told Insider he had “long” conversations with Peter O’Toole for the Dumbledore recast.

  • Richard Harris played the Hogwarts headmaster in the first two films before dying of cancer in 2002.

  • O’Toole ultimately turned down the role because “he was best friends with Harris,” Columbus said.

“Harry Potter” director Chris Columbus revealed that he had “long” conversations with actor Peter O’Toole about taking over the role of Dumbledore after Richard Harris died. But O’Toole ultimately decided against it because of his close friendship with Harris, according to Columbus.

Harris, who died at 72 in 2002 of complications from cancer, played the imposing but beloved Hogwarts headmaster in the first two films in the franchise. After his death, Michael Gambon replaced him in the role.

In an interview with Insider in October, Columbus called Harris’ death “a devastating loss” for the franchise. He explained that Harris was his first choice to play Dumbledore and he “couldn’t imagine anyone else” in the role.

“I remember a meeting with several British actors, particularly Peter O’Toole who came in and discussed it for a long time,” Columbus said about the process of recasting Dumbledore. The director explained that O’Toole “eventually decided, because he was best friends with Richard, that he didn’t feel it was right to step into those shoes.”

“He got sick and passed away pretty quickly,” he told THR about Harris.

Richard Harris: Brings The Kindness That Dumbledore Needs

Albus Dumbledore may be one of the most powerful and skilled wizards who has ever lived, but he is also the headmaster of a school. It’s a well-known fact that Dumbledore is all-powerful, but Richard Harris’s demeanor makes Dumbledore look like someone who wouldn’t hurt a fly.

He seems like the kind of person who children would meet and have full trust and faith in right off the bat, which works very well for the character, especially in the first two films when Harry is so young.

Richard Harris: He Makes Dumbledore Feel Timeless

One of the brilliant things about Richard Harris is that his version of Dumbledore almost feels removed from reality. He looks perfect in his role as the wizened wizard, and if you told anyone that he was a hundred years old, or even a thousand years old, it wouldn’t be hard to believe.

Dumbledore is a real man but he is also a legend, and Richard Harris’s Dumbledore really looks like the kind of legendary character who separates himself from the crowd and cements his legacy as one of the most exceptional wizards in history.

Harry Potter: Sir Ian McKellen reveals why he turned down Dumbledore role – BBC News

The original Order of the Phoenix

Although he had a good relationship with some members of the Order of the Phoenix, Aberforth was described as a “strange bloke” by Alastor Moody. He also fought in the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998. Aberforth seemed to know Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks and Fred and George Weasley. He saw Lupin fighting with Antonin Dolohov and he told Tonks so. He met many allies of the Order during the Battle of Hogwarts, when many people were getting into Hogwarts through a portrait-hole in a room of his pub.

Aberforth had a mixed relationship with Mundungus Fletcher. While Aberforth banned Mundungus for life from the bar for offending him, the two remained in touch, with Mundungus selling stolen goods to Aberforth.

He did not seem to have a very high opinion of Elphias Doge for his hero worshipping Albus both as students and later in life.

Richard Harris: Someone Harry Can Talk To

Even if he is all-knowing, Dumbledore seems much more caring and personable in the first two films. He handles baby Harry with care as he leaves him to the Dursleys, even if the deed itself is somewhat careless. When Harry reaches school age, Dumbledore watches over him with a careful gaze, but he’s approachable.

Harry has a friendly conversation with him on several occasions he isn’t as distant and mysterious as Gambon’s Dumbledore. This makes him feel more like a mentor than an enigma, and someone who really cares about Harry, whereas Gambon’s Dumbledore makes Harry nervous. The two characters grow distant and their relationship feels less warm than it used to. In fact, Harry doesn’t even trust him by the fifth film.

Hog’s Head Inn Barman

The Second Albus Dumbledore

The original Order that Aberforth was a member of

At some point, Aberforth became the barman of the Hog’s Head Inn in Hogsmeade village. When Tom Riddle returned to Hogwarts to apply for the Defence Against the Dark Arts post, Albus revealed that one of ‘the local barmen’, presumably Aberforth himself, told him about Riddle’s followers awaiting him in the Hog’s Head. Later, when the First Wizarding War broke out, Aberforth joined the Order of the Phoenix, opposing Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters.

First Wizarding War

Sometime around 1975, Mundungus Fletcher was banned from Hog’s Head for life. Sirius Black later noted that Aberforth had ‘a good memory’ for whom he had thrown out of his tavern.

In 1980, Albus visited the Hog’s Head to interview Sybill Trelawney for the position of Divination professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Severus Snape, then a Death Eater, overheard part of Trelawney’s prophecy about Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort. Snape was unable to hear its entirety, however, as Aberforth caught him eavesdropping and threw him out.

Between the wars

Aberforth as the barman for the Hog’s Head between the wars

During the 19881989 school year, Jacob’s sibling visited Hog’s Head Inn to ask about Mundungus Fletcher. Aberforth expressed his hatred towards Fletcher but didn’t give them his whereabouts. He then presented them a letter from Albus, which was said to be given to them should they appear in Hog’s Head looking lost.
