Weirdest Things That Became Harry Potter Canon Thanks To ‘the Cursed Child’

Is “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” Canon?

All of the weirdest things that Rowling’s The Cursed Child made part of the Harry Potter wizarding world canon, including Voldemort’s SON.

Ive been in the Harry Potter;fandom for a long time. I started reading the books when I was seven and Im now well, old. That means I was around when Harry Potter And The Cursed Child;was first announced. Originally, there was a rumor that it was going to be about Harrys days with the Dursleys, which I was excited for. Then it was announced it would take place after the epilogue, and I was a bit more wary, but still excited.

Ive since read the script and I, erkind of wish it wasnt a thing and Id been left to my own devices and headcanons. Listen. I am or was a diehard Potter fan, but I would kind of like to pretend this doesnt exist. Theres just too much to wrap my head around.

Are These Works Canonical

There have always been debates about the works of certain authors. ;J. R. R. Tolkien, for example,;has tons of published material now, most of which his son Christopher released after his death. There are different versions of different stories. Which one is canon? ;Are the versions Tolkien himself published canonical and the rest simply drafts? ;What if he had published one story, then rewrote it, but never published the later version? ;Which is canon?

And what about Star Wars? ;When The Force Awakens opened, we learned the book content was no longer considered canon. ;So what are the books if not canon? ;How can something be canon and then rewritten?

And what about contradictions in an authors own published material?; Sir Arthur Conan Doyle once called John Watson James apparently by accident. So is that story, by the logic of Slughorns Trophy Wife, no longer canon because it contradicted previously established information? ;Alexandre Dumas seems to have shaky characterization in some of his storiestheyre so long he probably forgot what happened himself. Is The Three Musketeers no longer canon because DArtagnan changes from installment to installment?

That Nagini Used To Be A Human Woman

This is another huge change that came from Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and this change was not met with a lot of positive support. The fact that Nagini actually used to be a human woman cause controversy. Many fans pointed out that this plot had many hugely problematic aspects. Many people were rightfully disturbed by this change and felt it was completely unnecessary, especially given the fact that Voldemort used Naginis milk to survive while he was at his weakest points.

Harry Told Albus He Wishes He Wasnt His Son

Harry was born to loving parents but before he could even begin to form memories, he had to go and live with the Dursleys. With them, he was neglected and abused, and he grew up knowing exactly what it was to feel unloved. He grew up knowing what bad parenting was. So even in a snap moment, why would he say something like this?

A temper isnt a good reasonHarry knows better than that. Ive been in some pretty heated parents with my fight too and theyve never once said they wished I wasnt their child. A real ouch moment.

Inspiration And Mother’s Death

Did JK Rowling Write the Cursed Child? Is It CANON ...

Rowling worked as a researcher and bilingual secretary in London for , then moved with her boyfriend to Manchester where she worked at the Chamber of Commerce. In 1990, she was on a four-hour delayed train trip from Manchester to London when the idea “came fully formed” into her mind for a story of a young boy attending a school of wizardry. When she reached her flat, she began to write immediately.

In December 1990, Rowling’s mother Anne died after ten years suffering from . Rowling was writing Harry Potter at the time and had never told her mother about it. Her mother’s death heavily affected Rowling’s writing, and she channelled her own feelings of loss by writing about Harry’s grief in greater detail in the first book.

So What Problems Does The Cursed Child Create **spoilers Below***

Well, first off, the story was thought of by Rowling and two others, but is written by Jack Thorne. And there end up being a lot of problems when it comes to what happens in the book.

For example, how did Voldemort end up having a child? I mean, it’s pretty cool and all, and you don’t need to know how to love in order to have sex, but Voldemort just doesn’t seem like someone who would ever want a child for ANY reason.

Think about it: Voldemort wouldn’t want an heir, he wouldn’t want a companion, and it sure as hell wasn’t a one-night stand with Bellatrix.

Which raises the question, do abortions exist in the wizarding world? I mean, if a witch was pregnant and she didn’t want the baby, would she have to go to St. Mungo’s to get an abortion or is there a spell? Are there some pro-life conservatives and pro-choice liberals in the wizarding world too?

Sorry, I just couldn’t get that thought out of my head and needed to share it.

Regardless of the stupidity and confusion behind the idea, I liked the plot twist, though.

Also, in this play, Ron is reduced to an incompetent character of comic relief. He doesn’t show too much real competence in this play, and is pretty much there as a joke character who is always eating.

Don’t get me wrong, Ron is good as comic relief, but it doesn’t make sense for his character to resemble his character in the films rather than the books, which are actually canon.

And we have the Polyjuice problem as well.

Our next problem?

Recent Changes Jk Rowling Has Made To Harry Potter Canon

J.K. Rowling can’t seem to leave the Harry Potter world alone, making continuous changes to the canon as we know it. Here are the most recent.

The fact that J.K. Rowling keeps changing Harry Potter;canon after the fact has become somewhat of a running joke on the internet. Whether its new canon in the Fantastic Beasts;films, facts on Pottermore, or random things being revealed by Rowling herself on Twitter, it seems hard to escape these new canon facts.

Even for some of the most diehard Potter fans, the continual addition of new information, some of which changes what was already established as canon, can feel frustrating. Some people feel it would be better if J.K. Rowling let her work stand on its own for a while instead of continually adding to the lore, while others enjoy learning more about the world and their favorite characters. Many of her changes have caused controversy, too, as people feel she is trying to add diversity to her stories that wasnt really there.

Here is a list of eight of the more recent changes J.K. Rowling has made to Harry Potter canon.

There Was A Rumor Scorpius Was The Son Of Lord Voldemort

Scorpius was described as looking like Draco, so Im not sure why this rumor was a thing, but there we have itit is canon that people genuinely believed Scorpius was the son of Lord Voldemort. The rumor alone seems like a reach to me. Scorpius has pretty clear Malfoy features and even if these had been magically altered why would Draco, of all peoplewho switched sides in the war eventuallybe raising Voldemorts son?

Of course, this wasnt true, but even there being so much as a rumor seemed pretty baseless. I mean, how nuts would it for Voldemort to have a kid?! Oh wait… ;;

Draco Malfoy Would Have Become A Monster Had Voldemort Won

If Voldemort had won the war, apparently Draco Malfoy failing in his mission to kill Dumbledore and trying to switch sides wouldnt have mattered, because he became an awful Ministry official who would encourage attacks on Muggles.

Errrr. What?

Listen. I know Draco Malfoy could be a jerk. I know he wasnt a particularly nice person in school. But it was pretty firmly clarified in the books that he wasnt evil, just spoiled and extremely misguided. It seems weird that circumstances could have pushed him to this.

If I knew there was this version of Draco that could have existed, I would have punched him if I were told this as Harry after I stuck up for him so much.

Wizards Didnt Use To Have Toilets

This is a weird and random change that had many fans saying what? This bit of canon has gone done as one of the most notorious and laughable. Released as a Pottermore exclusive, Rowling revealed that wizards didnt use plumbing until the 18th century. Before using plumbing they would just go to the bathroom wherever they were sitting or standing and then use magic to get rid of the refuse. This fact seemed completely unnecessary to know and also made wizards and witches look somewhat backward.

Many fans felt like this was the prime example of Rowling feeling the need to keep meddling in the HP canon even when there was no good reason for the information.

One of the most out there changes from this screenplay was the addition of Delphini, the daughter of Voldemort and Bellatrix Lestrange. This detail was one that many people scoffed at. How Voldemorts Daughter Fits Into Harry Potter Canon

Voldemort’s daughter, Delphini, was Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’s biggest surprise. Here’s how the character fits into Harry Potter canon.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child unearthed many revelations but none were as shocking as the introduction of Lord Voldemort‘s daughter, Delphini. The young Dark witch, nicknamed Delphi, was the product of Voldemort’s romantic relationship with Bellatrix Lestrange. Here’s how Voldemort’s only known spawn fits into Harry Potter canon.

Delphi made her franchise debut in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the two-part play that debuted on London’s West End in 2016, with the script later being;published for readers worldwide. The witch pretended to be the niece and caretaker of;Amos Diggory, the father of Cedric. Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy then teamed with Delphi to steal a;Time-Turner to bring back Cedric. Delphi had ulterior motives and put the young wizards in great danger. Dumbledore And Grindelwald Got It On

The most recent addition to the Harry Potter canon made headlines and has caused quite a stir. Everything surrounding Dumbledores sexuality has been revealed after the books were released, something that many fans are frustrated about. Fans feel adding in LGBTQ+ representation after the books and films have been written doesnt really count, especially given that Dumbledores sexuality still hasnt been explicitly touched on in either Fantastic Beasts film.

To add fuel to the fire, Rowling recently said that Dumbledore and Grindelwald had a sexual dimension to their relationship and that their relationship was intense and passionate. Many fans felt this reveal was once again an attempt by Rowling to seem inclusive without ever actually including representation in a meaningful way.

What Is Canon Harry Potter And The Cursed Child

Why Harry Potter and the cursed child is Garbage and not canon? Take on curse child in Hindi

by Bluesqueakpip

Is it a book? Is it a play? Is it even canon?

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a new play by the BAFTA winning writer Jack Thorne, with JK Rowling credited as co-writer on the story. The play has been praised as thrilling, ground-breaking and a triumph.

But the script has received mixed reviews from fans.

Can the fans define canon? Or is that privilege restricted to the author? Is it still canon when an author licenses another author to write a story set in their world? Does it make a difference if the original author is overseeing the new story? Is a story only canon when its in the original genre do only Harry Potter novels count, rather than the play or the films?

This is a discussion blog about the nature of canon and, inevitably, discussion involves SPOILERS. However, if you havent read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, feel free to use examples from Doctor Who. This is, after all, a Doctor Who site.

Which Means He Was Lovers With Bellatrix Lestrange

I cant. I just cant.

Lord Voldemort was painted as being heartless. He wasnt capable of love. The circumstances of his birth were so tragic that he wasnt capable of being a normal human and loving like a normal human would. I get that Bellatrix was pretty enamored with him, because she was obvious about it despite being married to someone else, but why did he entertain it? Even if he didnt love her, he doesnt seem the type to mess around with her either let alone risk having a baby with her.

Yeah. This whole thing was a bit much for me. Sorry Delphi, not buying it.

But What About All These Tweets And Pottermore Posts Are They Canon

So the body of work of an author is, by definition, canon whether or not readers like it or agree with it. ;But what is the body of work? ;Slughorns Trophy Wife mentions theme park rides and video games while Emily at Rose Read explores all other bits of information Rowling has given us through the years from interviews to Tweets to Pottermore.

Here I do not consider things like video games and theme park rides to be canon. ;Giving other people rights to your work so they can sell stuff does not mean you are giving them artistic authority. However, I do not see why an author providing material in forms other than traditional publication makes their work less valid. ;Why should Rowlings writings on Pottermore be taken less seriously than they would have been if she had published them in an encyclopedia format as was first suggested? Why should her words hold less weight on Twitter than they would if she bound them in paper and sold them at a bookstore?
