Who Are The Marauders In Harry Potter

Don't Miss

Each Marauders Animagus Form Reflects Their Personality

The Marauders – A Harry Potter Fan Film

One of the most memorable aspects of the Marauders friendship is that James, Sirius, and Peter chose to become Animagi that is, wizards that can transform into animals at will to keep their lycanthropic friend, Remus, company during his time of the month. In typically clever-if-slightly-obvious J.K. Rowling fashion, each of the animals they end up turning into reflect their respective personalities in more ways than one.

Sure, Lupins werewolf form means that hes more likely to eat people alive. Wolves are also often symbols of guardianship and familial loyalty, and those are traits that he exhibited both in his relationship to his fellow Marauders, and in his mentoring of Harry. Sirius, likewise, was firmly loyal, courageous, vigilant, and faithful, just like a dog. James was a stag, which is frequently a symbol of royalty or leadership. That makes perfect sense, since Harrys dad was apparently the de facto leader of his friends. On the other hand, a rat is a symbol of uncleanliness and impurity, and Peter did, after all, literally rat his friends out to Voldemort.

In retrospect, the rodent he turned into should have probably tipped his friends off that he was maybe not such a great guy.

Harry Potter Tv Series Reportedly In Development At Hbo

Each one of those characters proves to be crucial to Harrys development in the canonical series on both page and screen, yet fans are left to piece together brief mentions of their youthful escapades to construct their own version of a Marauders timeline.

Wands at the ready! Below, why a Marauders prequel would work.

Harry Potter: The Marauders & How They Got Their Names Explained

The Marauders were a well-known group of Gryffindor students in Harry Potter. So what were they known for and how did they get that Animagus names?

Who were the Marauders in Harry Potter and how did the group get their name? The notorious group consisted of James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew. The Marauders were known;for being troublemakers but as they got older, the group had a bigger purpose.

James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter founded the Marauders in 1971 during their time at Hogwarts, long before the events of Harry Potter. The four students were all Gryffindors and had a passion for breaking the rules. They built a strong friendship during their time at school, especially when Remus struggled with his werewolf transformations. Each month during his transformation as a werewolf, his three friends would use their;Animagus form to control Remus.

The Marauders secretly explored the school grounds and nearby areas during their nighttime adventures. They also took on new names during their Animagi transformations. James turned into a red stag and was known as Prongs, while Sirius became Padfoot, a shaggy black dog. James and Sirius were large enough to control Remus, a.k.a Moony, during his werewolf form. Harry Potter: 15 Things You Didn’t Know About The Marauders

We solemnly swear that at least a few of these facts about Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs flew under the radar.

When it comes to the friendships in Harry Potter, the relationship between the titular hero and his BFFs, Ron and Hermione, will likely always be most popular for fans. That doesnt mean others havent had Potterheads talking over the years, though. In particular, the friendship between James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew has been a huge source of inspiration in the fandom. Theyre sometimes known as the Marauders, and each member of this foursome played a vitally important role in the Harry Potter series, even though most of them had pretty limited time on screen.

Fans have long obsessed over the minimal details weve gleaned about their time at Hogwarts from the books and films, but sadly, we just dont have all that much to go on. The tidbits we do have about their lives just make us want to know more about the brave, reckless and ultimately tragic cohorts that solemnly swore they were up to no good. Here are 15 Things You Didnt Know About the Marauders.

Sirius Black Wasnt Meant To Be A Hero

Harry Potter: 15 Things You Didn

The first time we see Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, he looks like hes stark raving mad. Thats because our heros godfather is gaunt, disheveled, and issuing a silent, terrifying scream from behind the moving image on the front page of The Daily Prophet. Throughout the film, we learn that he wasnt responsible for turning Harrys parents over to Voldemort, and that in fact he was more or less framed for his role in their murder by fellow Marauder, Peter Pettigrew. His false imprisoned was the driving force behind the rage he displays when we first meet him.

Throughout the next two films, Harry builds a relationship with Sirius, learns more about what his dad was like at his age, and is encouraged to join the growing resistance against the Death Eaters. Still, despite the somewhat positive influence he had on Harrys life, J.K. Rowling has remarked that he still had plenty of issues to work through.

Shes commented at length about his role in Harrys life, and the fact that he didnt always do the best job of following his own advice. Shes called him out for his hypocrisy over the way he treated Severus Snape and his family house elf, Kreacher. Shes also insinuated that he was unbalanced due to his extended stay in Azkaban. None of this means that Rowling believed Sirius to be bad more than anything, he was meant to show that adults dont always have all the answers.

Voldemort’s Rise To Power

One Harry Potter fan suggested that the series should look at Voldemort’s first rise to power, which is a time largely unexplored in the films and the;Fantastic Beasts;series. They wrote: “The most likely option as it contains characters general audiences are aware of. It would be exciting to see scenes from the books, . But I’d rather watch a show that had an ending I didn’t know.”;

Could the show look at Voldemort’s rise to power?

Cat Rat And Dog An Unexpected Reunion

Shocking truths were revealed and important events were set in motion one night at the Shrieking Shack. Sirius had escaped Azkaban after spotting Scabbers in the Daily Prophet. Meanwhile Remus had been made Professor Lupin and was teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts to Jamess teenage son. Peter realised his number was up at Hogwarts with one old friend resident as a teacher, another an escaped convict and a suspicious ginger moggy on his tail. Once again, he faked his own death and he almost got away with it.

Harrys friends, the Marauders and even Severus Snape all wound up at the Shrieking Shack where the truth finally emerged. Jamess presence was also felt in the form of his sons Patronus. In Dumbledores words the following day, Prongs rode again last night.

Unfortunately, this took place during a full moon. Before Siriuss name could be cleared Remus transformed and Peter escaped in the ensuing chaos. Afterwards Peter returned to his master, Remus resigned and Sirius went on the run with a fellow fugitive a Hippogriff named Buckbeak. He always did like to travel in style.

Pointed Out By Alexis Nedd On Twitter Its Surprising That Nowhere In The Harry Potter Series Do They Explain Who The Marauders Are Meaning Thatharry Thinks Theyre Random People

Color me shocked when I realized that in the;Harry Potter;films, they dont explain who the Marauders are. When a tweet went viral with fans pointing out the thing that makes them mad about the movies, Alexis Nedd pointed out that they dont explain who Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs are.

To be clear, look to Alexis Nedds tweet.

At no point in the films do they explain who Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs are so as far as Film Harry knows, four complete randos drew the Marauders Map and Lupin just thought it was neat.

alexis nedd

Okay so now that shes pointed it out, its weird, right? We have to sit and look at the idea of the Marauders and know that there is an entire generation of kids who didnt read the books who think that Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs are just random people? Do they not understand that Harrys own father made the map?

If not for the map itself, it is upsetting that they also dont know these fun nicknames for Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, Sirius Black, and James Potter. There is something so strange about thinking of the world of the;Harry Potter;series without the context given to us in the books that Ill never understand.

I read the books as a kid so, for me, I have all this knowledge going into the movies and it would have to be interesting to explore the moves with someone who has no idea what information theyre missing from the series.

Fred Weasley regarding the Marauder’s Map

Fred and George give Harry Potter the Marauder’s Map

Fred and George Weasley stole the map from Filch’s office in their first year at Hogwarts. They had been taken to his office for letting off a Dungbomb and saw a drawer marked “Confiscated and Highly Dangerous“. George dropped another Dungbomb, while Fred stole the map from the drawer. They had to experiment with it in order to learn how to get it to work, but it gave them clues, “flickering into life here and there” when they came close to the activating phrase, until finally they got it exactly. Because of this map, the twins memorised the secret passageways of Hogwarts, which they used for quite a few of their many pranks.

In Harry Potter‘s third year at Hogwarts Fred and George gave him the map. It was a mark of their high esteem for Harry, and their belief that he stood in need of assistance with a destiny none of them yet fully understood, that they later gifted the map to him, unwittingly passing it on to the child of one of the creators.

Locating The Cursed Vault

At some point by 1988, the map was stolen from Filch’s office. The thief left a mess in the office.

In the 19871988 school year, Patricia Rakepick looked for the map in Filch’s office, but noticed that it was no longer there. She asked Rosmerta if Jacob had left the map in the Three Broomsticks Inn, and Rosmerta responded that she did not know what Rakepick was talking about.

In the 19881989 school year, when coming up with a plan to locate the fourth Cursed Vault, Merula Snyde told Jacob’s sibling to get the Marauder’s Map. In order to find out where the map was, Jacob’s sibling gave Filch a cake, which put him in a good enough mood to reveal that the map had been stolen from his office and he suspected the thief to be Peeves. With this information, Jacob’s sibling and Jae Kim went to talk to Peeves. Peeves refused to reveal the location of the map, as a friend of his who hated Jacob and potions had told him not to help Jacob’s sibling.

The map had, at some point by late 1988, ended up in the possession of Mundungus Fletcher. The map was later stolen from him, and he did not know who the attacker was.

Jacob’s sibling and Jae Kim found the Marauder’s Map in the Icy Corridor along with Scabbers. Jacob’s sibling did not think much of the parchment, but took it to Patricia Rakepick. She knew what the Marauder’s Map was.

The map was returned to Filch’s office at some point later that school year or in the following school year.

Harry Potter: How The Marauder’s Map Actually Works

The Marauder’s Map is one of the most popular objects from the Harry Potter universe, but how exactly does it work? Let’s take a look.

The Harry Potter saga introduced the audience to a number of magical objects, places, and charms, and one of the most memorable objects is the Marauders Map but how exactly does it work? The fantasy genre has seen various universes with their own mythologies, and one of the most popular and beloved ones is that of the Wizarding World from the Harry Potter books and movies. It all began in 1997 with J.K. Rowlings debut novel Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, the first entry in a series of seven books chronicling the story of the boy who lived and Lord Voldemort, the darkest wizard of all.

Through seven novels, readers got to know the Wizarding World fairly well, learning about the most important events in its history, its most notable wizards and witches , and some of its most fascinating charms and objects, of which many made it to the movie saga. One of, if not the most popular object in the Harry Potter universe is the Marauders Map, introduced in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban when Harry couldnt join the rest on their trip to Hogsmeade, so Fred and George Weasley, who were in possession of the map, gave it to him so he could use one of Hogwarts secret passages that would lead him to Hogsmeade.

Exploring Hogwarts In A Different Era

With a silhouette that is instantly recognizable among millions, nothing beats the magic of Hogwarts. A Marauders prequel would not only allow for the return to this beloved school but also a further exploration of its vast mysteries intermixed with traditional locations that fans know and love, such as the Great Hall and the Gryffindor common room.

In the 70s, Hogwarts was one of the only safe havens for British wizards during the First Wizarding War, in part due to Albus Dumbledores new position as Headmaster. A prequel series would grant the opportunity for fans to gain a glimpse of the famed characters early days in the role.

The Marauders Map Doesnt Actually Show Everything In Hogwarts

When the Weasleys handed over the Marauder’s Map to Harry in his third year, they told him that it gave him an eagle eye of everything in Hogwarts. In Fred and Georges eyes, it catalogued every room, every staircase, every hidden passage that the castle had inside and around its hallowed walls. Unfortunately, over time, the incompleteness of the map became evident.

There are a few key parts of the castle that seem to be hidden from view on the map. One is the Room of Requirement, which is more or less a moving target and would admittedly be hard to plot. Another is the Chamber of Secrets, which was merely a rumor when James, Sirius, Peter, and Remus first created in the map in the 1970s. In other words, the map more works as a documentation of all of the hidden areas of the castle that the Marauders found, but wasnt quite magical enough to account for those that flew under their radar.

Harry Potter: What An Hbo Max Tv Series Could Be About

The storytelling options within the Wizarding World of Harry Potter are endless. Here are just a few that the rumored HBO Max TV series could cover.

The only real magic left in this world is intellectual property and its nigh supernatural ability to print money. With media conglomerates prioritizing their streaming services, beloved IPs have never been more valuable in garnering interest, sign-ups, and subscriptions for streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and HBO Max. WarnerMedia, the owner of the lattermost streaming service, also holds the rights to the Harry Potter IP, and of course they want to conjure up ideas to bring the world of The Boy Who Lived to television.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a Harry Potterlive-action TV series is in early development at HBO Max, with the streaming service having early-stage exploratory meetings with writers for potential ideas. There are no Harry Potterseries in development at the studio or on the streaming platform, HBO Max and Warner Bros said in a statement, but youd have to be as thick as Cornelius Fudge to believe they arent doing their darndest to extend that Galleons-filled universe.

A Voldemort Harry Never Knew

This type of series would also allow for the exploration of the events of the First Wizarding War, which occurred after Voldemorts initial rise to power. In fact, it was the threat of Voldemorts presence in this war that prompted the formation of the Order of the Phoenix .

Fans would even be able to get a glimpse into the events leading up to James and Lilys death as a result of Peter Pettigrews betrayal, something which is only denoted in the series after it happens.

With such a rich world left unexplored, why wouldnt we be excited about the possibility to dive into it again?
