The Actress Behind Harry Potter’s Ginny Weasley Moved To Los Angeles But Not For Her Career
It seems like all famous actors, screenwriters, and directors have to live in Los Angeles at some point or another, no matter where they’re from.
But when Ginny Weasley herself made the move to SoCal in 2016, her motives were surprisingly not job-oriented. “I don’t think I chose to make the move for career purposes in reality, I think I just wanted more space,” she shared in an interview with Into The Gloss. Bonnie Wright added that she chose LA as it’s completely different from London, where she grew up, and she’s curious about how her new surroundings will impact her development. And yes, she knows she’s getting a lot more sun!
So far, it’s been a good experience for her with regard to her productivity. “I think I get more done here,” the former Harry Potter star continued. “There’s more mental space.” Hopefully that means we’ll see new work from Wright soon!
She Got The Better Of Draco Malfoy
Ginny is part of a small group who are apprehended by Dolores Umbridge and her Inquisitional Squad after Harry breaks into her office in a desperate attempt to contact Sirius Black, who he believes is being held prisoner by Lord Voldemort after being shown his godfather writhing in pain while tortured. What the Order of the Phoenix movie doesn’t show, however, is her getting the better of Draco Malfoy.
A scuffle inside the office breaks out and Ginny hits Malfoy with her specialist Bat-Bogey Hex. This would have been fun to see, especially given how Malfoy enjoys teasing and bullying the Weasleys at every opportunity he gets.
They Rarely Communicate Throughout The Books
Im sure that a great portion of their falling in love happened between Harry defeating Voldemort and the books epilogue. But take a moment and think about how many actual conversations Harry and Ginny have.
The only two private conversations I can remember them having take place in the Chamber of Secrets and in Ginnys room in the final book.
We dont hear about their dates or study sessions, even when they are dating in The Half-Blood Prince. True, there are more important things for Rowling to talk about, but it would have been nice to hear these guys talk.

Harry Potters Ginny Weasley Star Bonnie Wright Unrecognisable As She Joins This Morning As Expert
- Invalid Date,
HARRY Potter actress Bonnie Wright appeared on This Morning today as an expert – 21 years after first appearing in the hit films.
The star first appeared aged nine in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and went on to star in the next seven movies.
Bonnie played Ron’s little sister Ginny, the youngest sibling in the Weasley family.
As Potter fans will know, Ginny becomes Harry’s main love interest in JK Rowling‘s story and – spoiler alert – marries him at the end of the series.
Since finding fame in the films she graduated from university in London, then founded a production company and began making short films.
She has also directed music videos, including one for Scarlett Johansson‘s song Iguana Bird with Pete Yorn.
Present: Independent Films And Directorial Focus
In 2012, Wright founded her film production company, BonBonLumiere. That same year, Wright made her directorial and screenwriting debut in , a coming-of-age short film starring Harry Potter co-star David Thewlis. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012 and the Gold Coast International Film Festival in 2013. Nick de Semlyen of Empire praised Wright’s direction, saying that “it’s an impressive first work from someone who clearly has ambition to burn.”
“Doing such big films gave me a desire to get more out of film-making, to get deeper into the process. When you are acting you are observing so much happening around you. I am directing actors having been directed myself, and there is specific type of language you have that is so unique. If you’ve been on the other side of it, it’s such a lovely experience.”
Wright reflecting on her transition from acting to directing
Wright’s next video was for independent artist MAGUIRE, entitled “Fallible”. It was released in June 2019 Fame Magazine called it a “breathtakingly candid portrait”. In March 2020, Wright narrated an audiobook adaption of Babbitty Rabbitty and her Cackling Stump from The Tales of Beedle the Bard, an in-universe book of Wizarding Worldchildren’s stories written by Rowling. The audiobook was released in aid of the charity Lumos.

Why Could She Hear Voices Behind The Veil
In Order of the Phoenix, Harry and his friends end up in the Ministry of Magic and find their way to the Department of Mysteries. While there, they encounter an odd room with a veil hanging in the center, where voices of dead loved ones can be heard by those that have lost someone. Luna, Harry, and Neville, having lost important people in their lives, are fascinated by the veil, having to be pulled away from it due to the danger it brings to whoever gets close. But Ginny also displays the same fascination… why? At this point she hadn’t lost her parents, brothers, or anyone close to her.
Ginny Came Up With The Name For Dumbledore’s Army
Ginny co-lead the group Dumbledore’s Army, along with Luna Lovegood and Neville Longbottom, while Harry, Ron, and Hermione were off doing their own thing. That being said, Ginny’s also the one who came up with the name for Dumbledore’s Army.
During a conversation with Cho Chang, Ginny came up with the idea for Dumbledore’s Army when Cho suggested that the group should be called The Defense Association. Ginny liked the letters of DA, so she made a suggestion based off of this.
Ginny told Cho “yeah, the DA’s good. Only, let’s make it stand for Dumbledore’s Army because that’s the Ministry’s worst fear, isn’t it?” Ginny’s witty intelligence created the perfect name for the group. This showed her ambition– she was already keen to go against the ministry, as well as Professor Umbridge.

Harry doesnt attend Hogwarts in what wouldve been his seventh year, and in his return, he learns what the other students have gone through, which involves torture by Death Eaters. Harry learns all this information from Neville, who’s been leading an underground resistance against the corrupt regime, and, of course, he appears beaten and bruised. Ginny is also part of the resistance, and like any other should have the same signs of torture, but she doesn’t! She looks normal and untouched, like the Death Eaters decided to skip the torture entirely when it came to her. Why was she spared?
Why Harry Potter Fans Think The Movies Failed This Weasley Character
The magical world of Harry Potter is filled with amazing characters, but fans think one of the best characters from the original book series got the short end of the stick on screen.
After J.K. Rowling’s young adult series about a young boy, Harry played on screen by Daniel Radcliffe who discovers that he’s actually a wizard hit shelves in the late 1990s, it became an instantaneous sensation. Naturally, it spawned a film adaptation pretty quickly, and in 2001, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone arrived in theaters however, one of the series’ most pivotal characters wouldn’t show up until the next installment.
In both the book and film of Chamber of Secrets, the second story in the Potter franchise, audiences and readers meet Ginny Weasley, the youngest daughter of the Weasley family, played by Bonnie Wright. By this point, Harry and Ginny’s older brother Ron are already best friends, along with Hermione Granger , and though the vivacious flame-haired Ginny is shy at first, she proves pivotal to the story not just in Chamber of Secrets, but throughout the entire series. However, fans of the books believe that Ginny gets shortchanged in the films here’s why Harry Potter fans think the movies completely failed Ginny Weasley.

Years Later However We All Know What Happens
Harry kept smiling, and waving, even though it was like a little bereavement, watching his son glide away from him … The last trace of steam evaporated in the autumn air. The train rounded a corner. She Seems Happier Without Him
I hate to bring it up, but it just seems so true. Again, I dont know what happens between the next to last and last chapters of Harry Potter that take Ginny and Harry to where they are at the end.
Im sure lots of moments where Ginny was happy with Harry happened the trouble is that we do not canonically see them.
And without those essential moments, it looks like Ginny was happier before she started dating Harry. Im also sure that this matter could be debated, and many disagree with me. This is just one theory.

While on set, Wright kept with her studies with the help of a tutor, and attained four A-levels in art, photography and design technology.

In 2012, Wright graduated from university with a Bachelor of Arts degree in filmmaking.
Harrys Sudden Feelings For Ginny
We all knew about Ginny’s obsession with Harry ever since that scene on Chamber Of Secrets when Harry drops by the Weasley’s home. It was apparent she had a crush on him since young and those feelings further developed as the years went by. However, Harry never seemed to realize this , having crushes on other girls, such as Cho Chang, and never paying a second glance at Ginny. However, in Half-Blood Prince, Harry’s feelings for Ginny appear without notice, coming as a surprise to the audience. Sudden and suspicious? Very much so.

When Harry Began To Realise He Had Feelings For Ginny
After Ginny broke up with Dean, Harry started to wonder if there would ever be a time to ask her out. Especially given Rons attitude towards her boyfriends.
Once or twice Harry considered asking for Hermiones help, but he did not think he could stand seeing the smug look on her face he thought he caught it sometimes when Hermione spotted him staring at Ginny, or laughing at her jokes. And to complicate matters, he had the nagging worry that if he didnt do it, somebody else was sure to ask Ginny out soonHarry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
She Came Up With Dumbledore’s Army
In Harry’s fifth year, Hogwarts falls under the control of the Ministry of Magic. The wizarding world’s governing body are suspicious of both Harry and Albus Dumbledore and install Dolores Umbridge as Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher as a result. She refuses to teach pupils, instead ordering them to copy out of a textbook in order to learn. And, if you’ve been at school, you know exactly how boring and unhelpful that can be.
Consequently, Harry begins to teach them the subject secretly. And it’s Ginny Weasley who comes up with the idea of naming the group “Dumbledore’s Army.” It was initially going to be called the Defence Association but Ginny insists on renaming it, saying Dumbledore’s Army is “the Ministry’s worst fear.” She’s proven right as well, with the Ministry attempting to arrest Albus Dumbledore after finding out about the secret organisation.

Harry Names All Their Children
This is an example of Ginnys passiveness when it comes to Harry. In the epilogue, its revealed that Harry and Ginny have three children, all three of them named after people who have passed.
Okay, so maybe Ginny would name one of her boys after Harrys father. But it doesnt sound like she got a say in any of her kids’ names! Didnt she have dreams about what she would name her kids growing up? Being the youngest in a busy house, she probably had dreams about what her own family would be like.
Harry Potter: 10 Things Only Book Fans Know About Ginny Weasley
Ginny Weasely goes from being a shy girl to a brave wizard in Harry Potter. While the movies did not always portray her well, this is what books show.
When Ginny Weasley is first introduced in The Sorcerer’s Stone, she’s a shy and timid girl. Having six older brothers appeared to have dented her confidence and she didn’t seem majorly important in the grand plot, despite opening the Chamber of Secrets during her first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
How wrong we were. Ginny evolves over the course of the books and ends up marrying Harry Potter with the pair having three children together, named James Potter II, Lily Potter, Albus Potter. While Ginny was fleshed out to perfection in the source material, the movies left out plenty of details about the character. So here are 10 things only book fans know about the youngest of the Weasley clan…

How Did They Adjust Post
Im not saying they didnt do this, I would just have liked to find out how. The nineteen years that pass between the defeat of Voldemort in The Deathly Hallows and the epilogue gloss over a lot. Mostly how Harry managed to adjust to life post-Voldemort. This wizard was literally inside of him for the first seventeen years of his life, not to mention all the close calls he experienced because of him. Harry would have to go through some deep, serious therapy. Id just like to know how Ginny, as a teenager, handled that.
Bonnie Wright Left Hogwarts And Harry Potter’s Ginny Weasley Behind
After all that time on the Harry Potter sets as Ginny Weasley, learning as she went, Bonnie Wright decided to officially take the next step in building and expanding her film education. Free from the Harry Potter franchise, she was able to chase her creative ambitions and enroll in college. “I’m studying film and television in London,” she revealed to Interview magazine in 2011. “I kind of went towards that: the idea of writing, storytelling, all the different things that go behind film.” After being on that set, who wouldn’t want to learn how to make movies?
Even though she obviously learned a lot while filming Harry Potter certainly a lot more than your average Jane could know school remained a longtime goal for her. “I always wanted to go to art school, and it’s one of the big art schools of London,” she continued. “So that was a dream that I completed.” Good for you, girl!
Wright finished school at the London College of Communication in 2012, according to the university website.
Dancing With Neville At Yule Ball
As Harry is looking for partners for the Yule Ball, it’s discovered that Ginny had already been asked by Neville Longbottom, showcasing how brave he actually is to have done something that neither Harry or Ron were able to do: ask a girl out. We also know that Hermione was Neville’s first choice, but she already had a date, so Ginny was the second choice, to which she agreed. However, there was no indication that the two knew each other, so it really only makes sense for the people watching the movies or reading the books, not for Neville or Ginny, making it an empty gesture that makes absolutely no sense.
She Found Out Percy’s Big Secret
During her first year at Hogwarts, Ginny is greatly troubled. But, when she attempts to let Harry, Ron, and Hermione in on her secret about the Chamber, she’s cut off by Percy Weasley.
But Percy doesn’t interrupt her to be rude. Instead, he’s fearful that she’ll blab about his own secret – his relationship with a Ravenclaw pupil Penelope Clearwater. With brothers like Fred and George, we can’t say we blame him. Penelope is one of the students left petrified by Tom Riddle’s Basilisk but, fortunately, she makes a full recovery. Ginny eventually lets the gang know Percy’s big secret while on the Hogwarts Express at the end of the school year.

Beginnings And Harry Potter Series
In 1999, castings were held across the UK for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the film adaptation of British author J. K. Rowling‘s best-selling . Wright’s elder brother had read the first two books in the series and informed her that she reminded him of Ginny Weasley. Wright did not have any prior professional experience aside from school plays, and asked her mother if she could audition “on a whim”. She gained a screen test for David Heyman after her pictures were sent to the film’s casting directors, and her parents were told she got the role shortly after.
Wright made her film debut at the age of nine upon the 2001 release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, appearing in a cameo role in a scene at London King’s Cross railway station, where her character and mother meet Harry Potter during the boarding of the Hogwarts express. The film broke sales records and was the highest-grossing film of 2001. She reprised her role the following year in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, in which her character begins studies at Hogwarts and encounters a secret diary that begins to control her actions. One critic cited her role as “important” but “underdeveloped”. The film broke the opening records of its predecessor and became the fifth-highest-grossing film of all time in the region.
