Richard Harris Turned Down Harry Potter Three Times

Richard Harris says he turned down his starring role in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone three times. He only took the role of Albus Dumbledore, headmaster of Hogwarts School, because his 11-year-old granddaughter talked him into it.

Zap2it.com reports that the Irish actor had never read the JK Rowling when he was approached about taking a role in the film. “All I knew is that they kept offering me the part and raising the salary every time they called. I kept turning it down,” said Harris.

Harris told Zap2it that he was aware of the huge box-office potential of the film, but at the age of 71 did not want to be roped into a series of sequels.

“Anyone involved has to agree to be in the sequels, all of them, and that’s not how I wanted to spend the last years of my life, so I said no over and over again,” said Harris.

However, Harris’s granddaughter Ella, heard of the offers. “She said, ‘Papa, I hear you’re not going to be in the Harry Potter movie’, and she said, ‘If you don’t play Dumbledore then I will never speak to you again,'” said Harris. That made up his mind and he finally agreed to the role, which only involved about three weeks work spread over a few months.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone opens nationwide in the UK on November 16.

Rowling, took to Twitter to praise Alan’s extraordinary talent and genuine friendship. BBC News reported he was “surrounded by family and friends” at the time of his death. Nina Young As The Grey Lady

Pin on Jennifer Johnson

When the ghost of the Grey Lady first appeared in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, no one could have predicted how important the character would later become. True to the first few books, she was originally depicted as just another one of the many poltergeists that pesters the students of Hogwarts, with actress Nina Young floating around in the CGI role. However, it would eventually be revealed in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows that she was so much more than some random apparition.

The Grey Lady was Rowena Ravenclaw’s daughter Helena, who had given Tom Riddle access to her mother’s diadem so that it could be made into one of his horcruxes. Considering the enhanced importance of the role that emerged in the later books, the film part was given to a more accomplished actress instead of its originator. Kelly Macdonald, who was tearing up the silver and small screens alike with her celebrated work in No Country for Old Men and Boardwalk Empire, stepped into the ghost’s shoes to give them a little more gravitas in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. According to Pottermore, the actress had previously been considered for the role of Nymphadora Tonks.

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

In the fifth book, Dumbledore is demoted from Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot, voted out of the Chairmanship of the International Confederation of Wizards, and is almost stripped of his Order of Merlin First Class due to his speeches regarding the return of Voldemort, although it is reported that he is unconcerned as long as he is not taken off the Chocolate Frog cards. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Magic does everything they can to discredit him and Harry mainly through the Daily Prophet. At the beginning of the book, Dumbledore enrages Fudge when he stops by at Harry’s hearing with a witness to ensure that he is not expelled. While Harry feels better when Dumbledore assists him, he becomes annoyed to the point of being angry that the headmaster refuses to speak to or even look at him.

Why Harry Potter Recast Dumbledore After Chamber Of Secrets

Albus Dumbledore was a major character in the Harry Potter series, but the role went through a recast early in the franchise, and here’s why.

Outside of the young trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, Albus Dumbledore served one of the most crucial roles in the Harry Potter franchise – but the character was recast after the second movie. Dumbledore was initially played by Irish actor Richard Harris when J.K. Rowling‘s books were adapted into movies by Warner Bros. Pictures. Following the second installment, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Dumbledore was recast, and here’s why.

When the role of the Hogwarts Headmaster was initially being cast ahead of 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, actors Patrick McGoohan and Sean Connery were targeted for the part. The key role eventually went to Harris, and the actor expected to play the part throughout the entire film franchise. He initially hesitated to take the role due to his health, but Harris was encouraged by his young granddaughter. Harris perfectly embodied the exceptional wizard and Harry’s mentor in the first two installments of the franchise.

How Did Dumbledore Learn Parseltongue

During Chamber of Secrets Harry Potter is plagued by voices in the walls. This is later revealed to be the Basilisk, slithering through the pipes and speaking in parseltongue, which Harry could understand due to his connection to Lord Voldemort. The reason no one else could hear the giant snake was because parseltongue is an incredibly rare ability.

However, in an interview, JK Rowling revealed that Dumbledore could speak or understand mermish, gobbledegook, and parseltongue. This is also shown in the Half-Blood Prince novel, as Dumbledore could understand the Gaunts speaking parseltongue while watching Bob Ogden’s memory in the pensieve. Yet, Dumbledore did not hear the basilisk during the events of Chamber of Secrets. This implies that he did not know parseltongue before the Chamber of Secrets, but understood the language by the Half-blood Prince.

As parseltongue is an innate ability, passed on through the Slytherin bloodline it is a mystery how Dumbledore learned the skill. What is more impressive is that Dumbledore appeared to learn to understand the language between Chamber of Secrets and the Half-Blood Prince, although we’ll never know how he did this.

Camelot Again And Henry Iv

Albus Dumbledore

For a while in the 1980s, Harris went into semi-retirement on Paradise Island, in the Bahamas, where he kicked his drinking habit and embraced a healthier lifestyle. It had a beneficial effect. Harris’s career was revived by his success on stage in Camelot, and powerful in the West End run of Pirandello’sHenry IV.

He was the subject of This Is Your Life in 1990, when he was surprised by Michael Aspel during the curtain call of the Pirandello’s play Henry IV at the Wyndhams Theatre in London.

His film work during this period included: Triumphs of a Man Called Horse , , Strike Commando 2 , King of the Wind and Mack the Knife plus the TV film version of Maigret, opposite Barbara Shelley. This indicated declining popularity which Harris told his biographer, Michael Feeney Callan, he was “utterly reconciled to”.

Gambon Wanted To Ensure He Did Not Impersonate Richard Harris In The Role

One of the first things that Michael Gambon made clear to the cast and crew was that he was going to have his own take on the character. He had no wish to or interest in simply doing an impersonation of Richard Harris. He explained that actors always want to try new things with characters rather than do what has been done before.

How Dumbledore Saw Through Tom Riddle’s Facade

Before he fully became Voldemort, many who knew Tom Riddle saw him as a bright, kind, and thoughtful student who was simply desperate to prove himself, Dumbledore, who knew Riddle was capable of great cruelty and vindictiveness from an early age, was always wary of the young wizard. Immediately after Riddle graduated, he applied for the post of Defense Against the Dark Arts professor and was turned down, and when he tried a second time, Dumbledore rebuffed him yet again.

Already on his way to becoming Lord Voldemort by the time he asked Dumbledore for a job, he’d already created at least one of his soul-carrying Horcruxes , which can only be crafted by committing murder Tom told Dumbledore that he wanted to pass his storied knowledge onto Hogwarts students, but it was obvious that Dumbledore had some idea of the kind of magic the future Voldemort would end up teaching, and he refused. In that moment, Dumbledore sealed the fate of the entire position: as he later pointed out to Harry, Voldemort jinxed the post, as no Defense Against the Dark Arts professor ever stayed for more than one year after that fateful meeting.

Why Didnt Harry Use Aguamenti In Dumbledores Mouth

He could have just pointed his wand in dumbledores mouth and uttered the spell. There was no point trying to fill the cup with the spell then having dumbledore drink it. Anyone else wonder this? The book made it sound like when the water, that wasnt from the lake, neared Dumbledores mouth, it would disappear.

It Saved Draco Malfoys Soul

Dumbledore

Dumbledore was a powerful wizard, as Voldemort knew full well. When the two dueled in Order of the Phoenix, the dark wizard had been forced to flee. Typically, he dispatched a Death Eater to do his dirty work, but in choosing Draco Malfoy to kill his rival, he set the young wizard on a dark path that he could never leave. Dumbledore knew that if Snape took his place, he would save Dracos soul.

Who Was Albus Dumbledore

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore was born in 1881 to Percival and Kendra Dumbledore, residing in Godric’s Hollow . Considered to be one of the greatest and most powerful wizards in history, Dumbledore was known for his distinctive long white beard, half-moon glasses, and whimsical attitude when fans first meet him, he’s cracking jokes about auspicious scars and offering up lemon drop candies like a kindly grandfather, and throughout Harry’s relationship with his professor and mentor, Dumbledore can often be inscrutable, funny, and intentionally vague.

However, at the end of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Harry’s relationship with Dumbledore is cut unexpectedly short when he is killed at the hands of Severus Snape while Harry watches, helpless. Though there’s more at play than he realizes in the moment, Harry is horrified as he watches one of his only parental figures fall to his death in June of 1997, which would make Dumbledore a whopping 116 years old when he died. Aside from a terminal illness caused by a cursed ring, Dumbledore seemed in great health during the rest of the series, so even at that advanced age, it’s easy to surmise that he could have lived even longer otherwise.

Why Was Dumbledore Teaching Defense Against The Dark Arts In The Crimes Of Grindelwald

One of the strangest things about the Crimes of Grindelwald was the fact that Dumbledore was teaching defense against the dark arts. This is odd because, famously, Dumbledore was the transfiguration professor for many years prior to becoming headmaster of Hogwarts.

So, why was Dumbledore teaching the class? Perhaps another teacher was ill at the time, as was the case when Snape took over Lupin’s class. This may just be a small quibble, but it is certainly curious.
