The Deathly Hallows Come Together At Last

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Return To Hogwarts – Itw Gary Oldman (official video)

There was an interesting Easter egg contained in Harry’s first shot of the last film. As he’s mourning by Dobby’s beachfront grave, he looked in a triangular fragment of a mirror the elf had possessed thanks to the circular nature of his glasses, it created the symbol of the Deathly Hallows in the reflection. It was a wink to how all three elements would eventually be his to do with what he wished.

The Deathly Hallows as Part 1 explained in animated format consisted of the Elder Wand, the Cloak of Invisibility, and the Resurrection Stone. When combined, the three gave a wizard untold power, the ability to disappear from Death’s purview, and a means to bring back lost souls. Voldemort got his hands on one the Elder Wand while Harry had been casually given the cloak in his earliest days at Hogwarts, not knowing its strength. He eventually recovers the Stone, too, after kissing his Snitch goodbye with the intention of sacrificing himself.

Harry Potter And The Sorcerers Stone: $125 Million

There was always going to be pressure on the first Harry Potter movie and whether it could do a sufficient job at bringing JK Rowlings books to life. And a huge $125m was pumped into the film to ensure it met the dizzying expectations of fans and get the series off to a flying start in the process.

While its not perfect – Daniel Radcliffes acting is a little wooden and some of the omissions from the source material are infuriating – it was definitely a solid start. Whats more is it topped the box office standings for 2001 worldwide, fending off competition from The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire: $150 Million

Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Return To Hogwarts – Itw Chris Columbus (official video)

The Goblet of Fire was always going to be a rather expensive movie to put together. After all, with the book being a huge 190,637 words long, there was certainly plenty of work to be done behind the scenes. Yet it did a brilliant job at telling the story of Harrys turbulent fourth year at Hogwarts and, on a budget of $150m, was cash well spent.

It topped the box office standings for 2005, narrowly fending off Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith and The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe to take the gold medal.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was the movie that showed that death was possible in the one-time children’s movie series. In this film, Harry took part in a tri-wizarding tournament that saw him battle in a series of tests to determine the school with the best young wizard.

However, that was just to move the plot along as the true importance of this movie, directed by Mike Newell, was to bring Lord Voldemort back from the dead, setting up the main villain for the rest of the series. Robert Pattinson of Twilight fame was a Hogwarts student in this movie, killed in cold blood by the Death Eaters, and Voldemort declared war on all wizards by the end of this film.

    • A scene is added showing Death Eaters stopping and searching the Hogwarts Express. Their intentions are left ambiguous until explained by Xenophilius Lovegood much later in the film.
    • Cho Chang, Katie Bell, and Cormac McLaggen are all seen on the Hogwarts Express, even though they should have graduated the previous year. However, a possible explanation to all this is that Katie was to return to make up for all the time she spent in St Mungo’s and McLaggen failing all his studies due to thinking up Quidditch plans or had to repeat a previous year. Another explanation would be that they had left the school due to Dumbledore’s death prior to taking their N.E.W.T.S. With regards to Katie, she is implied to be in Harry’s year in the films anyway seeing as she is shown to be in his Potions class in the sixth film.
    • The events of the new school year at Hogwarts, including the re-forming of Dumbledore’s Army and Snape’s position as Headmaster have been largely omitted, except for an announcement about the latter, and a scene where Harry observes Snape with the and finds him in the Headmaster’s office.
    • Lupin is not present at Grimmauld Place, and the large argument between him and Harry about the former’s son is omitted.

There was talk, due to domestic front-loading, that Warner Bros. wasnt sure if the series would make it to all seven books, but the robust performance of The Goblet of Fire answered that question.
