Who Plays Umbridge In Harry Potter

Don't Miss

She Dabbled In Disney After Harry Potter

The very best of Umbridge (Joe Walker) – AVPS – Part 1

After her stint in the Harry Potter films, it made sense for Staunton to transition into other blockbuster films, and eventually, she found her way into a few hugely successful Disney projects.

In 2010, Staunton joined Tim Burton’s adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic novel Alice in Wonderland, which features a few of her Potter co-stars, including Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall, and Helena Bonham Carter, as well as Staunton’s husband, Jim Carter. Though Staunton only speaks a few distinct lines during the film as the Talking Flowers, the physiques of the flowers are clearly based on her, so she leaves a distinct impression on the film despite her small role.

Staunton reappeared in Disney’s 2014 antihero tale Maleficent, which stars Angelina Jolie as the seemingly evil witch that terrorizes Aurora, or “Sleeping Beauty” , despite the fact that Maleficent actually cares for Aurora. Staunton appears as one of three pixies she specifically plays Knotgrass who are assigned to stay by Aurora’s side until she turns 16 and becomes safe from Maleficent’s clutches. Staunton later reprised the role in the 2019 sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.

Harry Potter: Imelda Staunton Hates Professor Umbridge As Much As You Do

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Professor Dolores Umbridge puts Hogwarts through hell by subjecting Harry to brutal penmanship-related detention, enacting myriad restrictions on the school, and attempting to eradicate Dumbledore’s Army .

But in week 5 of EW’s Bingepodcast, Imelda Staunton the actress behind the not-so-pretty-in-pink Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher absolutely delights, telling hosts Marc Snetiker and C. Molly Smith all about how she tapped into and played pure, unadulterated evil.

“I don’t have to have sympathy at all, not in the slightest,” Staunton says of getting into the villainous character who, for the most part, inspires a large portion of Marc and Molly’s recaps this week: Harry’s top ten ALL-CAPS MELTDOWNS.

“I think she’s a bloody monster and to be played as such,” Staunton continued. “I don’t need to understand what she does, but from a character point of view, she believes she’s doing the absolute best for that school. Yet again, I have embraced a completely and utterly deluded woman.”

She’s frightening, alright. Frighteningly good. < iframe src=”” scrolling=”no” width=”100%” height=”460″ frameborder=”0″ class=”” allowfullscreen=”” resize=”0″ replace_attributes=”1″ name=””> < /iframe>

Her Attitude Towards Her Own Lessons

Right from Harry and friends first class with Umbridge, its immediately apparent that theyre not going to learn anything of use from her. With the knowledge that Voldemort is active again and beginning to build up his forces once more, its more important than ever during The Order of the Phoenix that the students are prepared.

Sadly, Umbridge echoes the Minister of Magics denials that the villain has returned, seeing no need to teach the students any defensive magic or allow them to do anything at all in classes being reading their textbook. Classes continue in this vein as the school year goes on, to the extent that Harry, Ron, and Hermione eventually feel compelled to form Dumbledores Army and have Harry teach students himself.

She Became Headmistress And Abused Her Power Further

What happened to Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter?

It would be fair to say that dear old Dumbledore could be more than a little lax when it came to rules and regulations. As Fleur Delacour once said, a mischievous poltergeist would have been removed from Beauxbatons immediately, but Dumbledore allowed Peeves to torment the castles residents for his whole tenure.

The Actress Played The Hated Villain In The Fifth Film In The Popular Franchise

Words: Steve Brown

Imelda Staunton says she thought of Margaret Thatcher while she was playing the evil Dolores Umbridge in Harry Potter.

The actress joined the Harry Potter franchise in the fifth film Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix as the incredibly hated Dolores Umbridge, a character who has gone down in history as one of the most hated even more so than Lord Voldemort.

And now, while speaking to Out Magazine, the actress admitted she thought of the former Prime Minister who brought in the homophobic Section 28 when she was playing the character.

When asked what it was like playing a character so vile, Staunton said: Its so much fun because it’s got such muscle, a part like that.

And I have to say, because I came in with the fifth film and that was the first for director David Yates .

And we both came in as the new guys. But we had very good conversations, him and I, about the seriousness of this woman and about how dangerous she is to be in charge of children.

It was the ultimate nightmare of having someone like that who is really, really interested in ethnic cleansing, which is what she’s interested in. Pure blood. It’s horrible.

Anyway, but to play it, you have to sort of … we were thinking of having to compare with terrible atrocities and Margaret Thatcher.

These people who absolutely believe they are doing the right thing.

So it’s not like, I am evil, and I’m going to do …, and that’s so much more frightening.

Vera Drake Almost Netted Her An Oscar

The critical success of Shakespeare in Love gave Staunton a small taste of awards season, and in 2004, she scored an Academy Award nomination of her own, proving that she was the perfect actress for prestige projects. Helmed by well-regarded British director Mike Leigh, Vera Drake tells the story of a woman working under the radar in London to help preserve reproductive rights for the working class, with Staunton in the title role.

Vera risks her life and livelihood to help women in need, and even though she refuses to take payment for her services to women, she ends up in jail by the end of the film, unfairly punished for intended acts of charity and kindness. For her performance, Staunton received her first Academy Award nomination for Best Leading Actress and a Golden Globe nod for Best Actress. While Staunton didn’t win the Oscar she lost out to Hilary Swank for Million Dollar Baby the film did win the coveted Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival, and it also received BAFTA Awards for Staunton and Leigh.

Could Dolores Be Coming Back

What Happened To Dolores Umbridge From Harry Potter?

Imelda Staunton, who famously played the villainous Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter series, has revealed whether she would ever tread the boards to play her character in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Admitting that she was yet to see the theatre show, the iconic actress admitted that she thought she had “made impact” in the wizarding world, and so she “didn’t think” she’d go back to the franchise.

Imelda opened up about the role

However, she did reveal that she still manages to scare youngsters who best know her as the pink-clad Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, explaining: “Of course I can scare people. I don’t get a lot of kids coming up to me actually. It’s the grown up kids – you want to say you are 35 – but they grew up with it. Harry Potter doesn’t stop does it!”

More And More Of Her Prejudices Are Revealed

At this time in the history of the magical world, it was more important than ever that everybody bandied together to defeat the threat some knew was coming. Voldemorts return was imminent.

While supposedly working for the forces of good, however, Umbridge revealed herself to be a blinkered, judgmental woman. She was immediately dismissive of Hagrid, believing him to be a dim-witted oaf purely as a result of his half-giant nature. All of this Pure Blood nonsense was central to her worldview, as we would see during her later career at the Ministry, but more on that later, too.

Staunton Decided To Visit Downton Abbey

Staunton collaborates frequently with her husband, Jim Carter, who’s an esteemed and established actor in his own right. Carter has been a prominent performer for years, but ever since Downton Abbey first premiered in 2010, Carter has become a star as Carson, the head butler who manages the entire staff of the enormous, titular estate.

After the success of the original series, it seemed inevitable that Downton Abbey would get its own feature film, and in 2019, the Downton Abbey movie hit theaters. The film focuses on a visit from King George V to the Crawley estate. And in the film, Carter reprises his role as Carson, while Staunton plays Maud, one of Queen Mary’s ladies-in-waiting. The movie premiered to positive reviews, and it also allowed Staunton to work with her Potter co-star Maggie Smith, who played Professor McGonagall in the wizarding film series.

A New Spin On Shakespeare

Imelda Staunton’s biggest supporting turn came in 1998 when she appeared in the Oscar-winning Shakespeare in Love, acting closely alongside Academy Award winners Gwyneth Paltrow and Colin Firth . The film focuses on one of Shakespeare’s most creative periods and details his ultimately doomed love affair with gentlewoman Viola de Lesseps . Though the two must part ways after they perform together in Romeo and Juliet, their bond gives him the inspiration to write Twelfth Night.

As for Staunton, she plays Viola’s nursemaid, a loyal servant who helps cover up the noblewoman’s affair with Shakespeare and semi-successfully hides the romance from Viola’s vindictive and fussy fiancé, Lord Wessex . As a perfect piece of trivia, Staunton’s real-life husband, Jim Carter, plays an actor who takes on the role of Juliet’s nurse in the play, mirroring his actual spouse and her role in the film. Staunton also appeared with yet another future Potter star, Mark Williams , though the two don’t share screen time in either project.

She’s The Only Person Other Than Lord Voldemort To Leave A Permanent Physical Scar On Harry

J.K. Rowling Publishes New Harry Potter Story About the Malevolent ...

It’s also during Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix that we begin to see just how sadistic Umbridge actually is. As J.K. Rowling mentioned once on Pottermore, “Her desire to control, to punish and to inflict pain, all in the name of law and order, are, I think, every bit as reprehensible as Lord Voldemort’s unvarnished espousal of evil.” To punish Harry for saying that they needed to learn defensive spells to protect themselves against Lord Voldemort , she gave him a very unique form of detention.

Umbridge made Harry write I must not tell lies over and over again with a quill that had no ink. Instead, it was magically enchanted to use the writers blood, leaving a painful, inflamed scar on his hand. For weeks, he had to endure this rather Medieval form of torture while Umbridge relished in making her point via pain. In fact, Umbridge had created these torture devices, known as Black Quills, bewitching them with dark magic to keep children in line. The fact that J.K. Rowling made her the only other person to leave a permanent mark on Harry besides the Dark Lord shows us what a truly evil person she really was.

The actress, who is just 5ft tall, was encouraged to go to drama college by an elocution teacher who spotted her talent.

Aged 18, she successfully enrolled at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art .

Imelda Staunton Played In Paddington

Staunton might not have appeared on screen in her next huge project an adaptation of another beloved children’s book series but her role was an incredibly vital one. In 2014’s Paddington, Staunton provided the voice of Aunt Lucy, who remains off-screen for most of the film but still manages to provide an emotional backbone for the entire narrative.

Paddington, the title bear with a toggle coat and signature hat voiced by Ben Whishaw, spends his childhood with his loving Uncle Pastuzo and Aunt Lucy in darkest Peru, all of whom are part of a hyper-smart species of bears that can speak. When Pastuzo is tragically killed in an earthquake, Aunt Lucy sends Paddington to live in London, where he’s adopted by the quirky, kind Brown family.

Though Aunt Lucy is absent from the rest of the first film, she’s always with Paddington, and in the second film, he embarks on a mission to bring her to London to live with him and the Browns. Despite difficulties and struggles, he eventually succeeds, and Staunton briefly reprises her role in Paddington 2 during the film’s tear-jerking, emotional climax.

Return To The Ministry

After her dismissal from Hogwarts, Umbridge returned to the Ministry as the Senior Undersecretary to the new Minister, Rufus Scrimgeour. She purposely chose to continue to torment Harry by informing the Minister of Harry’s wish to become an auror. Harry refused to trust Scrimgeour or the Ministry of Magic due to the fact that Umbridge was never sacked or arrested for her actions.

Umbridge was later seen at Dumbledore’s funeral, attempting to look appropriately somber. She was startled by the appearance of Firenze, clearly having been traumatised by her encounter with the centaurs.

After Voldemort’s takeover of the Ministry of Magic, Umbridge oversaw the registration and persecution of Muggle-born witches and wizards under the Muggle-Born Registration Commission. In her position, Umbridge conducted biased trials that subjected Muggle-born witches and wizards to dementors and have them sent to Azkaban prison for “stealing magic from real witches and wizards”. Following Alastor Moody‘s murder, Umbridge somehow obtained possession of his magical prosthetic eye and had it affixed into the door to her office as a way of terrorising Ministry employees and reminding them she was observing them at all times.

After Voldemort’s defeat by Harry at the Battle of Hogwarts and the restoration of the Ministry of Magic by the new Minister, Kingsley Shacklebolt, Umbridge was sentenced to life imprisonment in Azkaban for her crimes against Muggle-borns.

She Was The Headmistress After The Battle Of Hogwarts In An Alternate Universe

Umbridge – Hp 5 –

If you haven’t read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and don’t want any spoilers about it, skip this entry. For everyone else, read on! Believe it or not, Umbridge actually has the chance to be Headmistress of Hogwarts twice in the Harry Potter universe. During Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore leaves Hogwarts after Fudge and the Ministry try to forcibly remove him. That leaves Umbridge, as High Inquisitor, to appoint herself as Headmistress in his absence. While she’s definitely nasty in that universe, she’s even more horrifyingly awful in an alternate universe created during the events of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

When Scorpius Malfoy and Albus Potter use the time-turner to try and save Cedric Diggory, they end up in another timeline of the present where Harry was killed and Umbridge is again Headmistress of Hogwarts following Lord Voldemort’s victory during the Battle of Hogwarts. It’s a terrifying reality where the screams of Mudbloods are heard throughout the school as they’re tortured in the dungeons. Basically, it’s everything Umbridge could have ever wanted as a Pure Blood crusader and twisted sadist.

We first meet Umbridge in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Freshly appointed to the yet-again-vacant Defense Against the Dark Arts post after the not-so-great choices Dumbledore had previously made, she eagerly steps up to make her own speech at the start-of-term feast while Dumbledore is talking. Right from her very first words as professor, shes keen to try and ingratiate herself with everybody.

How lovely to see all your bright, happy faces smiling up at me Im sure were all going to be very good friends, she simpers in the cutest, pinkest outfit since pinkness itself. All the decorative kitten plates in the world couldnt hide the true darkness within her, though, which becomes plainer and plainer as time goes on.
