What About The Harry Potter Movies

What Period Of Time Will The Harry Potter Based Series Take Place?

Things get a little more complicated when comparing the Harry Potter books timeline to the films. Fans have long argued whether the films take place in the 2000s. There are signs that suggest this to be the case. The Death Eaters successfully demolish the Millennium Bridge in the films, which obviously didnt exist before the 2000s. A real-life Privet Drive attraction puts Dudley Dursley in primary school during 2001. And of course, the Harry Potter cast look and appear in fashion contemporary to their films release.

Its still possible, of course, that the Harry Potter films follow the books. Lily and James were both born in 1960 and still died in 1981 in the films, according to a tombstone seen in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. So while theres certainly a fair amount of evidence to prove the Warner Bros. Harry Potter films take place during the 2000s, its entirely possible that the movies take some creative liberties with timenot unlike parts of the books.

What Is The Setting Of Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry Like the other Harry Potter movies, a majority of Order of the Phoenix is set at good ol Hogwarts. This is Harrys home away from home. Well, actually his main home since we dont count the house he lives at on Privet Drive during the summer as much of a home.

When Did The Harry Potter Books Take Place

I always wondered when the setting of the books was supposed to be. Is it set in the past? Present? Future?

I remember seeing somewhere that there was actual years/dates associated with events in the book.

Is there a visual timeline of all the Harry Potter events somewhere with years/months/days mentioned?

All dates in the HP world trace back to the Death Day party of Nearly Headless Nick in The Chamber of Secrets. It was stated that his it was his 500th Death Day. The cake reads:

Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpingtondied 31st October, 1492

So, it stands to reason that during the second year, Harry Potter was 12, and that it was the year 1992. All dates can be calculated from that moment in time.

It should also be noted that this isn’t strictly adhered to, specifically, Dudley has Playstation before they came out, among other things.

So What’s The Recommended Reading Order

Fortunately, Harry Potter isn’t one of those series like Star Wars has a sprawling number of canon novels, film novelizations, reference books, and comics to read. Instead, it’s a finite universe which makes catching up on it much easier. We recommend reading the main series chronologically so that you can see Harry and his friends grow up. Then if you’re still thirsting for more of the Wizarding World ;you can see where your interests most strongly lie , and start again there.

If you still havent read Harry Potter, just know that its never too late to start and even for those who have, youre never too old to go back and relive the magic.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets

Ranking the Harry Potter movies

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry and friends return to Hogwarts with a bang the bang of a flying Ford Anglia as it crashes into the Whomping Willow, that is. After being spotted by Muggles and narrowly avoiding expulsion, youd think that the rest of Harrys second year would be smooth sailing in comparison right?

Wrong. When the school caretakers cat is found petrified along with a bone-chilling message that the Chamber of Secrets has been opened, fear and suspicions start to arise and of course, only worsen when students start getting petrified too. Nobody can figure out who the culprit is, only that he refers to himself as the Heir and seems to be on the warpath.

But as our young heroes know well by now, if you want a mystery solved right, you have to do it yourself. Which they do through a combination of Polyjuice potion brewing, mysterious flashbacks provided by a sentient journal, and a truly horrific excursion to see a giant spider called Aragog. The book culminates in a visit to the titular chamber, which lies underneath Hogwarts and contains yet another deadly threat that Harry must face.

But of course, this being an early Potter book, its not all din and danger. Comic relief comes in the form of moronic, egocentric professor Gilderoy Lockhart, and toilet ghost Moaning Myrtle who, in true Rowling fashion, ends up being key to the central plot twist of the story.

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire

Theres quite a bit to unpack in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, so well dive right in: after attending an eventful Quidditch World Cup with Hermione and the Weasley family, Harry returns to Hogwarts for his fourth year of school. Its bound to be an exciting one, as Hogwarts is hosting the Triwizard Tournament, in which students from three major wizarding academies will compete. However, only students aged seventeen or older are eligible for the competition, which means Harry is safe for once or so he thinks, until the ceremonial Goblet of Fire selects him as the fourth Triwizard Champion for no discernible reason.

What follows is a nonstop sequence of thrills, landmarked by the challenges of the tournament in which the contestants must tackle menacing dragons, malevolent mermaids, and a maze full of potentially fatal tricks and traps. But even between the challenges themselves is plenty of riveting drama, especially with Rita Skeeter , Mad-Eye Moody , and Hermiones most recent social justice cause . And as anyone whos read it will know, the GoF finale is unprecedented in terms of dark, difficult material, signaling a definitive shift for the series in a more mature direction.

Time Travel: The Tensed Versus The Tenseless View Of Time

In;Prisoner of Azkaban, Hermione makes use of the Time-Turnera device that allows Harry and her to time travel. But before we say more about these events it is important to get straight some basic facts about time travel in general. First, we need to understand that there is only one conception of time in which;time;travel makes sense, namely, the tenseless theory of time. The common-sense view of time is the tensed view which holds that time, unlike space, flows or becomes . On this view, time, like a river, is a dynamic or changing entity. According to the tensed theory of time, the future is undetermined, unreal, and open. The past is set, but long gone like faded fireworks. Only the present is real on this view, and the present is where the past and future meet. The tensed view of time is not only the common sense view, at one time it was also widely held by philosophers. Take this passage from Augustine for example: How can the past and future be when the past no longer is and the future is not yet? As for the present, if it were always present and never moved on to become the past, it would not be time but eternity .

Harry Flew Past The London Eye Before It Existed

Hogwarts is located somewhere in Scotland, but most of the time spent among Muggles in the story of;Harry Potter;happened in the city of London. Filming scenes in London for the;Harry Potter;movies was always going to be an issue in terms of creating historical anachronisms, which is likely why the film-makers never worried about them too much.

One instance where filming in London caused a chronological hiccup was during a fly-by scene in;Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,;as the London Eye appears in the background.;The Deathly Hallows: Part 2;is meant to take place in 1998, which was when construction on the London Eye had only just begun.

Timeline Of The Harry Potter Movies

Using only information found in the 10 Harry Potter movies, , what timeline of events can we make for the Harry Potter Universe?

To keep this from getting to broad, let’s focus on just years, not specific day to day things.

The relevance of this question is to determine whether the new Fantastic Beasts franchise ever contradicts the timeline established in the first eight movies.

Again, I’m only looking for info from the movies themselves. No books, interviews, etc

  • 2A problem with compiling such a timline is that there are very few references to dates in the movies. FBAWTFT explicitly states the year it takes place, but the original movies have few mentions to actual dates.Dec 3 ’18 at 8:15
  • 2One thing I can’t get my head round is that Dumbledore looks young-middle-aged in The Crimes Of Grindelwald which is set in the late 1920s, but in the flashback sequence in Chamber Of Secrets , he looks quite old; Riddle’s time at school was in the early 1940s. Dumbledore looks like he’s aged about 35 years in only 13 or so. Did the battle with Grindelwald age him prematurely?Dec 3 ’18 at 12:09

The Cars In Privet Drive Were Made In 1999 In The Year 1991

Film: Return to the magical world of Harry Potter

We never saw much of the Muggle world in;Harry Potter,;with the bulk of the books taking place in and around Hogwarts. The most we see of the non-magical world happens during Harry’s time at Privet Drive over the summer.

The first;Harry Potter;movie shows us Privet Drive as it’s being bombarded with letters from Hogwarts. There’s a scene where we see lots of owls sitting outside of the house, much to the despair of the Dursleys. All of the cars shown on Privet Drive are Vauxhall Vectra Estates, which were not made available to the public until the year 2000, even though the start of;Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone;takes place in 1991.

Hogwarts Year Three 1993

Events at the Shrieking Shack, June 1994

Internal evidence suggests that these events, filling more than five of the book’s twenty-two chapters, occurred between about 8:30 PM on the last day of exams, and 12:30 AM the following morning, in Harry’s third year at Hogwarts. The constraints of the timeline generator require that we assign actual times. We do not intend these times to be taken as in any way being canon, except for 9PM and midnight which are specifically given in the text; all other times are guides only.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a two-part play, written by J.K. Rowling and two others Jack Thorne and John Tiffany. Set nineteen years beyond Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the play delves into the lives of Harry, Ginny, Ron and Hermione and their children. Interestingly, it involves Harrys son Albus and Dracos son Scorpius using time-turners to go back in time and prevent certain past events from taking place so that the course of their future is altered. However, all they end up doing is creating alternative timelines, including one in which Voldemort survives and is now the ruler of the wizarding world. Now, that is definitely something, isnt it? But who is the Cursed Child we all may have our own interpretations.

Laws Concerning Magical Creatures

FIRST TIME WATCHING: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (part 1)…tears, just tears

In both the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and the film of the same name, laws governing magical creatures are often referenced. Like any laws, these are changed over time, and vary from country to country.

There are three distinct definitions for all magical creatures given in the Fantastic Beasts book, which are “Beasts”, “Beings” and “Spirits” which were defined in 1811 by the British Minister for Magic. “Beings” are defined as “any creature that has sufficient intelligence to understand the laws of the magical community and to bear part of the responsibility in shaping those laws”.

Laws have been created surrounding the management of magical creatures, largely for the purposes of their protection, but also to protect wizards from dangerous creatures, govern ownership of certain creatures, and also to hide them from the Muggle world. In the Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them film, the political climate of the wizarding community at the time saw a blanket ban on possessing all magical creatures.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows

Or as its known colloquially, Harry Potter and the Worst Camping Trip Ever. After the events of the previous book culminating in another major characters heartbreaking death Harry vows to personally destroy every one of Voldemorts Horcruxes. These Horcruxes are objects containing pieces of Voldemorts soul, rendering him effectively immortal. Which means that if Harry wants even a chance at killing Voldemort face-to-face, hell need to locate and eliminate the Horcruxes first. Its this daunting prospect that leads to the Worst Camping Trip Ever though of course, its brightened somewhat by the presence of the ever-faithful Ron and Hermione.

To be fair, the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows arent as quotidianly miserable as the events of OotP at least we know the characters are suffering for a greater purpose. But that doesnt stop this from being, as you might expect, the darkest book in the series. From the corrupting influence of a locket that causes Ron to abandon his friends, to the tragic prophecy that Harry uncovers through more of Snapes past memories, this book truly tests the readers tolerance for beloved characters in distress.
