The Harry Potter Film Series Returns To Hbo Max: Why Did It Leave

Harry Potter-Take it Off

The Harry Potter film series sparked a generation filled with young children expecting letters straight from Hogwarts in their mailboxes on the day of their eleventh birthdays. Unfortunately, weve all discovered soon enough we were nothing but Muggles. While you may still be slightly annoyed that you werent destined to be a wizard, we can all at least revisit and vicariously live out a life of magic through the Harry Potter film series.;

Lucky for us, while the Harry Potter movies was taken off HBO Max about a year ago, the film series is finally back on the streaming service, and folks couldnt be any more excited to binge it all. And yes, we mean every single movie from the series. However, why was it taken off the streaming platform in the first place, and is it actually staying for good this time around? Lets celebrate and look further into the details here.

A few issues;

When HBO Max first dropped, the streaming platform promised us tons of exciting content. This included films from the Criterion Collection for the artsy film nerds, Warner Bros. films for the blockbuster movie fanatics, Studio Ghibli films for the anime lovers, and tons more. The streaming platform also promised the entire Harry Potter film series for all the Potterheads around the world.;

Its back;

All Harry Potter Movies Streaming On Hbo Max Starting Sept 1 After Flying Off Nbcus Peacock

The Boy Who Lived is changing his U.S. streaming address again.

All eight original Harry Potter films from Warner Bros. are returning to HBO Max next month, after spending a little less than a year on NBCUniversals Peacock.

More from Variety

Starting Sept. 1, the eight wizarding films based on J.K. Rowlings best-selling novels will be available on HBO Max: Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2.

When HBO Max launched in May 2020, it included the octet of Harry Potter movies but that was only a three-month carve-out on streaming rights the studio had sold to NBCU. In October 2020, Peacock began streaming the Harry Potter movies; now WarnerMedia has again reclaimed the rights to the magical film series for HBO Max.

Such popular library fare has proven to be a reliable way to attract and retain subscribers amid the fiercely competitive streaming wars. The eight Harry Potter films, released between 2001 and 2011, rank as the third highest-grossing movie franchise with a worldwide haul of $7.7 billion .

Content is king if you can find it.

As streaming services proliferate, it is becoming more of a challenge to track down your favorite TV shows and blockbuster movies when streaming services can change up their offerings every month. That is complicating life for those who know what they want to watch, but just do not know where to locate it.

Some hits are practically itinerants. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, for instance, bounced around four different services between March 2020 and March 2021 Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, and Peacock. Some of these services hosted the movies twice in that time according to Reelgood, a service that tracks videos across streaming services.

Why do some film and show titles keep switching platforms?

Want to watch a Harry Potter movie? Films in the series started on HBO Max in May 2020 before heading to Peacock in August. They then jumped back to HBO Max in June 2021 but only for a single month. At the moment, the first three films are available for free on Peacock, but you will need a premium subscription for the last five.

Not long after its March launch, Paramount+ reclaimed some of its movies, like Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and the Paul Rudd comedy I Love You Man;from other services.

Top 5 Anticipated Harry Potter Spin-Off Shows For HBO Max

As of September 1, 2021, the above movies will leave Peacock and will come back to HBO Max. That streaming service is owned by Warner Media, which also owns Harry Potter movie makers Warner Bros., so eventually the films are expected to become a permanent part of the HBO Max collection.

Why have these films moved around so much recently? Because of deals that existed before Warner decided to launch its own streaming service and was instead making money from its catalog by licencing its content out to others.

In this case, HBO Max had a deal with NBCUniversal in 2016 that gave the studio TV and digital rights for the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts movies from 2018 to 2025 a deal that Variety estimated was worth around $250 million. This was an expansion of a previous deal that allowed NBCUniversal to bring the Wizarding World to Universal Studio theme parks.

This deal meant that NBCUniversal was able to show the films on its channels , as well as its digital platforms.

This was, however, before either NBCUniversal or Warner announced their plans to launch streamers of their own, which complicated the deal somewhat. This is why the films keep jumping from streamer to streamer Warner keeps negotiating with NBC to create what Variety called “carve out on streaming rights.” Basically, Peacock has the streaming rights for Harry Potter, but keep making deals that allow HBO Max to stream the movies for set times.

All Eight Harry Potter Films Returning To Hbo Max This September

HBO Are Rumoured To Be Rebooting The Harry Potter Franchise

All eight ‘Harry Potter’ films available to watch on HBO Max from September

Warner Bros.

Just in time for Back to Hogwarts celebrations, all eight Harry Potter films will return to HBO Max from September.

After a brief period of streaming on NBCUniversals streaming site, Peacock, the movies will be available on WarnerMedias HBO Max. The eight movies were originally available on HBO Max for a three month period upon the streaming services launch in May 2020 . It is unclear at this point how long the digital streaming rights for the movies will stay with WarnerMedias HBO Max, and whether fans will have to look for the series in a new home in the not-too-distant future.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald are not included on the list of films being added to HBO Max in September, so fans will seemingly have to look out for the two prequel films elsewhere.

The 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone is this November, so streaming giants will likely have their eyes on the rights to the movies for this period, as fan nostalgia kicks in for the anniversary of the first movie – it is unknown how long WarnerMedias HBO Max will keep the films for this time around.

Opinionnbc’s Peacock Launches With A Clear Winner But It’s Not The One You Think

What happens in between? Potter will be continue to be available on Syfy and USA, via cable subscriptions. But it wont be found on any streaming services, part of an ever-growing mass of films currently in limbo, some relatively obscure, some famous. TV critic Mike Ryan recently wrote of his own failed hunt for Cocoon, once a box-office smash, but now lost somewhere in the red tape of rights ownership with no complete explanation for why it cannot be found.

At least the Harry Potter moves are being publicly covered, via the monthly missives from Warner and NBCUniversal detailing whats going and coming from their services. We can thank Netflix for these updates, a legacy of its Silicon Valley approach to content management. Netflix didnt seem to think such information was necessary; once users highlighted a few favorites, the algorithm would do all the work or so the thinking went. That gave rise to an entirecottageindustry of Netflix-centric sites that exist solely to tell you what to watch and where to find it.

This led to Netflix eventually releasing a monthly list of whats coming and whats going, which other companies now dutifully replicate. But the technocrat anti-customer-service mindset remains, leaving it up to the ever-more frustrated consumer to work out whats available when and who owns what and where it all is at any given time, if it is even available at all.

Where Do The Harry Potter Movies Stream On Netflix

Viewers outside of the U.S. do not have these same problems in watching the franchise, but currently only two countries can watch the eight films on Netflix.

Those two countries are Australia and Turkey.

In the U.K. all of the movies are on Virgin TV Go. In Canada, the movies currently do not have a streaming home.
