Where Is The Harry Potter Castle

Don't Miss

The Highlands Of Scotland

LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle 2018 full review! 71043

JK Rowling has said in interviews that she always imagined Hogwarts to be in Scotland, so it’s appropriate that some of the most stunning scenes depicting the grounds of the Harry Potter Castle were filmed in the beautiful Scottish Highlands.

Look out for the location of Hagrid’s hut at Glencoe, near the Clachaig Inn, which is also where Hermione punches Malfoy in The Prisoner of Azkaban, and Loch Eilt with its tiny island of Eilean Na Moine which was the location of Dumbeldore’s grave in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.

Keep an eye out too for Loch Morar, the largest freshwater lake in Britain, which along with nearby Loch Arkaig and Loch Shiel were digitally blended together to create Hogwarts Lake.

As you pass desolate Rannoch Moor imagine yourself in The Deathly Hallows Part 1, where the Dementors board the train looking for Harry.

Nearby are Steall Falls, Britain’s second highest waterfall, and the surrounding beauty of Glen Nevis, it’s been a filming location multiple times in the Harry Potter movies, most notably as the scenic background to some exciting Quidditch games!

Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone

Hogwarts in Philosopher’s Stone

In the Philosopher’s Stone film, only the parts of the castle that were needed for the film were created. This means that many areas of Hogwarts were missed. Areas of the castle included in the film were:

Hogwarts Castle in Chamber of Secrets

In the Chamber of Secrets film, there are a few small changes:

Shell Cottage: Freshwater West Pembrokeshire Wales

This stretch of golden sand was the location for Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacours Shell Cottage in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. When Harry found himself inside the whimsical cottage he could hear nothing but the ebb and flow of the sea. Although the cottage was taken down after filming, you can still follow in the footsteps of Harry and friends.

It’s also the spot to catch surfers expertly riding waves kicked up by the strong rip currents just off the beach. The south-westerly facing spot boasts Wales best waves.

Platform : Kings Cross Station London England

harry

The Hogwarts Express departs from Platform 9¾ of Kings Cross Station, which is actually the arched wall between platforms 4 and 5.

Or, head towards the entrance to platforms 9, 10 and 11 on the west side of the station where youll find a trolley disappearing into the magical realm through a wall marked Platform 9 ¾. To help you get into character theres a shop selling fun accessories from round Harry Potter specs to Hufflepuff hair scrunchies.

Outside is the Neo-Gothic facade of St Pancras where the Weasley’s magical Ford Anglia, with its powers of invisibility, takes off in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The Bodleian Library Oxford

The magnificent Bodleian Library provided filming locations for 3 of the Harry Potter films. Duke Humfrey’s Library was used as the Hogwarts’ library, where Hermione is often seen reading. The English Gothic Room of the Divinity School, dating from 1488 and the oldest teaching room at the University stood in for the Hogwarts Infirmary, for example in the scene where Ron recovers after being poisoned in The Half Blood Prince.

Goathland Station North Yorkshire

But perhaps the most magical location of all is Goathland Station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. This setting was transformed into Hogsmeade station in Harry Potter & The Philosophers Stone. The final stop for the Hogwarts Express saw Harry, Hermione and Ron step out into the wizarding world of Hogwarts for the very first time.

Those That Arent Real

Now, you might be a bit disappointed that a lot of the castles youve seen in the movies arent real.

For example, the depiction of Beauxbatons Academy in France is entirely CGI, as well as all of the other castles youve seen.

Computer-generated effects persist even in some later shots of Hogwarts.

With that being said, a variety of other locations was used for the shoots.

If youre looking to experience more of the Harry Potter universe in real life, you might find that it suits your needs to go through the variety of cathedrals such as Gloucester Cathedral.

At the Glouchester Cathedral, many of the Harry Potter fans report a genuinely magical experience.

This cathedral is featured in the Philosophers Stone, Chamber of Secrets, and the Half-Blood Prince.

It was used to display the interiors of Hogwarts, and the interior of the cathedral makes for some easily recognizable shots.

A variety of other locations such as the Millenium Bridge and Australia House were used in the shooting of the films.

The Leaky Cauldron: Leadenhall Market London England

Massive Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle From 1,000,000 LEGO Bricks WORLD RECORD

Wizard pub, The Leaky Cauldron, was set in what is now an opticians in Bulls Head Passage, Leadenhall Market. Behind that was where the glittering Diagon Alley shopping street was imagined, selling spell books and potions so enticing that Harry wished he had eight eyes to see.

Whilst you probably wont find any magic shops, the ornate Victorian marketplace is a splendid place to pick up some Harry Potter inspired British fashion. Bag yourself a classic wax Barbour jacket, as sported by Ron Weasley in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Main article:Astronomy Tower

The Astronomy Tower was the tallest tower at Hogwarts Castle, surrounded by a parapet and turret. It is where students studied the stars and planets through their telescopes in Astronomy lessons with ProfessorAurora Sinistra. This was usually done at midnight when the stars were best seen. The tower was usually out-of-bounds except for classes. All the way down from the boathouse, one could see the huge window of the Astronomy Tower. Located within this tower was the Astronomy Corridor, Astronomy reading room, Astronomy classroom, Astronomy stairwell, Astronomy department and the Astronomy Room. In 1997, Hogwarts’ headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, was killed here on this tower by his eventual successor, Severus Snape. However, it was planned between Dumbledore and Snape to spare Draco Malfoy being a murderer and spare the headmaster from a slow painful death. This was because Dumbledore’s hand was affected by a dangerous curse created by Tom Marvolo Riddle, to protect his Horcrux .

Hidden Halos: Gloucester Cathedral Gloucester England

Look out for Nearly Headless Nick or Moaning Myrtle and see where Harry and Ron hid from the troll in the spooky corridors of 1,300-year-old Gloucester Cathedral one of five locations used for Hogwarts.

The cathedral had to be altered for filming in a number of fascinating ways! Electrical points were disguised under panels painted to look like the stone walls, whilst anything that would reveal the set as a church was concealed. For instance halos on the stained glass figures in the cloister windows were covered with coloured plastic filter paper to blend in with the glass around it.

For signs of the cathedrals ancient past, you can enter a wooden door that leads down to the old crypt, said to be haunted by monks from the old Gloucester monastery.

Harry first discovered his gift for talking with snakes, in Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, at London Zoo‘s Reptile House.
