Harry Potter & The Philosopher’s Stone
For those seeking flawless performances and a watertight plot, Harry Potter & The Philosopher‘s Stone perhaps wouldn’t be recommended viewing. The fledgling cast are still honing their craft and this particular adventure is far more in the mold of a traditional children’s story than subsequent books would be. However, the first Harry Potter movie was charged with establishing the tone, characters and visuals of the entire series. Everything from the iconic Hogwarts design and the Harry-Ron-Hermione dynamic to the renowned performances of Alan Rickman , Maggie Smith and Robbie Coltrane stems from the achievements of The Philosopher‘s Stone. Later films would be more polished and tell stronger stories, but there are few better examples of visual world-building than the Christopher Columbus-directed debut Potter film.
The Improbable Beasts Timeline Begins
The Improbable Beasts timeline basically begins with Albus Dumbledore a secretive wizard from a household that suffered a horrific tragedy. A younger Albus Dumbledore discovered himself drawn into the orbit of charismatic anti-Muggle campaigner Gellert Grindelwald and even briefly helped Grindelwald put collectively his marketing campaign and technique. The 2 had an intense romantic relationship and separated in heartbreaking circumstances. Theyd forevermore be opposed to at least one one other.
Grindelwald efficiently acquired the Elder Wand and started to launch rallies throughout Europe. His title was related to a wave of anti-Muggle violence, and a global search started to seek out and detain him. By the Nineteen Twenties, Grindelwald had targeted on gaining a strong ally he discovered of a strong Obscurus in New York and traveled there to seek out him. That leads immediately into the occasions of the primary two Improbable Beasts motion pictures.

This period can also be notable for a collection of occasions revealed in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Whereas Grindelwald was gaining energy and notoriety as a formidable Darkish Wizard, one other darkness loomed in the way forward for the Harry Potter timeline. In the identical period, Merope Gaunt grew to become infatuated with a Muggle and gave beginning to Tom Riddle the toddler who would turn out to be Lord Voldemort.
The Movie Should Address Dumbledore’s Sexuality
Ever since J.K. Rowling stated in an interview that Dumbledore was gay, this aspect of his background has been a plot thread that desperately needed to be handled. Many fans were displeased with the author for introducing it so suddenly, having shown no sign of Dumbledore’s sexuality in the actual books. This didn’t provide real representation.
With Fantastic Beasts, the opportunity finally came to fix this oversight. The first two movies proved to be disappointing in this regard, as the point is barely addressed. Dumbledore’s connection to Gellert is hinted at when he sees his lost lover in the Mirror of Erised, but there’s no real confirmation beyond that. If Fantastic Beasts 3 intends to reveal Dumbledore’s secrets, it should start there.

Dumbledore Defeated Grindelwald In A Legendary Duel
Grindelwald stole one of the Hallows, the Elder Wand, from the Eastern European wandmaker Mykew Gregorovitch.
From here, he dabbled more in the dark arts and rose to power. The details of his rise aren’t clear, but we do know that he killed a lot of people and established a prison, Nurmengard, for his enemies. He thought it was impregnable.
As Grindelwald became more infamous, Dumbledore faced him down. In 1945, in a duel for the ages, Dumbledore defeated him, leaving Grindelwald imprisoned in Nurmengard.
“In a list of Most Dangerous Dark Wizards of All Time, he would miss out on the top spot only because You-Know-Who arrived, a generation later, to steal his crown,” Rita Skeeter wrote. Voldemort might also be the more powerful wizard. He’s the only known person who ever broke into Nurmengard.
Members Of The Mclaggen Family Have Been At Hogwarts For Decades
In one scene, we see Dumbledore teaching a student how to duel in Defense Against the Dark Arts. When the class is interrupted by Ministry of Magic officials, that student boldly talks back to the man in charge.
Dumbledore tells the student to leave, calling him “McLaggen.”
In “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” Cormac McLaggen is a cocky, obnoxious student that tries to woo Hermione and replace Ron on the Gryffindor Quidditch team.
Fans of the book will know that the McLaggen family is “big in the Ministry” which may explain the boldness of Cormac’s apparent ancestor when speaking to Ministry officials.

Thestrals The Same Creatures Used To Pull The Carriages At Hogwarts Are Used To Transport Grindelwald
The opening sequence in “Crimes of Grindelwald” follows government officials attempting to transport Grindelwald from New York to Europe.
Presumably because cross-continental Apparition is highly dangerous, they choose to transport him in a carriage pulled by Thestrals. These winged horses made their debut in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” when Harry is finally able to see them they are visible only to those who have witnessed death.
Hogwarts employs a loyal flock of Thestrals to pull the carriages to the gates of the castle when students arrive each year.

Who Is Aurelius Dumbledore
In the last minutes of the movie, Grindelwalds followers decamp to Nurmengard, the prison that Grindelwald builds for dissenters and eventually becomes his own jailhouse. There, Grindelwald reveals that Credence is in fact Aurelius Dumbledore, Albus Dumbledores brother.
We dont yet know why a secret Dumbledore brother has never been mentioned before in the Harry Potter universe or how the Dumbledore baby ended up on the boat to America.Rita Skeeter would be disappointed to learn she hadnt dug up all the dirt on the Dumbledores.
Grindelwald offers one impressive piece of evidence: He tells Credence that a phoenix is said to appear to Dumbledores in times of need, and a phoenix does, indeed, appear to Credence. Could this possibly by a young Fawkes?
If Credence is, indeed, a Dumbledore, that means that Albus Dumbledore had two Obscurial siblings. Grindelwald feels that Credences power and perhaps Dumbledores guilt over Arianas fate will be his most powerful weapon against the great wizard.

What About The Textbook
Newt writes about his journey across five continents discovery new species – 85 magical species to be exact.
The textbook is available to read, but doesn’t relate directly to the movie – it provided the idea though.
Due to the books format, Warner Brothers had to come up with a way to bring it to life.
Rowling went back to the drawing board and fleshed out the characters she had already mentioned in the Potter universe.
The result was an original storyline – as well as the connection to the Harry Potter books and movies.
New ‘fantastic Beasts’ Character Has Major Ties To ‘harry Potter’s Voldemort
The introduction of young Albus Dumbledore isn’t the only major connective tissue that will tie Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald to the original Harry Potter series, as the final trailer for the film has revealed the hidden identity of its new characters: Nagini.
Fans of Harry Potter will recognize Nagini as the name of Voldemort’s serpent/Horcrux, who eventually kills Severus Snape. However, in the new Fantastic Beasts film, Nagini is still a human being who can transform into a snake at will, and she’s played by actress Claudia Kim.
Warner Bros. and the film’s producers have kept the character a secret until now, as the trailer not only revealed the character’s name, but also showed her transforming into a snake. While speaking to EW about the new footage, Kim talked about her new character, saying that she isn’t the evil being that appears in the Harry Potter films.
“It will be so interesting to see another side of Nagini,” Kim said. “You’ve only seen her as a Horcrux. In this, she’s a wonderful and vulnerable woman who wants to live. She wants to stay a human being and I think that’s a wonderful contrast to the character.”
Sadly, no matter how hard Nagini tries to fight her fate, we all know that she eventually takes on the form a serpent permanently.
“She does feel sometimes it’s not controllable,” the actress said. “She is bound to transform at some point to a beast so she feels this pressure that the clock is ticking.”

Is Fantastic Beasts Linked To Harry Potter How The Movies Relate
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald picks up the story, but how is it all linked to Harry Potter – here are your questions answered
- 17:50, 15 Nov 2018
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is the latest addition to the new J.K Rowling franchise.
Before you get stuck back into the wizarding world, you may be wondering how the movies all relate and whether Fantastic Beasts and Harry Potter are linked.
The simple answer is yes.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was based off a book of the same name written by Rowling in 2001.
The book was a textbook that Harry was supposed to have used in the first book, written by Newt Scamander.
How Does The Timeline Work Now
The Crimes of Grindelwald doesnt just introduce new faces to the Potter world it brings back some old friends in young forms that dont really make a ton of sense.
Chief among those is the appearance by a young Professor McGonagall, whose brief scenes in Crimes of Grindelwald dont fit the franchises established timeline. McGonagalls birthday had previously been worked out by fans at the Harry Potter wiki to be in 1935, eight years after Crimes takes place. McGonagall herself notes in Order of the Phoenix that she had only been teaching at Hogwarts for thirty-nine years this December in 1995, putting her start date in 1956. And yet Crimes has her as an adult, already teaching at the school in 1927. The obvious answer is that the Professor McGonagall in the film is an older relative again, Rowling loves to bring in recognizable names from different generations except that the films credits and Rowlings official script both indicate that the character in the film is Minerva McGonagall. Thats confusing, but its unlikely to be a mistake its more likely that Rowling is changing the timeline somehow.

In Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them Grindelwald Tries To Start A War
Let’s get some of the timeline straight.
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” takes place in New York City in 1926. Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s whirlwind summer at Godric’s Hollow took place around 1899. And we know Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald in a duel in 1945.
So by the time “Fantastic Beasts” takes place, Grindelwald is in his 40s and his power is on the rise. But he never became a significant part of British magical history, so his activities must have been mostly confined to Eastern and Central Europe.
At the end of “Fantastic Beasts,” Percival Graves the head auror at MACUSA and seemingly the second-most-powerful person in the American wizarding community turns out to be Grindelwald in disguise.
Throughout the film, Graves enlists Credence Barebone, an orphan who appears to be a No-Maj, into helping him find an Obscurial. An Obscurial is a hard-to-control magical force that’s unleashed when a wizard or witch doesn’t express their magical powers.
There’s a big showdown between Graves, Newt Scamander , and Barebone. Graves is brought to his knees, and Scamander performs a “revelio” charm to reveal him as Grindelwald.
“Will we die, just a little?” Grindelwald tells Scamander as he’s hauled away.
The Movie Should Finally Take Viewers To Ilvermorny
Considering the importance of Hogwarts in the main series, it seems strange that the American school of wizardry, Ilvermorny, has yet to make an appearance in Fantastic Beasts. The movies have made references to it, as Newt Scamander’s girlfriend, Tina, and her sister Queenie are both graduates of the school. With Fantastic Beasts 3, viewers may finally travel to Ilvermorny, as it appears that the Ilvermorny Charms professor, Eulalie Hicks, will play a bigger role.

Harry Potter And The Half
The most purely haunting of the Potter films, Half-Blood Prince juggles light and dark with remarkable grace. This is probably the funniest film of the bunch. It is often hilarious. And, its often somber and intense. It carries a PG rating, and the level of the threat and menace the filmmakers create within those bounds is just astonishing. Jim Broadbents masterfully played, multifaceted Horace Slughorn embodies much of what makes this installment so unique and memorable.
Half-Blood Prince also boasts the most gorgeous photography of the series, by French cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel. This is the only film in the franchise to receive a cinematography Oscar nod. Delbonnel went on to film the Coen Brothers achingly good-looking Inside Llewyn Davis.
A climactic battle at Hogwarts in the book is mostly cut the film series was saving its firepower for the final, explosive installment. This proved to be the right choice. Half-Blood Prince is the calm before the storm.
The best part: Tom Feltons conflicted, tormented Draco Malfoy becomes flesh and blood here. He is Harrys foil.
Harry Potter & The Goblet Of Fire
As with its literary counterpart, a lot of stuff happens in Harry Potter & The Goblet Of Fire. Voldemort’s resurrection, dragons, Cedric Diggory, the Yule Ball, the Triwizard Tournament, the Quidditch World Cup. The fourth Potter story is responsible for so many of the franchise’s most recognizable and referenced moments and gets away with being so tightly-packed by virtue of the effective slow build that culminates in Voldemort’s return. While it may not be the final Potter story, The Goblet Of Fire feels like the end of Harry’s “Phase 1,” bringing everything from the past 3 films together and beautifully setting up the bigger battle to come. The Goblet of Fire is the grand, bombastic centerpiece of the Harry Potter franchise, overflowing with ideas that broaden the wizarding world, and the movie adaptation revels in having so much rich material to play with.

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets
Some consider the first two Potter films to be the weakest, or even dismiss them outright, for being slavishly faithful to the books and too kid-friendly. That just isnt fair: these movies are splendid entertainment. Theyre worthy of a contemporary re-assessment. Sure, a few more inspired departures and unexpected artistic flourishes might have done some good, but with hindsight, director Chris Columbus inaugural pair did pretty much exactly what they needed to: they pleased the broadest possible audience while laying the groundwork for a series that would become increasingly dark, frightening and complex.
The longest of the entire film series at just shy of three hours, Chamber of Secrets clearly wasnt too long for even the younger fans to sit through, and the picture grossed a huge $879 million.
Film critic Roger Ebert adored this thing. He gave it his highest rating of four stars, and his 2002 review concludes with simply: What a glorious movie.
The best part: Kenneth Branaghs shady compulsive liar Gilderoy Lockhart is pretty hilarious, but the top highlight here is the spectacular final set piece in the titular chamber, with simply enormous sets and marvelous practical creature effects.
Spells Scarves And Schools
In addition to these larger connections to the Potter universe, there are a number of smaller references scattered throughout. For instance, when Newt first arrives in New York and is asked by Samantha Mortons Mary Lou Barebone if hes a seeker, he replies that hes more of a chaser, really. So fear not, Quidditch fans, there is a reference to the popular Potter sport in here. Moreover, during the films opening sequence in which we fly through a bunch of newspaperswhich, in a brilliant touch, have older technology in bringing them to lifetheres an article titled Soccer: The No-Maj Quidditch?
There are also, of course, the spells that Potter fans now know by heart. Newts opening sequence in the bank alone features the unlocking spell Alohamora, the stunning spell Petrificus Totalis, and plenty of apparrating.
Fantastic Beasts also features, albeit briefly, Minister of Magic Hector Fawley, who served the British office from 1925 to 1939. According to Rowlings official history, he did not take Grindelwalds threat seriously enough and was forced from office in 1939.
And finally, as we know Newt Scamander is a Hufflepuff , and while these sorting houses arent explicitly mentioned in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Newt is wearing a Hufflepuff scarf during his final scene in the movie, just before he boards the ocean liner back home to the U.K.
