Why Did Voldemort HAVE to Kill the Potters? – Harry Potter Explained

Harry, Hermione, and the other Muggle-raised witches and wizards are all taught at least basic math and reading skills before attending Hogwarts.

But once they get to Hogwarts, their Muggle education is done and they focus on magical classes like Transfiguration, Arithmancy, Charms, and others. During the seven years the students spend at Hogwarts, they are never taught advanced math, literature, music, health, or any foreign languages.

That would be tragic enough, but as far as we can tell, students from magical families dont go to any school at all until theyre 11 years old and receive their letter from Hogwarts.

Is this why Hagrid and Mr. Weasley have so much trouble with Muggle money? Is this the reason Ron needs Hermione to help him so often with his school work since he was never taught to properly write an essay?

So many questions, so little education.

The Killing Of Dumbledore By Snape

There were several speculations on the rationale behind the killing of Dumbledore by Snape. Experts eventually believed that Dumbledore wanted to preserve Malfoys soul and want Voldemort to trust Snape fully hence he asked Snape to go ahead with the killing.

Aside from killing Dumbledore, viewers believed that Snape must have been terrified by his past. That was why he approached Dumbledore when he admitted his atrocities and pleaded with him to preserve the Potters lives. In return for this gesture, Snape decided to pledge allegiance to Dumbledore alongside the Phoenixs order, which made him a double agent.

Being a powerful wizard, Snape used his power of Occlumency to hide his true identity and betrayal from Voldemort. He was, though, more loyal to the good side, his forage into the dark side put him in serious trouble against Voldemort on several occasions.

Did Snape Love Lily Potter

Snape love Lily when he was 9 years old after ending their friendship, he still loved Lily. The deep love Snape held for Lily all of his life also influenced his Patronus, which he took as the form of a silver doe. The love for Lily caused him as a spy of Voldemort to take revenge, as he killed her.

Why Did Voldemort Kill Harry Potters Parents? Fiction ...

Wormtail seemed depressed when he last saw Lily:

Wormy was here last weekend. I thought he seemed down, but that was probably the news about the McKinnons I cried all evening when I heard.

Harry speculates that Wormtail had already betrayed the Potters:

Wormy was here . . . Pettigrew, the traitor, had seemed down had he? Was he aware that he was seeing James and Lily alive for the last time?

We know that Dumbledore had James’s invisibility cloak:

James is getting a bit frustrated shut up here, he tries not to show it but I can tellalso Dumbledores still got his Invisibility Cloak, so no chance of little excursions.

We also know that he had been shown the cloak several days before Harry’s parents died.

“You have guessed, I know, why the Cloak was in my possession on the night your parents died. James had showed it to me just a few days previously.”

From this, we know that “last weekend” in the first quote must refer to the weekend before Harry’s parents were killed. Halloween 1981 was on a Saturday. Suppose Harry was right that the reason for Wormtail’s low spirits was that he had just broken Lily and James’s trust in him.

Perhaps Wormtail betrayed the Potters a week before Voldemort killed them.

But why?

Halloween is also a big Wizarding holiday.

There is a Halloween feast every year at Hogwarts, so it is not merely a Muggle holiday.

Voldemort Killed Snape Who Was Protecting Harry As A Father Even He Has A Sarcastic Character

Voldemort ordered to kill Snape because he thought that he was the master of Elder Wand an immensely strong and powerful wand that Voldemort deeply desired, as well as one of the Deathly Hallows. but in reality, Harry was the master of Elder Wand. After Snapes death, Harry ensured that his portrait must remain in Hogwarts and he honored him as a hero, despite having personal differences. Furthermore, Harry named his son Albus Severus Potter inspiring Snape and Albus Dumbledore who help Harry to kill the evil Voldemort.

Why Did Voldemort Want To Kill The Potters In The First Place

This may well be because Lily and James were some of Dumbledore’s most powerful and avid supporters as well as integral members of the Order of the Phoenix. So the biggest threat to V-Voldemort and his Order.

But why go through all the motions of murdering an entire family, even though they are cooped up in a hidden house and posing no immediate danger?

References preferred. But justified conjecture is also welcome.

Edit:I wrote this just after reading that Neville broke the prophecy. So I thought it might never be answered, which is why I asked the question.I now know the full reason.

  • 1I just wanted to point out the irony: the parents of Neville were Aurors and had defied Voldemort thrice as well. Now guess at the end of which month Neville was born: July. By going after Harry, Voldemort fulfilled the Prophecy with Harry as adversary, but Neville would have been in Harry’s place had Voldemort tried to kill Neville.Feb 21 ’14 at 12:27

  • One word The Prophecy

There was this prophecy:

Sybill Trelawney’s first prophecy, sometimes simply known as The Prophecy, refers to the prophecy made by Sybill Trelawney to Albus Dumbledore at the Hog’s Head Pub in 1980. It referred to a boy born at the end of July, who has the power to defeat Lord Voldemort and Lord Voldemort himself.

Here is the exact prophecy:

Why Did Voldemort Want To Kill Harry Potter

Years before Harrys birth and Lily and James death, professor Trelawney was just being interviewed for a job at Hogwarts when she uttered a prophecy we learn about in the books and movies that started the whole story:

The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

This could have been any child born at that time to parents who already fought Voldemort. But how did he find out about the prophecy? Severus Snape was still working for Voldemort during this time and was spying on Dumbledore. As Snape proceeded to report to Voldemort, he didnt even realize what he has started.

Like Voldemort, Harry was a half-blood, and his mother as well. Voldemort was keen on keeping the wizarding world free of half-bloods even if he was one himself. So killing James Potter wasnt really a part of his plan until it became necessary.

Only later do we find out how in love with Lily Potter Snape was. So he came to Dumbledore and offered him complete loyalty in exchange for protection for the Potters. It was something he could not ask Voldemort to do for him.

Dolores Umbridge Betrayed Her Own Family

J.K. Rowling, who penned the original Harry Potter book series, was pretty clear about why she created the character of Umbridge in the first place: she didnt want the concept of evil to be entirely black and white. She expresses this through Sirius Black , who, during Harrys fifth year, tells his godson that the world isnt simply divided into totally good people and nefarious Death Eaters making it clear that bad people can also work for seemingly virtuous causes like the Ministry of Magic.

In an essay on Wizarding World, Rowling relays how Umbridge turned on her own family in order to succeed within the Department of Magical Law Enforcement she hated her father because of his lack of ambition within the Ministry and ultimately got him fired, and lied about her Muggle mother to assume pure-blood status. As Rowling tells it, anybody who asked about Umbridges family would end up experiencing some kind of accident or misfortune, showing the lengths Umbridge would go to in order to cover up her real lineage or the fact that her father was a Ministry janitor.

Harry Potter And The Half

Voldemort does not appear in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, although his presence and actions are felt: he once again declares war, and begins to rise to power once more. He murders Amelia Bones of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, and begins to target members of the Order of the Phoenix, including Emmeline Vance.

Rowling uses several chapters as exposition to establish Voldemort’s backstory. In a series of flashbacks, using the pensieve as a plot device, she reveals that Voldemort was the son of the witch Merope Gaunt and a Muggle called Tom Riddle. Riddle abandoned Merope before their child’s birth, soon after which Merope died. After living in an orphanage, young Riddle met Dumbledore, who told him he was a wizard and arranged for him to attend Hogwarts. Riddle was outwardly a model student, but was in reality a psychopath who took sadistic pleasure in using his powers to harm and control people. He eventually murdered his father and grandparents as revenge for abandoning him. The book also discusses Riddle’s hatred of Muggles, his obsession with Horcruxes, and his desire to split his soul to achieve immortality. Rowling stated Voldemort’s conception under the influence of a love potion symbolises the coercive circumstances under which he was brought into the world.

What Was Draco Malfoys Patronus

J.K. Rowling says Draco doesnt have a patronus because he never learned the spell but I think its because he doesnt have any powerful happy memories to use. For Umbridge it was necessary to learn to cast a Patronus as she works in the Ministry. Remember: the Ministry worked with Dementors at that time.

What Powers Did Harry Have That Voldemort Didnt

Voldemort tried to kill Harry when he was just an infant. He should have killed him, but when Lily sacrificed herself to protect her son, Voldemorts curse rebounded and wounded him. It only left a small mark on Harry.

It is often said in the movies that it was the power of love. Now, having this world filled with power and magic and being saved by the mothers love is beautiful but kind of disappointing as an explanation. Perhaps the curse never hit Harry right due to Lilys protection, a charm, or Voldemorts wand. There are many theories.

It is also mentioned it was the kind of power Voldemort didnt expect it was old magic. Lilys sacrifice resided in Harrys blood ever since she has protected him. The killing curse rebounded and destroyed Voldemorts body. He had also had a part of his soul latch onto Harry the only living thing it found, and so another Horcrux was created. But this one was not planned.

Harrys parents were Aurors, they wanted to fight Voldemort and found themselves with a son in the middle of a war. So Lily Potter needed to take action and protect her family. This protection stayed with him which was seen after the last battle.

In Deathly Hallows, when Harry goes into the forest to fight Voldemort to sacrifice himself, he still has a part of Voldemorts soul within him without even knowing. But the protection from his mother is still there.

Harry Potter Theory: Why Didn’t Harry Use A Time Turner To Kill Voldemort & Save His Parents

A post shared by Harry Potter Film on Oct 1, 2019 at 12:18pm PDT

Voldemort was not able to kill Harry because Harry was the true master of the Elder Wand. So, therefore, Harry survived. Instead, Voldemort unknowingly made himself more vulnerable by trying to kill Harry since instead, he destroyed the Horcrux inside Harry. Harry ended up going to a kind of in-between place, where he meets Dumbledore and Voldemort is temporarily knocked out as well.

Harry is also still somewhat protected by his mothers love for him. And this is all Voldemorts own doing. When he was rebuilding his body during Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, he used Harrys blood to do so. Therefore, he took some of Lilys protection into himself.

    Magical Abilities And Skills

Rowling establishes Voldemort throughout the series as an extremely powerful, intelligent, and ruthless dark wizard, described as the greatest and most powerful Dark Wizard of all time. He is known as one of the greatest Legilimens in the world and a highly accomplished Occlumens he can read minds and shield his own from penetration. Besides Dumbledore, he is also the only wizard ever known to be able to apparate silently. Voldemort was also said to fear one wizard alone, Dumbledore.

On her website, Rowling wrote that Voldemort’s wand is made of yew, whose sap is poisonous and which symbolises death. It forms a deliberate contrast to Harry’s wand, which is made of holly, which she chose because holly is alleged to repel evil.

Rowling establishes in the books that Voldemort is magically connected to Harry via Harry’s forehead scar. He disembodies himself when his Killing Curse targeting Harry rebounds on him, leaving the scar on Harry’s forehead. In the books, and to a lesser extent in the films, Harry’s scar serves as an indicator of Voldemort’s presence: it burns when the Dark Lord is near or when Voldemort is feeling murderous or exultant. According to Rowling, by attacking Harry when he was a baby Voldemort gave him “tools no other wizard possessedthe scar and the ability it conferred, a magical window into Voldemort’s mind”.

It Was Both A Matter Of Pride And Of Believing Hes Most Capable

The Dark Lord knew that there had been many mistakes with regard to trying to kill Harry Potter, and he knew he had made mistakes in his methods of trying to kill him. However, he was fairly sure he knew what he had done wrong, and that he knew how to fix it.

Again, Voldemort looked up at the slowly revolving body as he went on, I shall attend to the boy in person. There have been too many mistakes where Harry Potter is concerned. Some of them have been my own. That Potter lives is due more to my errors, than to his triumphs.

The company round the table watched Voldemort apprehensively, each of them, by his or her expression, afraid that they might be blamed for Harry Potters continued existence. Voldemort, however, seemed to be speaking more to himself than to any of them, still addressing the unconscious body above him.

I have been careless, and so have been thwarted by luck and chance, those wreckers of all but the best laid plans. But I know better now. I understand those things that I did not understand before. I must be the one to kill Harry Potter, and I shall be. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Chapter 1

He also wanted to do it himself to prove that he was stronger than Harry Potter.

He therefore didnt want anyone else to kill Harry Potter and deprive him of this chance to show that he was indeed a stronger and more powerful wizard than Harry Potter, which he could not do if someone else was the one who killed Harry.
