St Mungo’s Hospital For Magical Maladies And Injuries

St Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries is a hospital within the Harry Potter universe. Medics at the hospital are not called doctors, but are known as Healers and wear lime-green robes. Founded by famous wizard Healer Mungo Bonham, St Mungo’s is located in London. It was established to treat magical maladies, injuries or illnesses endemic to the Wizarding World. To enter the premises, one has to step through the window of what appears to be a derelict department store called Purge & Dowse Ltd. The exteriors of the hospital are red-bricked and dirty, which is the complete opposite of the interiors. Inside, everything is very neat and looks exactly as a hospital should. There are six floors. The emblem of St Mungo’s is a magic wand crossed with a bone. This is the hospital where Arthur Weasley is sent after he was attacked by Voldemort’s snake, Nagini, in the Ministry of Magic and Minerva McGonagall is hospitalised from severe stunning when Hagrid is forced out of Hogwarts. During one visit, Harry and company happen across Neville Longbottom, who has come with his grandmother to visit his parents in the long-term care ward. They also find former professor Gilderoy Lockhart there, still suffering from the effects of a backfired Memory Charm.

General Notes On Harry Potter Book Collecting

As with any kind of collection, the better condition the more valuable it is. Signed pristine copies of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone are obviously going to sell for much higher than cheaper copies. Certain books in the series may also have limited editions that make them more valuable, sometimes referred to as deluxe editions.

Additionally, youre looking for a hardback version. Every Harry Potter fan knows that the books were released in both paperback and hardback, but its generally the hardbacks that rack up the big muggle bucks. Finally, its all about finding a first edition copy. The first print run of any series will be inherently more valuable than later editions.

So, if your old Harry Potter book is the first edition, in good condition, is a hardback, and even better, signed by JK Rowling youre off to a magical start.

The Magical Congress of the United States of America is the magical body in charge of governing the wizarding population of the United States of America. It is led by the President of the Magical Congress of the United States of America. Unlike the No-Maj United States Congress, which is divided into a House of Representatives and a Senate, the MACUSA is unicameral. The MACUSA is located within the Woolworth Building in downtown New York City and spans hundreds of stories.

Newt Scamander visited the building in the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, when he was brought in by Porpentina “Tina” Goldstein for threatening the Statute of Secrecy by using magic in front of Jacob Kowalski, a No-Maj.

Its Hard To Remember Harry Potter Before The Franchise Became A Phenomenon

In 2016, when Scholastic released the script book for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, its publication was accompanied by all the theatricality weve come to associate with Harry Potter releases: midnight launch parties, embargoes, and a furious black market for spoilers. Its easy to forget, in the face of all the hoopla, that when Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone came out 20 years ago, it was just another book on the Scholastic Book Fair tables.

Sure, even then the book had high production values. Scholastic had shelled out $105,000 for American rights to the title about 10 times the average and the publisher wanted to recoup some of its costs. While the books British sales had been healthy, there was no indication at that stage that this particular book would become a beloved international bestseller.

But Scholastic had high hopes. So it invested in the production design, which including an eye-catching and soon-to-be-iconic cover. Rowlings editors pushed her to let them alter the original title, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, by taking out philosopher to make the book more appealing to children.

The company developed a reasonably aggressive marketing campaign no midnight release parties, just standard bookselling tricks like paying for the book to be displayed on the front tables at Barnes & Noble.

Still, this was nothing out of the ordinary. It was a budget on the high end of normal.

A Guide To Collecting Harry Potter Books

The Harry Potter series only began in 1997 and yet J.K. Rowling’s books have become highly collectible. AbeBooks has sold hundreds of copies of Rowling’s books at high prices, including a first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone that sold for $37,000. One simple guideline to collecting Potter books: anything signed by JK Rowling has significant financial value. A book signed by one of the illustrators is much less valuable.

Harry Potters Popularity Completely Changed The Publishing Industry And The Effect Spilled Over To Hollywood

Here are just two of the ways Harry Potter changed publishing, and how those changes affected the rest of pop culture:

1) The books made it possible to publish long works aimed at children. Prior to Harry Potter, the accepted wisdom was that kids didnt have the attention span to read long books. And anyway, the thinking went, kids werent buying their own books. Their parents were paying for everything, and they would never be willing to pay an extra dollar or two for a longer book, with its extra printing and binding.

But after Harry Potter became an unstoppable cultural force, and it was clear that fans would keep buying thebooks no matter what, it started to expand. The last four volumes of the series are all doorstoppers that clock in at well over 700 pages each.

Publishers and childrens writers took notice. Booklist found that middle-grade novels expanded 115.5 percent between 2006 and 2016, the decade in which the Potter novels were at their longest.

The Outsiders reinvented young adult fiction. Harry Potter made it inescapable.

2) Harry Potter made childrens literature an unstoppable force. Before Harry Potter, childrens literature was often considered an afterthought. Sales were falling. Children, analysts would say wistfully, just werent reading anymore.

Petunia comes to his door and wakes him with a shrill voice. Harry is trying to think about the dream he had been having. It was about a flying motorbike, and he thinks he has had the same dream before. Aunt Petunia tells him to make some bacon, as she wants everything perfect for Dudley’s 11th birthday. Harry dresses into a pair of Dudley’s old clothes and goes into the kitchen, where the table is covered in Dudley’s presents.

All Hogwarts students live in one of four residences: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin, with each house having its own team for Quidditch. The houses are in a yearlong competition with one another to acquire the most points, which are earned by success in Quidditch games and given by teachers for academic achievement and lost for student infractions, in order to win the House Cup awarded at the end of the year.

The first-years wait in an antechamber while McGonagall checks to see whether it is time yet. The Hogwarts ghosts glide into the room by mistake while debating whether to offer Peeves another chance.

After a brief mental discussion with the hat in which it tries to suggest Slytherin to him, the hat places Harry in Gryffindor. Harry is pleased to find that Ron joins in Gryffindor with him. Draco Malfoy is placed in Slytherin.
