What Happens In Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince

Don't Miss

Tropes Exclusive To This Book Or At Least Especially Prominent:

First Time Watching “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” (Movie Reaction)
  • Acquitted Too Late:
  • Sirius Black is finally found innocent of the mass murder every wizard thought he committed, as Fudge tells the British Prime Minister during the first chapter. Too bad he’s already dead at this point.
  • Morfin Gaunt, whom Voldemort framed for his own triple murder of his Riddle relatives. Dumbledore found evidence Voldemort was the real culprit, but Morfin died in Azkaban before the verdict could be overturned.
  • Likewise, Voldemort also framed a house-elf named Hokey for poisoning her mistress with the same methods he used to frame his uncle. The Ministry didn’t bother investigating the situation any further because she was a house-elf.
  • Acting Unnatural: Hermione attempts to act casually in Borgin and Burkes, and immediately gets noticed.
  • Actually, I Am Him: Harry doesn’t realise he’s talking to the Half-Blood Prince until he tries to use one of the Prince’s own spells, at which point the Prince brags about his identity to a distraught Harry.Snape: You dare use my own spells against me? It was I who invented them I, the Half-Blood Prince! And you’d turn my inventions on me?
  • Added Alliterative Appeal: Chapter 11 is titled “Hermione’s Helping Hand”.
  • Adult Fear: Narcissa has it pretty bad after Voldemort decides to send her son on a likely Suicide Mission.
  • Agony of the Feet: A gnome bites Freds ankle while he pulls up carrots it gets turned into the angel on top of the Christmas tree.
  • The Alcoholic:
  • Alliterative Family: Marvolo, Merope, and Morfin Gaunt.

    Differences From The Book

While at the middle of the series in length, the film Half-Blood Prince did add or change events in the literary canon. The book begins with a scene involving the Muggle Prime Minister. Yates and his crew debated over this scene, as well as the character Rufus Scrimgeour, but gave up the beginning of the movie to events described but not seen in the book. Yates thought it would give the audience a feel for what the Death Eaters were doing if they showed the collapse of the Millennium Bridge rather than simply describe it . As with Goblet of Fire, the Dursleys were cut, which Steve Kloves did to “break the pattern”. Further background of Tom Riddle was removed, such as the Gaunts because they felt it more important to concentrate on Riddle as a young boy, and an additional action scene at the Burrow was added to keep with the tone of the franchise. Yates felt that they needed “an injection of jeopardy and danger” and that without it there was too much comedy and lightness. A small battle scene at Hogwarts which happened during the end of the book was also cut Heyman commented that it was removed to ” repetition” with the forthcoming adaptation of the Battle of Hogwarts in Deathly Hallows. Dumbledore’s funeral was removed as it was believed it did not fit with the rest of the film.

    Alcohol Drugs And Other Substances

    Harry Potter and the Half

This movie contains some use of substances. For example:

    • Harry, Ron and Hermione sit in a tavern drinking.
    • Professor Slughorn holds a party. We see Hogwarts students dressed as waiters serving wine glasses filled with an undefined liquid.
    • Ron eats a box of chocolates laced with a strong love potion and acts as if he is high on love.
    • Professor Slughorn gives Ron a pick-me-up, which turns out to be laced with poison.
    • Hagrid and Professor Slughorn drink alcohol from large mugs, singing and behaving in a drunken rowdy manner. Hagrid passes out, leaning back in his seat with his mouth open and snoring.

He did not usually lie in bed reading his textbooks that sort of behaviour, as Ron rightly said, was indecent in anybody except Hermione, who was simply weird that way.

Imperiused Katie Bell touching a cursed necklace

Harry finds a couple of spells scribbled on the Half-Blood Prince’s textbook. He tries one of them in his dormitory, but points his wand at Ron by mistake, which results in Ron hanging by his ankle from the ceiling. Later that day, Harry, Ron and Hermione go to Hogsmeade, where they witness Katie being cursed after touching a strange necklace. Remembering seeing the same necklace in Borgin’s shop, Harry voices his suspicions of Malfoy to ProfessorMcGonagall, but she, like Ron and Hermione, rubbishes his theory, stating that Malfoy did not go to Hogsmeade as he had a detention with her, and that there is no proof that he bought the necklace.

    Draco The Reluctant Death Eater

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (The Movie)

Dracos days of being the name-calling, stereotypical school bully seemed a thing of the past by year six, when he joined the Death Eaters. How far hed come from making Potter Stinks badges.

He was assigned a terrible task by Lord Voldemort, and the usually arrogant and swaggering Draco seemed more subdued. In a shocking reveal, Harry learnt that Draco had been tasked with the murder of Dumbledore. A more shocking twist, perhaps, was that Draco couldnt do the deed. He might have been a bit of a git sometimes, but Draco proved hes no killer.

    The Lightning Struck Tower

    • When returning from the cave, Harry and Dumbledore appear on High Street in Hogsmeade, where they encounter Madam Rosmerta , who warns them that the Dark Mark has appeared over the Astronomy Tower. Harry and Dumbledore borrow her broomsticks and head up there. In the film, Harry and Dumbledore Apparate there directly. There is a dark, uneasily tranquil feeling conveyed as views of various parts of the school are shown, as though something bad would happen at any moment. However, the Dark Mark is not cast over the school until after Dumbledore’s death.
    • Harry is not frozen by Dumbledore as in the book, rather, Dumbledore instructs Harry to go and hide below, and not to speak or be seen by anyone. Harry hesitantly oblidges and goes down to the floor below the top of the astronomy tower looking up through floorboards at the events. In the book, he remains unnoticed the whole time, while in the film, Snape catches Harry in the tower, and persuades him to stay silent, before going upstairs to kill Dumbledore.
    • In the book, Amycus Carrow finds Draco with Dumbledore, and he pressures Draco to kill Dumbledore. In the film, while Amycus is still present, it is Bellatrix Lestrange, who is not among the Death Eaters present in the book, encountering Draco and pressuring him to kill Dumbledore.

Voldemort Might Not Be In The Book But He Still Has Something To Do With The Plot

Here is the one reason Prisoner of Azkaban is filler, and Half-Blood Prince isnt. Even though Voldemort isnt in the books, he is why the plot goes as it does.

Prisoner of Azkaban, meanwhile, had nothing to do with Voldemort. All it did was get rid of Scabbers so he could go groveling to his new boss. And give Ron a cool new pet after what happened with Scabbers. Ron acts like a hard-ass, but he has a soft spot when it comes to his pets. I always thought he did Hagrid a disservice by not continuing with his class.

Voldemort wasnt directly involved in Half-Blood Prince either. He appears in Dumbledores Pensieve, but he stays absent in this book. However, its his command of Draco Malfoy that keep the plot going.

Voldemort told Draco if he didnt kill Dumbledore, Voldemort will kill Draco and his whole family. Draco spends the entire book trying to figure out how to get rid of Dumbledore and save his family. His mother finds Snape to perform the Unbreakable Vow so that if Draco fails, Snape will do the deed for him. And thats how we get the line Snape kills Dumbledore.
