Bridgerton Repeats A Weirdly Specific Harry Potter Story Detail

Bridgerton repeats an obscure detail from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince that involves actor Freddie Stroma and a love-triangle trope.

Bridgerton repeats a rather odd detail from Harry Potter with actor Freddie Stroma. The two series are almost as different as can be, but they have at least one notable thing in common: they both take place in the United Kingdom and were, therefore, cast with primarily British actors to play primarily British characters. Its no surprise, then, that at least one actor would appear in both franchises.

Stroma appears in both Bridgerton season 1 and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. In Bridgerton, hes the chivalrous and charming Prince Friedrich and in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Stroma plays Cormac McLaggen a self-absorbed and handsy Gryffindor who competes with Ron for both the position of Keeper on the Quidditch team and the affections of Hermione Granger. But despite being two very different characters, they have something specific in common in addition to the fact that they are both played by Stroma.

The show is based on the book series of the same name, written by Julia Quinn, and revolves around two families during the season,.

This was an annual period where elite families would host formal events to introduce their children to society and find them a suitable partner.

But while weve already binged the whole season in a few days, some fans are just noticing that one of the characters has a connection to Harry Potter.

In fact, Prince Friederich is played by Freddie Stroma, who also plays Cormac McLaggen.

Another fan then replied: “Oh my word”, while a third added: “And he was one of the Cinderella movies. I couldn’t take him seriously in Bridgerton because of the accent.”

Freddie appeared first in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, and then in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2.

Musical fans might also recognise him from 2012 film Pitch Perfect where he played a radio station manager at the local college radio station.

31-year-old Regé-Jean actually appeared in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows back in 2011 where he had a small unnamed role.

Freddie Stroma’s Harry Potter Character Had An Entire Book Arc That Never Made It To The Screen

Bridgerton Prince Friedrich played Cormac McLaggen in ...

Fans of both the Harry Potter books and films will likely be familiar with Stroma’s character. The nephew of Tiberius, an important official in the Ministry of Magic, Cormac’s personality in the books is defined largely by his arrogance and several other sour sides of general Gryffindor qualities. Largely a background adversary to two members of the series’ golden trio Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley in the books, Cormac’s plotline is driven by his desire to get back on his house’s Quidditch team, which he ultimately fails to do thanks to a single embarrassing moment that costs him his spot on the team forever. Just a year older than Harry and the rest of the crew, Cormac loses his chance to try out for the keeper position on the team after he’s resigned to bedrest following his ingestion of poisonous Doxy eggs on the basis of a bet.

When he’s finally able to try again, he’s now a foe for Ron, and when Hermione overhears him taking shots at the Weasley family before his tryout, she proceeds to place a Confundus Charm on him, affecting his performance. As a result, Ron remains keeper, and Cormac becomes a bitter reserve. That is until he gets a chance to play in a game against Hufflepuff after Ron gets sick. Leaning heavily into his arrogance, Cormac proceeds to boss the team around, fails to stop Hufflepuff from scoring on several occasions, and eventually knocks a bludger straight into team captain Harry’s skull, knocking him right off his broomstick.

He is also the younger brother of Samwell Tarly and Talla Tarly. His father disinherited Samwell and made Dickson his heir by forcefully making him join the Nights Watch under the threat of death. Bridgerton Prince Charming Freddie Stroma First Sparked Crushes As Cormac Mclaggen In Harry Potter

Cormac and Hermione

As Shakespeare once wrote, the course of true love neer did run smooth, and Netflixs Bridgerton took that to mean that lovebirds Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Bassett needed a charming obstacle to their happily ever after. Specifically, Freddie Stromas Prussian Prince Friedrich. A wholly original character created for the show, Prince Friedrich puts pressure on Daphne and Simons charade by providing the perfect match for the debutante.

However thats not the only reason why the Prince has caught the attention of Bridgerton viewers. He looks an awful lot like Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince character Cormac McLaggen.

Harry Potter fans will remember that Cormac McLaggen was a hot, but cocky, Gryffindor student introduced as an odious love interest for Hermione Granger in the series sixth book and film. Hes a foil for Ron Weasley and an overall annoying character albeit canonically cute.

So could Bridgertons utterly charming Prince Friedrich really be the same guy as Cormac McLaggen? Or is this a case of lookalikes? Is Cormac McLaggen in Bridgerton?

However Stromas best and biggest role was arguably on the cult hit unREAL. The Lifetime series was a blistering deconstruction of the reality romance competition shows like The Bachelor. Stroma played Adam Cromwell, a seemingly one-dimensional hot British suitor sound familiar? who wound up being decidedly a lot more interesting than all that.

In real life, Stroma is married to one of his main unREAL love interests, Johanna Braddy, and has an upper-second-class degree in Neuroscience. He is also the son of a Swedish father and German mother, making him an ironically on the nose choice for the German Prince Friedrich.

So, yes, that is Cormac McLaggen in Netflixs Bridgerton, but all signs point to the real life actor Freddie Stroma being way more like the Regency romances Prince Charming than Harry Potters hot doofus.

Cormac McLaggen

Cormac McLaggen is a conceited dude who tries out for Keeper against Ron. You know the type. We know he’s pretty full of himself just from the brief snippet of convo he and Ron have before the tryouts:

CORMAC: No hard feelings, Weasley, alright?RON: Hard feelings?CORMAC: Yeah, I’ll be going out for Keeper as well. It’s nothing personal.RON: Really? Strapping guy like you? You’ve got more of a Beater’s build, don’t you think? Keepers need to be quick, agile.

CORMAC: Ah, I like my chances.

Cormac’s “quick/agile” is no match for Hermione’s magical skillz, thoughshe ends up jinxing him to ensure that Ron gets the job. Ah, Ronmione.

However, after Ron cozies up to Lavender, Hermione goes to Slughorn’s Christmas party with Cormac. She definitely doesn’t seem to enjoy herself, though. Harry catches her hiding from her date early in the evening:

HARRY: Hermione, what are you doing? And what happened to you?HERMIONE: No, I’ve just escaped. I mean, I left Cormac under the mistletoe.HARRY: Cormac? That’s who you invited?HERMIONE: I thought it would annoy Ron the most.

Oh, the teen love drama. But anyway, Cormac’s turn in the Harry Potter movie universe is pretty brief.

Freddie Stroma’s Portrayal Of Cormac Mclaggen In Harry Potter Films Was Noticeably Different From The Book Character

Cormac was known for other things in the books, including infuriating Hermione while at a Christmas party and getting a little too cocky with some Death Eaters, but film fans never saw Cormac’s less than graceful exit from the team. That’s because the films’ never adapted it.

McLaggen makes his first franchise appearance in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and then appears again, this time with no lines, in the two-part finale of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The tension he’s famous for creating with the trio in the books is less clear on-screen as scenes featured in print were either never written or landed on the cutting room floor, much like many of the books’ smaller characters. Yet, the Half-Blood Prince still managed to give Stroma’s character his own memorably embarrassing moment, even if it wasn’t like the one from the book.

Audiences probably best know the actor for the funny and stomach-turning scene that landed his character in detention for a month. After Harry convinced Cormac that the dragon tartare he was eating was dragon testicles, the Gryffindor upchucked on the shoes of the one and only Professor Snape. And if you don’t recall that moment, know that while he was a real stinker in the books, he at least ended up on the side of Dumbledore’s army and survived in the final battle of the Second Wizarding War.

The Harry Potter Star You Didn’t Realize Is In Netflix’s Bridgerton

Regency romanceBridgerton, the first show to emerge from TV mega-producer Shonda Rhimes’ historic Netflix deal, is beyond a hit. According to Indiewire, who obtained the platform’s record-breaking December streaming data unverified by a third party, the period romance not only reached the number one spot in the Netflix top ten in the United States but 75 other countries. It also managed to break into the top 10 most-watched Netflix series in 189 out of 190 countries Netflix streams in. It’s quite a feat for any show on the platform, particularly a project that doesn’t pack the same recognizable star power of fellow December releases like George Clooney’s Midnight Sky, Ryan Murphy’s star-studded Prom, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, the Viola Davis-starring, Denzel Washington-produced adaptation featuring the final live-action performance of Chadwick Boseman.

While Stroma’s three-episode appearance is more or less brief in the scope of the entire series, his face might seem familiar, particularly to Harry Potter fans. Beyond his Pitch Perfect and Unreal roles, the Bridgerton actor also portrayed Gryffindor’s reserve keeper Cormac McLaggen.

Freddie Stroma And Johanna Braddy

Stroma is married to actress and fellow co-star in the series Unreal, her name, Johanna Braddy. The couple has been together since they tied the knot in 2016.

They began dating in the summer of 2015 before their engagement took place during a romantic weekend in Vancouver, Lower Mainland, British Columbia, Canada on 15th May 2016. The wedding was conducted at The Stables at Foxhall Resort and Sporting Club in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia on 30 December 2016.
