Deathly Hallows Part 1 gets a lot of flack for being too slow, but that’s exactly what makes it so scary. Thanks to the film’s gradual, tense buildup, viewers can feel the trio’s growing frustration as they hunt for Horcruxes as well as their horror when things go wrong. And because it’s Harry Potter, a lot of things go wrong.
The scene in which Nagini bursts out of Bathilda Bagshot’s corpse is nightmarish, but the worst comes in Malfoy Manor. Pinning her to the ground, Bellatrix tortures Hermione for information, before carving “Mudblood” into her arm. It’s tough to watch Hermione’s scream is genuinely uncomfortable, and because Harry and Ron are locked away, fans know there’s nobody to save her. This is the most hopeless moment in any Harry Potter movie, and for that, it’s terrifying.

There is no more surreal and disturbing scene than when Harry awoke in a white space full of cloudy vapour at some strange point between life and death. The place, it transpired, was Kings Cross, with its glittering glass roof high above him. It seemed empty, apart from the thumping and whimpering noises coming from the horrible creature he then encountered, which he instinctively wanted to comfort, but it repulsed him too much.
Dumbledore appeared in this dream-like space to explain how Harry was Voldemorts seventh Horcrux and to relate his own history with Grindelwald, during which Harry has to ignore the creature whimpering behind them. It is a revelatory moment in the stories, but the creatures presence makes it a strange and horrifying pause before Harry finally fulfils his destiny.
Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows
Its tough to judge a film that is self-admittedly half a story, but since its presented as a separate entry into the Harry Potter series, Deathly Hallows Part 1 must be evaluated as such. Book readers had their issues with the walkabout nature of the first half of the final book, so many were bracing for a somewhat sluggish film adaptation of those initial chapters. And while Deathly Hallows Part 1 is mighty compelling for the first hour or so , it definitely loses steam in its second half. This is due in part to the fact that Harry, Ron, and Hermione are on a directionless hunt, disapparating from one gorgeous locale to the next as they bicker amongst themselves. This character conflict is necessary to set up the emotional payoff of Deathly Hallows Part 2, but the act of watching a film that is almost all setup gets a bit monotonous.
And perhaps Deathly Hallows Part 1s biggest issue is just thatits a lot of setup for the finale without much room for payoff. Its a necessity, and director David Yates and screenwriter Steve Kloves handle it about as well as they could, but in one film they have to lay the foundation for all the wand business, move Ron and Hermione towards a point where they can express their romantic feelings for one another, introduce Dumbledores secretive backstory, explain the Deathly Hallows, and solidify the raised stakes leading up to the Battle of Hogwartsall without wrapping up a single one of these threads.

Im a little biased as they say, because this sixth film is based on one of my favorite books in the series, and yet seems to omit the very things that make the book pop. We get almost no origins of Voldemort material and very little in terms of Snapes backstory, instead saving that for one long montage in the final picture. Moreover, and this is not necessarily a criticism (because it works for this adaptation, but the film painfully telegraphs what in the book was a jaw-dropping plot twist. Even with an overindulgence in hormonal hijinks, this one still works as a visual differentiation while Tom Feltons Malfoy shines as a young man tortured by the implications of actually doing evil as opposed to merely being evil.

Lets Do The Time Warp: Time Travel
In the middle of these monsters, serial killers, and haunted houses comes the mind-boggling concept of time travel. Hermione is granted a time turner to help her get to classes, but it becomes a crucial tool in saving lives and confronting the monstrous. Like in many time travel narratives, as Harry and Hermione travel back in time, they realize certain occurrences were caused by future versions of themselves: stones that miraculously shattered glasses, strange howls that distracted the werewolf, and more. The Prisoner of Azkaban is already a strange film, using horror elements to depict the real terrors of growing up, hitting puberty, and realizing that the world often seems like its out to get you.
Adding in time travel not only elevates the fantasy, but also offers a way to somehow cope with the growing pressure on these young wizards. Unlike most time travel films, going back in time does save quite a few lives and allows both Harry and Hermione to fully tap into their bravery. Plus, in going back in time, they must face a werewolf head on, fight off hundreds of dementors, and save a serial killer. Hows that for a horror movie?

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2
As for the top two Potter films, Azkaban is the most inventive and artistically ambitious of the series, but Deathly Hallows 2 is the mightiest.
So many film series and trilogies have, to varying degrees, stumbled in the final outing, leaving fans nitpicking or altogether unsatisfied. The Harry Potter series ended with a streamlined crash of thunder. The filmmakers saw the potential here, and they made the right choices across the board to realize it its hard to imagine this turning out any better than it did. Thats what makes this the best Harry Potter film in the series.
This is an action movie, pure and simple, set piece after set piece. Each is excavated for maximum emotional impact after a decade of world and character-building. Its the kind of gigantically-budgeted-yet-heartfelt entertainment that only comes along every so often and reminds us of what were hoping for when we go to the movies.
Deathly Hallows 2 received universal critical acclaim and became only the ninth film in history to gross over $1 billion. It received three Oscar nominations, and frankly it deserved a Best Picture nod.
The best part: As in the first film, its Snape again. The poetic flashback in the Pensieve changes everything weve seen before. Snape is this epic series heartbeat.
Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the livingand above all, those who live without love.

For anyone with a phobia of spiders, Chamber of Secrets is a nightmare waiting to happen. He only appears in one scene, but Aragog still manages to be the scariest movie spider ever. The sight of this colossal talking arachnid slowly crawling out of a dark thicket isn’t easy to forget especially when he then commands other smaller spiders to attack Harry and Ron.
While this is the by far the movie’s scariest moment, the entire vibe of the movie is disturbing. The idea of an unknown creatures one that’s somehow worse than Aragog attacking students, paired with the eventual reveal of the Basilisk, makes for nearly three hours of terror.

As fans know, Harry and Hermione dont actually kiss, and their entire romantic entanglement is a vision produced by an evil magical object known as a Horcrux as a means torture Ron but that didnt change how weird it was for everybody on set. Radcliffe echoed his friends comments, saying, It was kind of weird.

Goblet of Fire marks a turning point in the series, with storylines really leveling up in maturity. The Triwizard Tournament exposes Harry to trials even he has never before experienced, while Cedric Diggory’s death robs him of the last innocence he has left .

The final Harry Potter movie is basically a string of explosive scenes. From the Battle of Hogwarts, to Harry’s sacrifice, audiences are rarely given a chance to breathe as the series races towards the finish line. This means that even though it’s probably one of the darkest entries in the series, it’s more stressful than legitimately scary.
But some scenes are still pretty frightening. There’s another Nagini jump scare when Voldemort commands her to kill Snape, despite him being one of his favorite Death Eaters. And when Harry wakes up in the space between life and death, the sight of Voldemort’s damaged, bloodied soul is one of his most terrifying scenes.

Howling At The Moon: The Werewolf
Perhaps the most traditional horror element of ThePrisoner of Azkaban is the inclusion of a werewolf. The not-so-subtly named professor Remus Lupin is new at Hogwarts and is revealed to be a creature of the night. But what is especially great about the films take on the werewolf is that this is not your typical wolfman covered in hair. Lupins werewolf is essentially hairless and has unnaturally long limbs. Think Gollum from Lord of the Rings, but as a wolf. His transformation isnt shied away from, either, as we see his face contort and elongate into a snout, and his clothes rip as his shoulders broaden. This is body horror lite, showing the painful and disgusting transformation rather than shying away from it.
On top of a werewolf already being scary enough, the fact that it is also a professor that has gained Harrys trust amplifies that fear. Lupin is trusted by Harry and well-liked by all his students, treating them as equals and preparing them for the ways of the Dark Arts. However, he himself harbors a dark secret that endangers himself, his students, and the rapport he has built with them. As soon as he transforms, there is nothing remaining of the human Lupin, no reminders of the human within. It is only the monster, full of bloodlust.
