Jk Rowling Says Hermione Should Have Ended Up With Harry Potter

In the Harry Potter books and films, there’s never much question that Hermione will end up with Ron instead of Harry. Although she and Harry share a warm friendship, they never seem to see each other in a romantic way, whereas she and Ron spend years bickering and flirting and getting jealous before finally ending up together in the last volume.

But while Hermione may not have had any doubts about her feelings for Ron, author J.K. Rowling admits she did. In an interview with Emma Watson, who played Hermione in the movies, Rowling confessed that she regretted having Hermione end up with Ron and that she should have put her with Harry instead. Read her comments after the jump.

Rowling explained, “I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment. That’s how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron.”

The author seemed very aware of the potential backlash from her fans. “I know, I’m sorry, I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that,” she added. “It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.”

Fans Think This Line Proved Harry Potter And Hermione Belonged Together

In popular works of fiction, rooting for your favorite characters to get together is only natural. It’s part of what drives fandom, and it’s an incredibly common response to any story where there are lots of attractive people. The trouble comes when those relationships don’t pan out, and fans are left wondering whether all of the signs they read into were wrong.

Harry Potter had plenty of obvious relationships to root for, including a strong contingent of fans who believed that Harry and Hermione were supposed to be together. As any fan who has completed the series knows, that ultimately wasn’t the case. Instead, Hermione and Ron wind up getting married, and Harry ends up with Ginny, Ron’s sister. Those pairings seemed odd to some readers, in part because of certain lines that seemed to hint at different pairings near the end of the series. For some fans, one passage in Half-Blood Prince really stood out as foreshadowing an eventual relationship between Harry and Hermione.

Everyone Loves A High School Sweetheart Story

Sometimes a high school sweetheart story is just really easy to root for, and Ronmione is one of those cases. Of course, not everyone needs to hook up with everyone else, but when you’re stuck in a castle with the same people for nine months out of the year, it’s not weird to think that those people will hook up. While most of us should never marry our high school sweethearts, it’s really cynical to think that these stories don’t exist or that we don’t have one on our hands.

Some people need to date around after high school to see what they really want, but there are some lucky people who find their person early on and realize what’s in front of them. So what if they would have eventually needed counseling according to J.K. Rowling? Many couples do!

They Don’t Get Jealous Of Each Other

We mentioned that Ron had his irrational jealousy moments, when he just lost control over himself. But that’s not enough to say that Harry is the better pick, we also need to test this aspect on him. And guess what? He passes! Harry, being the Chosen one, with his great popularity and fame in the world of magic, was never seen through that prism by Hermione. She didn’t care about any of those things and was friends with him for the person he is. Likewise, Harry was never jealous of Hermione because of her wits and the fact that she was the cleverest student of the entire school.

They Literally Argue Like A Married Couple

Throughout the books, Hermione and Ron argue like crazy. Their first major argument was all about feathers and putting the emphasis on the right syllable when they’re casting spells, and it was that argument that led to the solidification of their friendship.

In the second bookdespite their arguing and their annoyance with each otherRon is deeply affected by Hermione’s run-in with the basilisk. The only person who affects him more deeply than Hermione during this book is when his little sister is taken into the Chamber of Secrets proper. The arguments only get nastier as the two get older and realize that not only do they like each other, they actually get jealous when they express interest in other people and don’t know how to handle it. It takes a while for both of them to get a clue and to start actually making moves towards a romantic relationship, but war and a Horcrux drive them apart temporarily until they find their way back to each other. It’s all very sweet.

To anyone who had been following the series from the very beginning – it was quite obvious that Harry and Hermione were absolutely destined to end up together. Boy, was it a surprise when it started becoming apparent that it was actually Ron who had won the young lady’s heart. Some may have been disappointed, others were probably happy that things didn’t go as they would in absolutely any Hollywood flick, where the hero gets it all – including the girl. Well, he did get a girl, just not that one.

But what would it have been like, if things would have taken the traditional turn and Harry Potter would have got together with bookworm and faithful friend, Hermione Granger? Of course we cannot change the course of the story – especially since it’s long been written and completed. However, we can dream, right? We decided to fantasize a little and imagine just how different things could have been, should the two have ended up strolling hand in hand into the sunset, and just why that could have been a better ending.

Jk Rowling Has Said She Believes Harry And Hermione Should Have Ended Up Together

Should Hermione have ended up with Harry Potter instead ...

Although the ending she wrote featured Ron and Hermione getting hitched, even JK Rowling eventually confirmed the fan theory, saying that she may have made a mistake. “I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment. That’s how it was conceived, really,” the author said during an interview with Wonderland in 2014, via CNN. “For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron.”

They’re A Lot Like James And Lily Potter

Both Hermione and Ron share aspects of Lily and James’ personality, so it makes sense that the two would have a relationship that parallels Harry’s parents. As we all know, Ron and Hermione bicker like no one else when they’re not ready to acknowledge their feelings for each other which is something Lily and James Potter are no strangers to. Lily gets mad at James for being reckless the same way that Hermione gets mad at Ron for the same thing, and Ron brings Hermione out of her shell the same way James does for Lily.

There’s also the fact that Ron and Hermione essentially act as Harry’s chosen family over the course of the story, so they spend far more time together than just in school. This is how the Marauders were, and Lily ended up in this mix at the end of their time at Hogwarts.

They Would Have Made A Better Team

Just think about it. Harry Potter’s bravery, skill, determination – all of the things that make the boy with the scar on his forehead the star and most important personage in the books and movies. Pair that with Hermione’s unique, encyclopedic knowledge and brilliance. You have the absolute, master couple! They would be unbeatable together come Voldemort, come anyone who dare take these two on – they won’t stand a single chance. Hold on, though, they already are a team, you would say. But how much of a stronger bond they would have if they were more than just friends, huh.

The Author Herself Liked Them Together

Hello? Who else could possibly speak more in favor of Harry/Hermione as opposed to Ronmione than J.K.Rowling herself, admitting they would have made a better couple? The bestselling author and person responsible for the series’ existence made this confession in an interview for Wonderland. She said that ‘distance has given her perspective’ and that she really only paired Hermione with Ron out of personal reasons and not for the sake of the plot or reasons related to literature. Rowling apologized if she broke any hearts, but she said she was being thoroughly honest. Furthermore, Emma Watson, who portrayed Hermione and was present at that same interview, agreed that she questioned whether Ron would have truly been able to make her character happy.

Hermione And Harry Would Never Have Worked

Top 10 Reasons Harry Should’ve Ended up with Hermione

Many people think that Hermione should have ended up with Harry, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Personally, I think Harry works much better when he ends up with Ginny, and it wouldn’t have been such a big deal if he never ended up with anyone. That sounds weird since he’s spent his life alone, but Harry’s personality would have made him suited to settling down later in life. He’s been on an adventure for his whole life, and more importantly, he’s the most adaptable of the Golden Trio and does well when he’s moving around.

While Hermione was going back to school, Harry would have been tackling his Auror career and putting that before his relationship. Knowing what we know about Ron, I could see him making sure he had a balance in his life, so he could prioritize his career and his relationship. On top of that, Hermione dated Krum, another famous guy, and that seemed annoying enough for her , so she wouldn’t do that again and would go for someone closer to home.

Meanwhile, Ginny’s lack of romantic dramatics makes her a perfect match for Harry because she anchors him. Hermione doesn’t do that for anyone but Ron.

Ron Has Jealousy Issues

Don’t get us wrong, this list isn’t about hating our favorite redhead. We love Ron Weasley just as much as the next person and are convinced that the series would be horribly crippled without him. But since he is the one who ended up paired with Hermione, and we’re trying to advocate Harry’s candidacy for that spot, it’s only fair that we compare the two. And let’s be very honest here: Ron has had his jealousy outbursts on several occasions throughout the years. And who wants to be stuck with a crazy jealous person? That’s right: no one. So, why not just agree that Hermione wouldn’t have to worry about provoking her significant other, if that other were Harry Potter.

Hermione Is A Better Match Than Ginny

This is probably beginning to look like a Weasley hate article, but we assure you, we’re only trying to look at things from an unbiased perspective. The above heading will probably resonate most with those fans, who choose to use the screen adaptations as reference. Let’s be reasonable: Ginny Weasley was a complete shadow of herself in the movies. What can we really say about her? Can we characterize her somehow? What made her unique from anyone else? In the books, she was kind of a cool kid and you could sort of justify her appeal to Harry, but nonetheless – she could hardly compete with Hermione.

They Intuitively Understand Each Other

This is probably the most intimate and sacred thing a couple could share. What could possibly be more romantic and meaningful than a bond so special that allows two people to understand each other without words? I mean, not even words are enough sometimes to make some people comprehend what the other wants, but we’ve seen plenty of example throughout the series where Harry and Hermione were able to guess each other’s intentions, when no one else could have even suspected them. Just take the time, when Hermione took Umbridge to the Enchanted forest with the secret plan to encounter some dangerous beings. Harry was onto her immediately and trusted her to fulfill her plan.

They Are Always Thinking About Each Other

JK Rowling Admits I Was Right All Along and Harry Should ...

This probably is tell-tale sign number one that someone’s in love. You don’t constantly have your friends in your thoughts and you aren’t worried about where they may be whenever they aren’t around you. But this has definitely always been the case with Harry and Hermione. And for goodness’ sake, who cries their eyes out, when one of their friends gets injured? We understand you’d be concerned, but weeping like it’s the end of the world? Come on, this never happened with Ron. And there was never as much worry involved when he was in trouble. Let’s just admit it was always obvious that Harry had something with Hermione that she and Ron will never have.
