The Really Useless/worse Than Useless Harry Potter Spells
81. Avada Kedavra
It’s used to kill people, it’s an Unforgivable Curse, and it was Voldemort’s favourite, so it’s going last. There’s probably a big philosophical debate we could get into about violent curses like this would this one have been okay to use on an evil dark wizard, for instance? but we’re going to take the tack that murder is bad and leave it there.
Yep, this is another Unforgivable Curse that Harry actually attempts to cast himself a couple of times, but nobody’s perfect, right? It’s also yet another spell that could land you in a cell with some Dementors .
We know what you’re thinking: Why is a spell that Harry Potter busts out in order to retrieve a horcrux so low down on the list of usefulness? Wouldn’t the whole wizarding world be a different place if Harry hadn’t used the Imperius Curse to sneak into Gringotts? Well, maybe. But if we’re looking at this thing objectively, an Unforgivable Curse which puts the victim under the caster’s complete control is both a) obviously super evil, and b) a good way to get yourself locked up in Azkaban for life.
Baddies use this one to conjure the Dark Mark in the sky. You don’t want to be a baddie, do you?
77. Brackium Emendo
74. Slugulus Eructo
This one covers an enemy in boils, which is very icky and very mean.
71. Locomotor Wibbly
Anapneo Would Be A Real Life Saver
Albus Dumbledore went to great lengths to bring Horace Slughorn back to Hogwarts for a second spell as a professor, such is his pedigree as a wizard. The potions master takes great pride in the fact that he taught several students who went on to achieve great things, Harry Potter’s mother among them. He decides to reopen the so-called Slug Club for admission upon his return to the school, inviting a handful of promising youngsters to a dinner party where he can assess them in person.
Harry is of course on the guest list , and so is Hermione Granger. Also in attendance is a Ravenclaw student named Marcus Belby, whose uncle invented the Wolfsbane Potion. He seems more interested in the food than the conversation, however. Belby shovels so much down that he ends up choking, though that’s nothing to panic about in a world where Anapneo exists this spell instantly clears the airway of the target. It’s the Heimlich maneuver without the hard work.
Spells And Harry Potter

The Etymology Of Harry Potter Spells
Harry Potter is a world of strange and magical language, filled with words that sound alien and new, but in fact have their roots in the real world. Spells are no exception, with the origins of many incantations harking back to Latin terms and phrases some spells translate pretty directly, while others have been carefully crafted and assembled from fragments of other languages. Its a fascinating example of how language changes and evolves, so heres a look at five of our favourite stories behind some of the wizarding worlds most famous spells

Every Harry Potter Spell Used In The Movies And Books
It can be hard to keep track of all the different spells used in the world of Harry Potter, so this guide is full of every spell a wizard could need.
The world of Harry Potter is full of complicated magic systems, vast family trees, and countless magical creatures. It’s these features that make the world so enchanting for fans. Harry would not have made it very far in his adventures if it weren’t for his knowledge of spells .
The spells used in the movies come straight from the books themselves. However, they are many spells the Golden Trio used in the books that did not make it into the movies.
Number Of Official Translations
It has been difficult to accurately determine with any degree of certainty exactly how many languages Harry Potter has been translated into. As best as can be determined , The Philosopher’s Stone has been officially translated from the original English into 79 other languages, the most recent being Maori in November 2020 preceded by Kazakh and Yiddish, in February 2020. Both Bloomsbury’s and J.K. Rowling’s sites stated in 2017 that the books have been translated into 79 languagesâhowever, their count would now likely be 88 with the subsequent release of:
- and a second Mongolian translation
However, it has been argued that number actually represents the number of plus the original English. The number of authorised translations is not equal to the number of languages because there have been multiple authorised translations into the same language. Specifically, there have been two separate translations into each of: Korean, Macedonian, Mandarin Chinese, Mongolian, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian and Turkish . English is often included in the list of translations even though technically it should not be. Thus: 88 â 1 English â 8 double-translations = 79. It is also worthwhile to emphasise that not all seven books have been translated into these 79 languages.
Note that in some countries, such as Spain and India, the book has been translated into several local languages sometimes the book has been translated into two dialects of the same language in two countries .

The Spell Which Returns Voldemort To Corporeal Form In Chapter 32 Of Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire
Okay its another potion. The fact that my 2 of my 3 best spells in Harry Potter are potions is quite telling.
The Dark Lord must perform a ritual to return himself from a withered husk to his full corporeal body. There are three crucial ingredients to be poured into the bubbling cauldron.
- Bone of the father, unknowingly given
- Flesh of the servant, willingly sacrificed
- Blood of the enemy, forcibly taken
This is a dark ritual. You need enemies, a servant who is taking care of your husk-form, access to the grave of your father and willingness to defile it. In the fiction, Voldemort also believes the ritual will be strongest with his biggest enemy, Harry. The wording of the ritual feels Shakespearean, and therein archaic and secretive.
I wouldnt expect players to use this dark spell in a roleplaying game, unless they are meant to be baddies. However the general format of get these three hard-to-obtain things so you can do the epic magic works well.

The Sound Of Silencio
Working on animals as well as humans, the Silencing Charm is guaranteed quiet time.
It’s perfectly okay to use on kids , though it does take a practiced hand. Hogwarts students are taught this spell during their fifth year, and it’s known to be a particularly tricky one to master. Get it wrong, and it can have the opposite effect the target begins to swell and screech.
Hermione Granger found this out the hard way in Professor Flitwick’s Charms class. The students were given frogs and ravens to practice the Silencing Charm on, and, in a very non-Hermione moment, the brightest witch of her age messes up, turning Harry’s frog into a balloon animal. Silencio is thought to be the spell that Harry accidentally used non-verbally on his menace of an aunt, Marjorie Dursley, who started to swell and float after unfairly and unwisely berating him in “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”
Harry Potter Spell List Starts With L

- Liberacorpus: the nonverbal countercurse to Levicorpus.
- Locomotor: causes an object to rise above and move when the caster commands.

The Harry Potter Spell That Would Be The Most Useful In Everyday Life
J.K. Rowling invented hundreds of different spells as she penned the “Harry Potter” series, breaking them down into charms, hexes, jinxes, and curses. Many of these spells and their accompanying incantations have become part of the pop culture lexicon.
Collectively known as the Unforgivable Curses, the Imperius Curse , the Cruciatus Curse , and the Killing Curse are among the most well known, favored by Lord Voldemort and his followers. All three spells are pretty useful if you’re a Death Eater, but outside of those circles, usage is rare. The same can be said of the equally famous Patronus Charm which Harry Potter used to fend off the Dementors of Azkaban while it looks pretty, it is essentially useless to your regular, law-abiding wand user.
If Rowling’s Wizarding World was actually real, the spells that would be used most regularly are the ones that make everyday life a little or, in most cases, a lot easier. After perusing the author’s catalog of spells, here is a list of the most useful incantations.
The Amplifying Charm Would Make You Impossible To Ignore
If you grew up in a big family, you’ll already know just how valuable the Amplifying Charm would be in everyday life.
It was a favorite of Albus Dumbledore during his time at the helm of Hogwarts, particularly during the Triwizard Tournament, where he utilized the spell in his unofficial role as the competition’s emcee. Ludovic Bagman, Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports, also used it when he opened the 422nd Quidditch World Cup in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” putting his wand to his neck and addressing the crowds .
The Amplifying Charm would eliminate the need for microphones and megaphones, and it would no doubt help a few parents out, too. This spell can also be used on inanimate objects like the TV or, in Molly Weasley’s case, the radio. The mother of seven used Soronus to crank up the volume on her wireless when the nattering of her French daughter-in-law, Fleur Delacour, began to grind on her in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.”
Diffindo The Severing Charm
A kitchen knife is mostly used for preparing food at best however, a homicidal maniac can use it to seriously injure, and even kill people. Diffindo is also quite similar to it.
When casted, Diffindo will cause a precise, clean cut upon the contact area. It was invented by Delfina Crimp as a tool to cut clothes and thread more easily. And just like a kitchen knife, Diffindo can become seriously dangerous as it can easily cut living target, like animals and human.

The following Harry Potter Spells Guide will take you through the spells that you can perform with special interactive wands at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter Diagon Alley and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter Hogsmeade.
Lets start at Diagon Alley which is my favorite park. This newer area of Wizarding World of Harry Potter has some of the best interactive wand spell locations.
Avada Kedavra The Killing Curse
And here we are, the final deadliest Harry Potter spell and also the most used Unforgivable Curse by Voldemort and the Death Eaters. The Killing Curse, just like what its name implies, is a curse which can kill a person instantly without feeling anything. When casted, the users wand launches a magical bolt which will instantly kill the target.
Based on what we can see from the movie series, it seems that this curse doesnt do anything to the targets body. Instead, it extracts the targets soul the very essence of every living being, leaving the body behind without soul. Despite its destructive capability, this curse isnt necessary the cruelest among Harry Potter spells. It quickly delivers death to the target without feeling anything therefore, at least the target will die without enduring pain for a long period. That said, it is still worthy to be the most dangerous among Harry Potter spells since it kills people so quickly. Just imagine if this spell falls into a homicidal maniac , there will be no living man in this world.
And thats it folk! Those are the top 10 most dangerous Harry Potter spells! For the meanwhile, stay tune for more news in the future!
