The Man With Two Faces

First Time Watching Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 (2010) Film Reaction & Review -(1/2)
  • In the book, Voldemort kills Quirrell by leaving his head, causing him to die. In the film, Harry kills Quirrell by grabbing his face, causing him to turn to dust.
  • In the book, when Harry touched Quirrell, Quirrell’s skin blistered wherever Harry touched. In the film, when Harry touched his hand, Quirrell’s hand turned to stone and crumbled. Also, when Harry grabbed his face, it made his whole body demolish and Voldemort escaped. This is what knocked Harry out.
  • In the book, Harry Potter is unconscious when Quirinus Quirrell dies, while in the film, Harry watches Quirrell die. This creates a plothole with his ability to a see a Thestral in the film version of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, since Harry could not see Thestrals until he saw Cedric Diggory die. This could also be due to the film being released before the Order of the Phoenix book was published, and so the film crew wouldn’t have known about what would happen in later books.
  • Poppy Pomfrey is omitted but there is an unknown nurse who appeared before Albus Dumbledore took a bite of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans. The unknown nurse could be Poppy Pomfrey being played by an uncredited actress in a non-speaking part.
  • Once again, Nicolas Flamel’s wife Perenelle is not mentioned when Harry asked about Flamel dying.
  • In the book, Hagrid gives Harry a of his family at the hospital while in the film version, he gives it to him at the end of term when about to board the Hogwarts Express.
  • Thursday Night Previews: Fantastic Doesnt Quite Live Up To Its Name With $875 Million

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them pulled in $8.75 million during its midnight shows last night. Thats good, but a little lower than expected and not even the best of the fall so far. It was beaten by Doctor Strange, which earned $9.4 million just two weeks ago. Worse still, Fantastic Beastsreviews have fallen to 74% positive. Thats still good for a blockbuster release, but it is the lowest in the Harry Potter franchise and will likely hurt the films box office performance over the weekend. It should still make over $80 million this weekend, but it will be close. We might have to revise that prediction lower tomorrow when we have Fridays estimates. More…

Weekend Estimates: Fantastic Beasts Makes Fantastic

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is doing everything Warner Bros. could have wished for this weekend, posting a lively $75 million opening in the US, hitting $143.3 million internationally for a global opening over $200 million, and getting a A CinemaScore that should give it positive word of mouth going into Thanksgiving. For a franchise reboot, thats a lot of reasons to be happy, although its opening is well below the openings enjoyed by the original Harry Potter franchise. The worst of those, Chamber of Secrets, opened with $88 million over three days .More…

Differences Between Philosopher’s Stone And Sorcerer’s Stone Films

Harry Potter World on Twitter: " Happy 58th Birthday, Chris ...
    • Five different takes were necessary to replace the words Philosopher’s Stone with Sorcerer’s Stone in the American version of the film. When the two DVDs were compared side by side it was noticed that in every case but one, only a slight difference in synchronisation was noticed. The most noticeable difference was when Hermione was reading from the book she had taken out of the library for a “bit of light reading”. The words on the page were changed from Philosopher’s to Sorcerer’s and her fingers, while straight in Philosopher’s they are bent in Sorcerer’s .

Home Market Releases For March 12th 2019

Its not a good week on the home market. There are some big releases, like Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, but none of them are good. There are a couple of contenders for Pick of the Week, but the The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends: The Complete Series DVD is a re-release at a more reasonable price, while it is worth waiting to get the The Miseducation of Cameron Post: Special Edition Blu-ray. In the end, I went with a late screener, The Forbidden Photos Of A Lady Above Suspicion: Collectors Edition Blu-ray. It is definitely the best bet for fans of Giallo and / or Film Noir. More…

    The Letters From No One

    • Dudley appears to know about Hogwarts, as he stares worriedly at Harry like his parents do. In the books, Dudley does not know about magic when Harry gets his letter.
    • Harry does not get Dudley’s second bedroom until the second film, with the latter film implying that the Dursleys supplied Harry with the room after the First Year.
    • The scene where Harry and the Dursleys go to a random hotel to get away from the letters was omitted from the film, so instead they went straight to the hut.
    • Because of this, Dudley’s line of “Daddy’s gone mad, hasn’t he?!” was moved to immediately after Uncle Vernon declares that they are going to move far enough away to ensure that the owls can’t find them. In the book, Dudley says this line only after Vernon pauses driving long enough to do a glance around to see if any owls are following them on a bridge.
  • The scene with Harry and the Dursleys using the rowboat of the toothless old man to get to the hut is omitted Therefore, the old man is also omitted from the film, but he appears in concept artwork only.

Daily Box Office: Ralph Is Breaking Record Books

Its Thanksgiving long weekend, which means many studios are closed and are not reporting official numbers. However, one of the studios that is reporting numbers is Disney and they are reporting record-breaking numbers. Ralph Breaks the Internet earned $18.5 million on Wednesday, which is significantly more than either Coco or Moana managed the previous two years. In fact, this is more than Frozen managed during its record-breaking wide expansion back in 2013. This films reviews are great and it earned an A minus from CinemaScore, so it should have good legs and could top Frozens $93.59 million five-day opening. In fact, some studios think it has a real chance of $100 million during its five-day opening. Im not that bullish, but even if it only earns $90 million over five-days, it will still be a monster hit and way more than we predicted. More…

Harry Potter: Peter Otoole Almost Replaced Richard Harris As Dumbledore

20th Anniversary of Harry Potter: Director Chris Columbus On Wanting to Return to the Franchise

OToole ultimately turned the role down due to his friendship with Harris, director Chris Columbus reveals

Richard Harris in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone ” Peter O’Toole

The Harry Potter franchise nearly had a different legendary actor in the iconic role of Albus Dumbledore. While casting for 2001s Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone successfully built out the ensemble with renowned performers like Alan Rickman and Maggie Smith, Richard Harris fell ill after completing the second film in the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and abruptly passed away in October 2002.

That left some giant shoes to fill, not only in terms of Harris talent but with regards to a key character in the Potter franchise going forward. And Peter OToole, the eight-time Oscar nominee most famous for the title role in the 1962 classic Lawrence of Arabia, very nearly donned the robes of the Hogwarts headmaster.

Chris Columbus, who directed Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone and Chamber of Secrets and produced Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, told TheWrap how it all went down.

Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2

Was it satisfying finally seeing Voldemort break up into little pieces and disintegrate like a Disney witch? Yes. Was it satisfying seeing Ron and Hermione finally lock lips? Not if you’re a Harmony shipper. Still, this movie managed to tie the bow on one of the biggest and best film franchises of all time. It’s fraught with tension and danger for our heroes, many of whom don’t make it to the end. A satisfying final chapter.

Harry Potter Cast Return To Hogwarts To Mark 20th Anniversary Of First Film

Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson discuss where the magic started in HBO Max special

The original cast of the Harry Potter series will be reunited 20 years after the first film was released.

An HBO Max special titled Return to Hogwarts will be released on 1 January 2022, the network has said.

Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson will join American film-maker Chris Columbus to discuss the films and explore their creation in depth.

The excitement is palpable as they prepare to take their fans on a very special and personal journey, through the making of these incredible films.

It comes as Radcliffe told a BBC documentary, also marking 20 years since the first film, of his joy that many people watch the Harry Potter films when they are hungover.

The 32-year-old said: The time in most peoples lives when they discovered it meant that it has an incredibly important place in a lot peoples childhoods, and they still feel very protective over it.

One of my favourite fates that we could never have ever imagined for the Harry Potter films but that I have been told by several friends is that they are fantastic when people are hungover and feeling really crappy about themselves.

They will just watch back-to-back a few movies and it just takes them to a place of warmth and comfort.

That is so lovely to me. That is the real-world effect that a film can have on someones life. I think that is great.

Analysis: Why Havent There Been Fifty Shades Of Grey Copycats

This weekend the Fifty Shades franchise is expected to surpass $1 billion in total worldwide box office with the release of the final installment, Fifty Shades Freed. All that income comes from films with an estimated combined budget for all three films of $150 million. The last time Hollywood saw this kind of success with an erotic drama/thriller, it created an entire subgenre that ate its way all through the 90s. Yet, after this year, it seems Valentines Day weekend will be left without a Fifty Shades replacement. So why the hesitancy from Hollywood to step up to the challenge this time?

Home Market Releases For March 28th 2017

Its a good week for Pick of the Week contenders, as there are seven such releases on this weeks list. Unfortunately, none of them really scream out as The Pick of the Week. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is by far the biggest, but it is only out on Video on Demand right now, while Hidden Figures is the best, but again, it is only on VOD this week. There are also a couple of busted Oscar-bait films, Archer: Season Seven is only getting a DVD release, while the previous seasons came out on Blu-ray. In the end, I went with Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XXXVIII, partially to celebrate the return of the show. More…
