Harry Potter Movies In Order Of Chronological Events
Now, here’s where things get slightly tricky. The Fantastic Beasts films are prequels, so they take place decades before the events of the original Harry Potter movies.
Those take place during Harry’s time at Hogwarts, so each book/movie corresponds to a school year. The final two movies split the final book and school year.
Here’s the list of Harry Potter movies and the year in which they are set:
Fantastic Beasts 3 is likely to be set right after the second film in that series and before the events of Sorcerer’s Stone.
And if the Harry Potter stage play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, is made into a movie, it would fall at the end of both the release order and chronological order since it’s set circa 2017.
Chapter 1: Beauxbatons And Durmstrang
- “Longbottom, kindly do not reveal that you can’t even perform a simple Switching Spell in front of anyone from Durmstrang!”
- McGonagall about the upcoming visitors
Durmstrang’s Submarine Ship
Early the next day, a concerned Harry sends a letter to Sirius claiming he is fine and that Sirius won’t have to return to Britain. Over the next couple of weeks, Harry fights off his concerns for Sirius while waiting for Hedwig to get back. In Defence Against the Dark Arts, Moody has his students practise resisting the Imperius Curse. Only Harry is able to resist it, despite slightly bruising his knees in the process it takes him a couple more tries before he can completely resist it. During Transfiguration, Professor McGonagall explains to her fourth-year students, as she assigns them extra homework, that this is the time for them to start preparing for the O.W.L. examinations, which will occur at the end of their next year.
On 30 October, Harry again hears Fred and George Weasley talking: this time, he hears that they are talking about sending a letter to a certain person. The trio talk with the twins about the Triwizard Tournament, and Hermione brings up house-elves. Fred and George suggest she should visit the Hogwarts Kitchen just to see for herself how happy they are, despite Hermione’s insistence that they are being brainwashed.
Chapter 1: The Four Champions
- “Dumbledore, you know perfectly well you did not make a mistake! Really, what nonsense! Harry could not have crossed the line himself, and as Professor Dumbledore believes that he did not persuade an older student to do it for him, I’m sure that should be good enough for everybody else!”
- Professor McGonagall angrily defending Dumbledore
Harry the Fourth Champion
Since Harry neither submitted his name nor asked an older student to do so, the assembly is dumbfounded. Harry himself is feeling very confused as he heads into the room where the champions are waiting. Although protests issue from the heads of the other schools, it is decided that the Goblet of Fire has spoken and that changes must be made accordingly. While many think Harry has somehow circumvented Dumbledore’s age-restricting barrier, Moody suggests that perhaps someone entered Harry’s name under a fourth school to ensure he would be included in the competition, hoping he might not survive the perilous tasks.
Crouch reveals that the First Task is on 24 November and the champions have until then to figure out what it is and to prepare for it. The champions are forbidden to receive any help from anyone else. They are told that they will learn the details of the Second Task after completing the First Task. They will also be exempt from the end-of-year exams due to the tournament.

The Tragic Story Of What Happened To Nevilles Parents Is Largely Skipped Over In The Films
Neville Longbottom plays an increasingly significant role throughout the book and film series, but his backstory, specifically what happened to his parents, was largely left out of the movies.
Alice and Frank Longbottom only appear in the films in a photograph that Sirius shares with Harry in Order of the Phoenix.
However, in the fifth book, Harry, Ron, and Hermione accidentally meet Nevilles parents in their hospital room at St. Mungos Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. After they were attacked, captured, and tortured during the First Wizarding War, they both experienced severe mental-health complications that kept them from reentering society or raising their son.
All of this serves as a key motivation for including Neville in the final fight against Voldemort and provides readers with a more in-depth look at the character, but the scene wasnt included in the fifth movie.

Price Wars And Other Controversies
Asda, along with several other UK supermarkets, having already taken pre-orders for the book at a heavily discounted price, sparked a price war two days before the books launch by announcing they would sell it for just £5 a copy. Other retail chains then also offered the book at discounted prices. At these prices the book became a loss leader. This caused uproar from traditional UK booksellers who argued they had no hope of competing in those conditions. Independent shops protested loudest, but even Waterstones, the UKs largest dedicated chain bookstore, could not compete with the supermarket price. Some small bookstores hit back by buying their stock from the supermarkets rather than their wholesalers. Asda attempted to counter this by imposing a limit of two copies per customer to prevent bulk purchases. Philip Wicks, a spokesman for the UK Booksellers Association, said, It is a war we cant even participate in. We think its a crying shame that the supermarkets have decided to treat it as a loss-leader, like a can of baked beans. Michael Norris, an analyst at Simba Information, said: You are not only lowering the price of the book. At this point, you are lowering the value of reading.

A second voice orders the stranger to kill Cedric, which he does, leaving Harry frozen with shock and horror. Harry is then dragged to a large marble tombstone with the name Tom Riddle engraved upon it. The stranger then tightly binds Harry to it with thick black cords from arm, wrists, legs, neck to ankle, and has him gagged.
Unable to escape, Harry recognises the stranger as Peter Pettigrew due to the missing finger on his right hand. He also notes that Pettigrew is carrying what appears to be a deformed infant. Pettigrew takes some of Harry’s blood, bone dust from Tom Riddle Snr’s grave, and puts them in a cauldron. He then cuts off his own right hand, at the orders of the strange creature, and places it in a cauldron. The creature is revealed to be none other than Lord Voldemort himself, and the potion made by Pettigrew returns him his powers stronger than before.

Casting The Roles Of Harry Ron And Hermione
In 2000, after a seven-month search, lead actor Daniel Radcliffe was discovered by producer David Heyman and writer Steve Kloves seated just behind them in a theatre. In Heyman’s own words, “There sitting behind me was this boy with these big blue eyes. It was Dan Radcliffe. I remember my first impressions: He was curious and funny and so energetic. There was real generosity too, and sweetness. But at the same time he was really voracious and with hunger for knowledge of whatever kind.”
Radcliffe had already established himself as an actor in the 1999 BBC television production of David Copperfield in which he played the title role’s childhood years. Heyman persuaded Radcliffe’s parents to allow him to audition for the part of Harry Potter, which involved Radcliffe being filmed. Rowling was enthusiastic after viewing Radcliffe’s filmed test, saying she didn’t think there was a better choice for the part of Harry Potter.
Also in 2000, the then unknown British actors Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were selected from thousands of auditioning children to play the roles of Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, respectively. Their only previous acting experience was in school plays. Grint was eleven years old and Watson ten at the time they were cast.
How The Timeline Differs Between The Harry Potter Books And Movies
The Wizarding World that author J. K. Rowling created for the Harry Potter series is ever-expanding. Subsequent works to the original series like the Fantastic Beasts franchise and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child fill out the world, exploring different time periods and locations where different generations of wizards existed.
But some newcomers to Harry Potter might wonder why the original Harry Potter books are set in one decade and the film franchise is set in another.
According to her website, Rowling came up with the idea for the book series in 1990 while sitting on a delayed train. She set the date for the books to match up with when she began writing them, which wound up being the same year as when the book series began, 1991. It wasnt clear at the time if or when the book would actually be published so she used her present time period.
If youve read the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, youll notice it takes place in 1991. Harry was born in 1980, making him 11 when he starts his first year at Hogwarts. But that book was released in June 1997 and its United States version, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, was released in 1998. Confused yet? Well, Rowling herself confirmed in a tweet that 2017 was the year Harry and Ginnys son, Albus Severus, was about to start his first trip to Hogwarts 19 years after Harry left, making 1998 his seventh and final year.

A Chronological Guide To Watching The Harry Potter And The Fantastic Beasts Movies
Do you want to know how to watch the Harry Potter movies in order? Doing so is meant to be a magical experience and we mean that literally.
Starting off with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone , the film series follows every one of his seven years of studies. That includes learning from iconic wizards such as Professor Dumbledore, Professor McGonagall and Professor Snape as well as a procession of unfortunate Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers.
For a movie franchise based on a best-selling novel series, it’s unsurprising that the Harry Potter films are as popular and beloved as their paper counterparts. The big-budget adaptations of JK Rowlings Wizarding World are up there with the most successful movie series in history, too, with only Star Wars and the making more money at the worldwide box office over the past two decades.
That, then, makes the eight films essential family viewing, especially during the festive period, with new generations of kids continuing to discover the adventures of Harry and his best friends, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.
But, these days, watching the Harry Potter movies in order is a little more complicated than it used to be. Warner Bros. has also released two movies in its Fantastic Beasts prequel film series , which are set in the 1920s and introduce a young Dumbledore along the way.
