It Was Built In Scotland Away From Muggle Eyes

The tenth century was a dangerous time for witches and wizards, who were being persecuted by Muggles hostile to magic. Therefore, Hogwarts was built somewhere in the Scottish Highlands, and concealed with numerous charms and spells to make it impossible for Muggles to trespass. For instead of an enormous school, any passing Muggle would only see ruins and signs warning them of danger.

The Castle Itself Was Huge And Complex

Hogwarts has a long history of ancient magic, and Albus Dumbledore admitted that not even he knew all of its secrets. Indeed, much about the design and construction of Hogwarts remains a mystery. Did the founders implement the Anti-Disapparition Jinx? Where did the Room of Requirement come from? Why did they build a school next to a dark and dangerous forest?

“In sixth grade, we read a set of novels and the essential understanding is how individuals can overcome adversity through the help of community,” Huq says. “I wanted students to see how the students at Hogwarts and the adults in Hogwarts found their community whether it was their biological family or their chosen family.”

More than a literature lesson

The Harry Potter books are a natural choice for English and literature classes, but that hasn’t stopped STEM teachers from finding connections for their students.

Kelsey Hillenbrand teaches middle school math in Evansville, Ind. Floating candles like those in the Great Hall hang from her ceiling along with moving portraits for an immersive experience.

Hillenbrand acknowledges that part of the nature of math is to learn concepts and then review and practice them, but for at least three times during the year, she goes one step further with her classroom theme.

“When we were studying fractions and decimals, I cover all of my desks with butcher paper to look like the wooden tables that you see in Snape’s classroom and we had potions class.

Charming Snakes: Reptile House London Zoo England

Harry first discovered his gift for talking with snakes, in Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, at London Zoo‘s Reptile House. In the scene, Daniel Radcliffe speaks to an enormous Burmese python, but the enclosure filmed is actually home to the venomous black mamba, recognisable for its distinctive inky black mouth.

But dont leave it at that. London Zoo is the worlds oldest scientific zoo, dating back to 1828, and offers all sorts of incredible animal experiences. Once youve seen the snakes, immerse yourself in a butterfly paradise or get up close to big cats in the Land of the Lions.

More On The Founder Helga Hufflepuff

Helga Hufflepuff was the only one of the Hogwarts founders who didnât require any special characteristics for students. She also accepted everyone with zero preferences. As a result, this is much different than the other three founders.

According to Pottermore, Helga was very skilled at food-related charms. It is also noted that a lot of the recipes in the Hogwarts kitchens come from Helga.

Helga was responsible for the school using house-elves in the kitchen. This is because it would give them a safe place to work.

During the 18th century the Deans of Durham often held another position in the south of England and after spending the statutory time in residence, would depart southward to manage their affairs. Consequently, after Cosin’s refurbishment, there was little by way of restoration or rebuilding. When work commenced again on the building, it was not always of a sympathetic nature. In 1777 the architect George Nicholson, having completed Prebends’ Bridge across the Wear, persuaded the dean and chapter to let him smooth off much of the outer stonework of the cathedral, thereby considerably altering its character. His successor William Morpeth demolished most of the Chapter House.

In 1794 the architect James Wyatt drew up extensive plans which would have drastically transformed the building, including the demolition of the Galilee Chapel, but the Chapter changed its mind just in time to prevent this happening. Wyatt renewed the 15th-century tracery of the Rose Window, inserting plain glass to replace what had been blown out in a storm.

In 1847 the architect Anthony Salvin removed Cosin’s wooden organ screen, opening up the view of the east end from the nave, and in 1858 he restored the cloisters.

There is also a statue of William Van Mildert, the last prince-bishop and driving force behind the foundation of Durham University.

Iâd seen them seven years before and theyâd bubbled around in my memory. When Hogwarts occurred to me as a name for the school, I had no idea where it had come from.JK Rowling

Hogwarts Was Founded By Two Wizards And Two Witches

At some point in the tenth century, four of the greatest witches and wizards that ever lived founded Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Their names were Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, Helga Hufflepuff and Salazar Slytherin. As The Sorting Hat told us, their reason for doing so was because they had the selfsame yearning, to make the worlds best magic school, and once they did, each created their own house to represent a personality and skill that they wanted to nurture. Gryffindor students embodied bravery and chivalry Ravenclaw, intelligence and wit Hufflepuff, loyalty and fair play and Slytherin, the values of being sly and cunning.

A Catholic School Removed Harry Potter Books From Its Library Warning That Readers Risk Conjuring Evil Spirits

Before the new school year began, the Rev. Dan Reehil turned to several exorcists for advice.

Reehil, a pastor at St. Edward Catholic School in Nashville, was worried about the heretical lessons that students could learn from the Harry Potter books, he wrote in a Wednesday email to faculty members that was obtained by WTVF. At the advice of the exorcists he consulted, who shared his concerns, he purged the series from the schools library.

These books present magic as both good and evil, which is not true, but in fact a clever deception, he explained. The curses and spells used in the books are actual curses and spells which when read by a human being risk conjuring evil spirits into the presence of the person reading the text.”

In an emailed response to parents obtained by the station, Rebecca Hammel, the superintendent of schools for the Catholic Diocese of Nashville, explained that the schools library had moved over the summer, and books that werent checked out often or werent deemed age-appropriate for students at the prekindergarten-through-eighth-grade school were purged. The schools pastor, out of an abundance of caution, decided that the Harry Potter series, which has received attention over its presentation of magic and witchcraft, should also be removed, she wrote.

Class Sizes And Duration

Hogwarts classes are held in different locations within the castle and grounds. Class usually last for one and a half hours, even if they are shared by two Houses. Higher years often have “double” classes, which means they last three hours Potions classes quite often are double, because potion preparation can take longer than a single class would have time for. There are three class periods, typically, in the morning, and three in the afternoon.

Class size is typically thirty students, according to information in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. This gives a total student population of about 840, or 210 in each House.

Grades classification refer here are only given in the student’s essay works, quizzes, assignments, homework and examinations.

Harry Potter Homeschool: Hands

I volunteered in the school library when my son was in second grade.

I loved it.

The weekly trip to the library was kind-of a big deal for my sons class and he loved seeing me there in the middle of his school day.

The first time I really understood the allure of Harry Potter was in that dark, little library, when a sweet girl, with a scar drawn on her forehead in red marker, stumbled up to the check-out desk with a gigantic stack of thick books.

Immediately, the librarian came over and said, Helen, you can only check out one Harry Potter book at a time. Pick one and then next week, you can return it and check out another one.

Helen started crying.

But I neeeeeeeed them all.

Seven years later, I feel little Helens pain.

Both of my boys, my husband and now, by sheer proximity, me, are complete and total fans.

So I guess I shouldnt have been at all surprised when I asked what we should study this summer and my youngest said he wanted to go to Hogwarts instead.

At first, I laughed. But then, the more I thought about it, the more the ideas starting flowing.
