The Top 100 Bestselling Books Of All Time: How Does Fifty Shades Of Grey Compare

Fifty Shades of Grey is Britain’s best-selling book ever – according to the publishers at least – but how does it compare?

Publisher Cornerstone announced this week that the erotic novel has sold in excess of 5.3m copies in print and ebook more than The Highway Code or Dan Brown‘s The Da Vinci Code.

The book has remained in the top slot in the UK bestseller lists for the 16th week running. The second and third books, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, are also selling fast, with UK sales of 3.6m and 3.2m respectively. Combined UK sales for the trilogy are in excess of 12m copies, with rights to the book sold around the world and published in languages including Albanian, Chinese, Russian, Serbian and Vietnamese.

But is it right? Proving sales across platforms independently is very difficult as there are so many outlets. Nielsen Bookscan, which collects the retail sales information from point of sale systems in more than 31,500 bookshops around the world, does not provide collated sales across e-books and physical books, which means we’ are reliant on publishers.

So, bearing that in mind, Nielsen have given us their top 100 list of all-time Uk book sales. It shows volumes of each book, its publisher and genre. So, how does Fifty Shades compare?

It’s not top on this list: that’s got Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code at number one, followed by the Harry Potter novels.

Bookstores were legally forbidden to open boxes containing the books until midnight. Reception And Influences In Modern Era

Harry Potter play tops French bestseller list... in English

In the late 19th century, Hong Lou Meng‘s influence was so pervasive that the reformer Liang Qichao attacked it along with another classic novel Water Margin as “incitement to robbery and lust”, and for smothering the introduction of Western style novels, which he regarded as more socially responsible. The eminent scholar Wang Guowei, however, achieved a new method of literary interpretation in an innovative and path-breaking 1904 essay which invoked the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer. Wang called the novel “the tragedy of tragedies”, in contrast to the prosperous endings in most earlier drama and fiction. Wang further proclaims the novel as “orthy of being considered as the one great masterpiece in the realm of Chinese art.”

During the Cultural Revolution, the novel initially came under fire, though it quickly regained its prestige in the following years. Zhou Ruchang resumed his lifework, eventually publishing more than sixty biographical and critical studies. In 2006, Zhou, who had long distrusted Gao E’s editions, and the novelist Liu Xinwu, author of popular studies of the novel, joined to produce a new 80 chapter version which Zhou had edited to eliminate the Cheng-Gao emendations. Liu completed an ending that was supposedly more true to Cao’s original intent. The novel continues to be influential on contemporary Chinese poets such as Middle Generation’s An Qi, who paid homage to it in her poem To Cao Xueqin.

In December 2005, Rowling stated on her web site, “2006 will be the year when I write the final book in the Harry Potter series.” Updates then followed in her online diary chronicling the progress of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with the release date of 21 July 2007. The book itself was finished on 11 January 2007 in the Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh, where she scrawled a message on the back of a bust of Hermes. It read: “J. K. Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in this room on 11 January 2007.”

Rowling herself has stated that the last chapter of the final book was completed “in something like 1990”. In June 2006, Rowling, on an appearance on the British talk show Richard & Judy, announced that the chapter had been modified as one character “got a reprieve” and two others who previously survived the story had in fact been killed. On 28 March 2007, the cover art for the Bloomsbury Adult and Child versions and the Scholastic version were released.
