How Do You Drink Butterbeer

Butterbeer from Harry Potter | How to Drink

This boozy butterbeer recipe is best served in a big frosty glass, just as theyd serve it in the Three Broomsticks. Think something like Oktoberfest, but with more wizards and less maidens.

To chill your glasses beforehand, rinse them with cold water and place them in the freezer for two hours. By the time your butterbeer is ready, theyll be fully frosted and ready to go.

Theres something so satisfying about drinking a big beer from a tall frosty glass. Especially on a hot summer day!

The beer frosting effect on the top of the butterbeer is very important too. As great as this butterbeer tastes, the final look of butterbeers really counts. You want that proper Harry Potter experience when drinking your butterbeer.

So get some big glass mugs when serving your butterbeer. The type youd find at Oktoberfest a beer stein to be accurate. Or, in a tavern in England in the Tudor times.

You could even get a wooden tankard beer mug, for the full Harry Potter effect!

Tips For Making Thebest Butterbeer

  • Use golden color cream soda: It will create that golden brown look of the butterbeer drink.
  • Whipped topping: Make sure to beat your heavy cream to stiff peaks, so that it holds on its own, which will end up creating the perfect consistency for your Butterbeer.
  • Dont skip out on the fat: As tempting as it is to want to explore healthier options of our favorite guilty treats, this probably isnt the best recipe to find substitutes. The high-fat content in the heavy cream combined with the butter is going to give this drink the thickness you need for it to not just taste like soda with milk.
  • Make a perfect presentation: Transfer the cream into a zip-top bag. Cut the tip of the bag off at the 1/2-inch mark so that you can easily pipe the cream on top of the drink.

Is There Alcohol In Butterbeer

Butterbeer is described in JK Rowlings Harry Potter books as being a very popular beverage for wizards and muggles, with a rich smooth taste thats similar to butterscotch, but a little less sickly.

Still, many Harry Potter fanatics have always wondered is butter beer alcoholic?

Well, the answer is yes and no. It depends who you ask!

Theres definitely a hint in the Harry Potter books that butter beer contains a little alcohol. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Winky is described as becoming an alcoholic and getting hooked on the buttery beverage.

Winky is getting through six bottles a day now, Dobby whispered to Harry.

Well, its not strong, that stuff, Harry said.

But Dobby shook his head. Tis strong for a house-elf, sir, he said.

So, maybe in the Harry Potter books theres a small amount of alcohol in butter beer. JK Rowling may have taken inspiration from real buttered beer recipes, the kind that were served up in the taverns around London during medieval times. This old butterbeer recipe was made from beer, sugar, eggs, nutmeg, cloves and butter and was very low in alcohol.

Still, the kind served in Harry Potter World, Universal definitely doesnt have alcohol in it. Too many younger Harry Potter fanatics are desperate to try it!

What Does Butterbeer Taste Like In The Uk

So, Butterbeer is always a hard taste to describe being honest. Its incredibly sweet and it tastes like a Butterscotch Cream Soda with a whipped topping!

If youve ever tasted the amazing Frozen Butterbeer at Universal Studios, you may be surprised that the Butterbeer in the UK looks and tastes nothing like that.

Also, I found that the bottled Butterbeer served at the photographic exhibition tastes different than the Butterbeer that you can buy at the Harry Potter Studios Tour too!

As its served in a bottle here, you dont get the whipped topping like in Harry Potter Studios. But, it is still extremely tasty and fizzy. Its also served nice and cold which helps with tolerating some of the sweetness!

My chocolate frog cupcake was incredible FYI!

Harry Potter Fans: Make Your Own Butterbeer At Home

Butterbeer Archives

Pamela Fox | October 19, 2020

One of the most familiar items from the Wizarding World that Harry Potter fans will recognize is butterbeer, the beverage quaffed on numerous occasions by students at Hogwarts at places like the Three Broomsticks or the Leaky Cauldron pubs. While the books don’t really say what it is, it’s been assumed that it’s kind of a butterscotch flavored soft drink. If you visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios, you can’t escape butterbeer vendors who offer up the cold kind and even a hot version during the winter.

Their interpretation, which we’ve also enjoyed at the Warner Bros Studio Tour The Making of Harry Potter in London, is a sort of butterscotchy soda with frothy white foam on top. If you want to enjoy butterbeer at home, you don’t need to travel to Los Angeles or London, but just follow our simple recipe, which tastes remarkably like what we had there. It’s perfect for a treat while reading the books or watching a Harry Potter movie, and would be ideal for a Hogwarts-themed Halloween party.

My daughter experimented with several of the recipes out there on the internet to get this just right. While a lot of them have complicated formulas for homemade butterscotch flavoring, she found that store-bought butterscotch syrup or ice cream topping, like Smucker’s, worked perfectly fine and took a lot less effort.

What Does Butterbeer Taste Like

Butterbeer is a sweet drink that tastes like a buttery version of a vanilla drink topped with thick foam, like a latte or cold foam on top. Similar to a buttery version of cream soda.

The butterbeer recipe comes in a frozen version or regular topped with a tasty sweet foam all year long at the Wizarding World, but in the winter they have a hot version as well.

My version and Universal Studios contain no alcohol and are gluten-free. But only mine is dairy-free because they add a milk derivative to the foam and will not serve it without it.

What Kind Of Butterscotchsyrup Should I Use For This Recipe

Youll notice some brands have thicker butterscotch, while others seem to have a more liquidy syrup. While a lighter one will be easier to stir into your drink, youll probably find fewer uses for it outside of this recipe, so dont stress too much about what kind to get. If you opt for the thicker syrup, just make sure to stir it into your cream soda until it dissolves fully.

What Is Butterbeer Made Of

In the books, Butterbeer is made of just three ingredients: butterscotch, sugar and water. However, we muggles make it a little differently.

Theres actually more than one way to make a homemade Butterbeer recipe. Most have cream soda as the base and use some variation of the following ingredients: butterscotch syrup, caramel syrup, heavy cream, pure vanilla extract, rum extract, melted butter, butter extract and more.

Since Im all about the easy recipes, our DIY Butterbeer has just four ingredients: cream soda, butterscotch syrup, heavy whipping cream and powdered sugar.

While we like to make our whipped cream, you only need three ingredients if you use store bought. Thats all you really need because this recipe is seriously good and tastes just like the real thing! Why make it harder than it has to be, right?

What Are Butterbeers Six Different Forms At Harry Potter World

Homemade Butterbeer | Harry Potter

First off, I have to break the news to you that neither this popular drink at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter nor their flavored butterbeer desserts are vegan or dairy-free.

It can be found in many different forms, including cold, frozen, and hot versions but to have a vegan version you need to make this recipe.

  • Frozen Butterbeer is kind of like an ice slushy with a foam topping
  • Cold Butterbeer is more like a vanilla soda with a foam topping
  • Hot Butterbeer served only in the winter and similar to a hot butterscotch
  • Butterbeer Soft Serve Ice Cream they swirl the flavor in
  • Butterbeer Potted Cream a thick pudding
  • Butterbeer Fudge well, fudge that tastes like our favorite drink
  • The most popular form is the Butterbeer Soft Serve Ice Cream and if you make my frozen version it will be like a butterbeer and a milkshake had a magical baby!

How Can I Make An Alcoholic Version Of Butterbeer

If you are a grown-up or having an adult Harry Potter party you may want to have a butterbeer cocktail as well as the kid-friendly version.

The first way I learned to make butterbeer was to add some vegan butterscotch schnapps to cream soda and top it with some vegan whipped cream.

You could use vanilla vodka, or a dark rum, and butterscotch schnapps, this butterbeer syrup, or my slightly healthier vegan butterscotch sauce with a splash of plant-based creamer.

Use either butterscotch syrup or this Harry Potter butterbeer syrup in your cocktail. Add some vanilla syrup to a vegan caramel vodka to make an alcoholic butterbeer if you want to skip the cup of cream soda.

Here some frequently asked questions and answers:

Dont Wait In Line At The Cart

HARRY POTTER BUTTERBEER RECIPE Butterbeer mug DIY

When you first enter the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, on of the first things you see is the big cart in the middle of the street selling butterbeer. Naturally it has a very long line in front of it. Instead, go into the Hogs Head Pub using rear entrance from the patio. For some reason, most people dont even notice that entrance. Its just to the right of the Three Broomsticks restaurant. Go into the back patio and enter from the rear. The line at the pub for butterbeer is very short, and there is the added advantage of being able to order a real English beer while youre at the pub too.

Should Butterbeer Be Cloudy Or Clear

Ive made it two ways to show you both options.

    • Filling the glasses with the ice cream or whipped cream first will give you more of a yellow-colored, foamy glass of butter beer thats a bit more traditional.
    • For a clear drink, combine the rum, butterscotch schnapps and cream soda first, then add whipped cream on top.

    Making Your Own Butterbeer

Considering the fact that Butterbeer was originally a fictional drink from a world with an obsessed fandom, it seems only right that it should be available to everyone, not just tourists with deep pockets.

Fortunately for those on a budget, plenty of recipes can be found online. The Spruce Eats offers a formula similar to hot buttered rum. Combine heavy cream, cinnamon, nutmeg, butterscotch sauce, and softened butter in a bowl. Whisk it, then chill it in the freezer. Next, add the chilled cream to a glass of vanilla cream soda and enjoy. If you want an alcoholic variety, spike it with rum or butterscotch schnapps. The Food Network offers a similar idea but reaches for condensed milk instead of heavy cream and lacks spices.

Another possible option for all you muggles out there who are maybe not as competent behind the bar as Madam Rosmerta? There is the magically named Flying Cauldron Butterscotch Beer. Produced by Reed’s, this non-alcoholic drink can purchased online and at national grocery chains like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s .

How To Make Butterbeer From Harry Potter

As mentioned, diy butterbeer is a super simple recipe.

So whats in butterbeer To prepare your recipe, you want to ensure you have about 1.5 cups of ice cubes, ½ a quart of vanilla ice cream, ½ cup of butterscotch flavoured ice cream topping and 24 oz. of cream soda. In a large blended, combine all of the ingredients.

You want to make sure that your blender is large enough to accommodate all of the ingredients, while also allowing for some room for bubbles. When you blend the carbonated cream soda.. You guessed it it bubbles up quite a bit. However, dont be alarmed.

If your recipe starts to bubble up a lot and you think its going to overflow just stop the blender and give it a good stir with a wooden spoon. The goal is to try and release a bit of the carbon dioxide from the cream soda, while still maintaining that delicious bubbly look.

Below weve outlined the ingredients required for this cold or frozen butterbeer ice cream recipe.
