Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone

The movie that started it all came in 2001, four years after the publication of the novel. In the film, a young boy named Harry Potter lived with his emotionally abusive aunt and uncle until he learned his parents were great wizards, and he received an invitation to begin studying at Hogwarts, a prestigious wizarding school.

Daniel Radcliffe took on the role of Harry Potter at the young age of 12, along with fellow child actors Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. The cast was rounded out by some of Britain’s top acting talent, and the film went on to an impressive $975 million at the box office for director Chris Columbus.

Why Are Harry Potter Books So Long

The most intense Harry Potter scene we never got to see

Harry Potter has also endured for such a long period of time because so many people grew up with him. By doing so, Rowling ensured that the child wizard will have followers for the rest of his life, who will most likely spread the word about him to everyone they know. Another factor contributing to Harry Potters long-lasting popularity is the fact that the series has a positive impact on individuals.

In 2000, after a seven-month search, lead actor Daniel Radcliffe was discovered by producer David Heyman and writer Steve Kloves seated just behind them in a theatre. In Heyman’s own words, “There sitting behind me was this boy with these big blue eyes. It was Dan Radcliffe. I remember my first impressions: He was curious and funny and so energetic. There was real generosity too, and sweetness. But at the same time he was really voracious and with hunger for knowledge of whatever kind.”

Radcliffe had already established himself as an actor in the 1999 BBC television production of David Copperfield in which he played the title role’s childhood years. Heyman persuaded Radcliffe’s parents to allow him to audition for the part of Harry Potter, which involved Radcliffe being filmed. Rowling was enthusiastic after viewing Radcliffe’s filmed test, saying she didn’t think there was a better choice for the part of Harry Potter.

Also in 2000, the then unknown British actors Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were selected from thousands of auditioning children to play the roles of Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, respectively. Their only previous acting experience was in school plays. Grint was eleven years old and Watson ten at the time they were cast.

Harry Potter And The Philosophers Stone

And heres where it all began: now two decades old, the first film in the Harry Potter franchise is a bona fide classic. If its hard to believe this film is now 20, its even hard to see just how little and cute Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint just were. In this first instalment, the 11-year-old Harry discovers hes the child of wizarding parents and sets off on his first fateful train trip from Platform Nine and Three Quarters to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Yes, some of the kids acting is a tiny bit wooden, but tell us you dont get the chills when you hear Hagrids iconic line: Youre a wizard, Harry. Were still patiently waiting for our Hogwarts letter in the post.

Comparison Of Each Book In The Series

Harry Potter Without CGI

First, well look at the number of words for each book in the series. The first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, has 76,944 words. It has fewer words than the other six books, making it the shortest book in the series. Since this was the first book, Rowling had more time to edit the book and make the writing more concise. Plus, she probably didnt want to make the first book too long, or the publisher might not have accepted it. She was a new author at that point. Publishers usually dont accept long novels from first-time authors.

In comparison, each of the other six books are longer, likely due to the initial success of the Philosophers’s Stone, which within its first two years had sold more than 300,000 copies in the U.K. alone. According to Wikipedia, the American version, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone remained on the New York Times bestseller list for 79 consecutive weeks.

Due to the sales of the first book, the publishersBloomsbury for the British version and Scholastic for the American versionwanted more books about the world of Harry Potter from Rowling. They were willing to accept longer books because they knew to follow up books would sell well. The word count figures for the other six books, in order:

  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: 76,944 words.

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: 198,227 words.

The Names Of The Houses At Hogwarts Were Originally Written On A Barf Bag

Rowling likes to write her first drafts in longhand, preferably in black ink. Sometimes she found herself inspired, but short on paper. So she wrote on anything she could find. She told Amazon UK that she used a truly novel paper substitute when she was concocting the name of the Hogwarts houses: The names of the Hogwarts Houses were created on the back of an aeroplane sick bag. Yes, it was empty.

So What’s The Recommended Reading Order

    lollapops: It All Ends 7.14...

Fortunately, Harry Potter isn’t one of those series like Star Wars has a sprawling number of canon novels, film novelizations, reference books, and comics to read. Instead, it’s a finite universe which makes catching up on it much easier. We recommend reading the main series chronologically so that you can see Harry and his friends grow up. Then if you’re still thirsting for more of the Wizarding World you can see where your interests most strongly lie , and start again there.

If you still havent read Harry Potter, just know that its never too late to start and even for those who have, youre never too old to go back and relive the magic.

How Many Pages Does Each Harry Potter Book Have How Long Is Each Movie Adaptation Is There A Relationship Between The Two

Its an interesting question: is there a pattern to how lengthy the Harry Potter books are vs. how long their movie adaptations are? Logic would dictate that the movies get lengthier as the source material does, but thats not always the way it shakes down. In fact, after laying the numbers out end to end, its revealed that the last four movies are shorter on average than the first four, despite the books becoming more complex. Behold:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone

    • Book: 310 pages

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

    • Book: 341 pages

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

    • Book: 435 pages

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

    • Book: 734 pages

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

    • Book: 870 pages

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

    • Book: 652 pages

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

    • Book: 759 pages
    • Part 1: 146 minutes
    • Part 2: 130 minutes

This reveals some weird facts. For example, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the longest of the movies, despite it being the second-shortest of the books. On the flip side, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the second-shortest of the movies, despite it being the lengthiest novel.
