Lets us all be very clear Sir Ian McKellen is not Sir Michael Gambon! Both the roles are just two wizards with long white beard wizard and immense powers. According to femalefirst.co.uk., McKellen says he gets pestered by Harry Potter fans who confuse his Lord of the Rings character Gandalf for Professor Dumbledore. Surprisingly McKellen also added that his fellow star and onscreen lookalike Dumbledore actor Michael Gambon, who played Harry Potter’s mentor in six films, has the same problem with LOTR fans thinking he’s Gandalf all the time.
Speaking on “David Tennant Does A Podcast With…’, McKellen said: “I used to be very shy, to go to a party to me was misery because I didn’t feel I could talk to anybody… When I should have been meeting people I’d be sitting in the corner waiting for it to be over.”

In 2002, Harris passed away in between the filming of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. McKellen opted not to replace him because apparently Harris had been critical of McKellens work, calling him technically brilliant, but passionless. Because of that nonsense statement, McKellen was turned off by the idea of taking over for the role.
When he died, he played Dumbledore, the wizard. I played the real wizard, McKellen said. When they called me up and said would I be interested in being in the Harry Potter films, they wouldnt say what part, I worked out what they were thinking. And I couldnt. I couldnt take over the part from an actor who Id known didnt approve of me.
Apart from the shade about playing a real wizard, I respect McKellens decision to ultimately not take on the role. He knew Harris wasnt a huge fan of his, and stepping into his shoes just didnt feel right. Plus, did he really need Harry Potter when he had The Lord of the Rings?
McKellen made the decision out of respect rather than bitterness or anger, and I doff my cap to him. That said, Im sure him playing Dumbledore would have been instantly iconic.
And even though McKellen didnt actually play Dumbledore, Im one of those people who always assumed he and Michael Gambon were one and the same. And it turns out, McKellen feels the same. When I see the posters of Mike Gambon I think sometimes it is me.

The likely answer to this is yes, but only if he had not been in the Lord of the Rings franchise. McKellen is a seasoned actor who has proven that he is capable of playing the role of a powerful wizard. His performance as Gandalf came across as caring and wise but still powerful and formidable. McKellen would have brought a calmness to the role that didn’t undermine Dumbledore’s somewhat eccentric behavior, similar to his Magneto but not as sinister. He also had the perfect look for the role, and the more refined Gandalf the White is a good indication of how his Dumbledore would have looked.
Gambon’s portrayal of Dumbledore was not necessarily bad, but his version of the character drastically shifted from the way Harris had done it. Harris played Dumbledore as a wise old man, whereas Gambon’s interpretation could often be aloof and just a little too cool. The anti-Gambon fans always bring up the scene in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire when Dumbledore grabs Harry by the shoulders and aggressively asks him if he put his name in the goblet of fire. Dumbledore’s gentle disposition was missing from Gambon’s performance, and this made him seem like the wrong fit.
