Study of Ancient Runes, more commonly known as Ancient Runes, is a generally theoretical subject that studies the ancient runic scripts. Because only Hermione studies it, little else is known about this subject, taught by Professor Bathsheda Babbling. In Deathly Hallows Dumbledore bequeaths his copy of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, which is written in ancient runes, to Hermione.

Magic In Harry Potter

In J. K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter series, magic is depicted as a supernatural force that can be used to override the usual laws of nature. Many fictional magical creatures exist in the series, while ordinary creatures also sometimes exhibit magical properties. Magical objects are also described. The small number of humans who are able to perform magic refer to the rest of the population, oblivious to the existence of magic, as “Muggles” in the United Kingdom and “No-Maj” in the United States.

In humans, magic or the lack thereof is an inborn attribute. It is usually inherited, carried on “dominant resilient genes”. Magic is the norm for the children of magical couples and less common in those of Muggles. Exceptions exist: those unable to do magic who are born to magical parents are known as Squibs, whereas a witch or wizard born to Muggle parents is known as a Muggle-born, or by the derogatory term “Mudblood”. While Muggle-borns are quite common, Squibs are extremely rare.

Rowling based many magical elements of the Harry Potter universe on real-world mythology and magic. She has described this as “a way of giving texture to the world”. The books present the idea that the Muggle interpretation of these stories is a distorted version of what goes on in the wizarding world.

List Of Magical Creatures Mentioned In The Film Series

In the Harry Potter universe, the Acromantula is a monstrous spider capable of human speech. It originated in Borneo, where it inhabits dense jungle. Its distinctive features include the thick black hair that covers its body; its legspan, which may reach up to fifteen feet; its pincers, which produce a distinctive clicking sound when the Acromantula is excited or angry; and a venomous secretion. The Acromantula is carnivorous and prefers large prey. It spins dome-shaped webs on the ground. The female is bigger than the male and may lay up to one hundred eggs at a time. Soft and white, these are as large as beach balls. The young hatch in six to eight weeks. Acromantula eggs are defined as Class A Non-Tradeable Goods by the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, meaning that severe penalties are attached to their importation or sale.

This beast is believed to be wizard-bred, possibly intended to guard wizard dwellings or treasure, as is often the case with magically bred monsters. Despite its near-human intelligence, the Acromantula is untrainable and highly dangerous to wizard and Muggle alike. Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts in his third year for possession of the Acromantula Aragog who was thought by Hogwarts teachers to be the monster in the Chamber of Secrets.

Principal Exceptions To Gamp’s Law Of Elemental Transfiguration

The Principal Exceptions to Gamp’s Law of Elemental Transfiguration is a magical theory mentioned by Hermione and later repeated by Ron in the final book. She explains that food is one of these: witches or wizards can cook and prepare food using magic, and even multiply it, but not create it out of nothing. There are numerous examples in the series of food appearing to have been conjured from nothing, such as the sudden materialisation of ingredients in the pots of Molly Weasley’s kitchen and when Professor McGonagall creates a self-refilling plate of sandwiches for Harry and Ron in Chamber of Secrets. In all cases, these events can be reasonably explained as food either being multiplied or transported from elsewhere. One example of the latter is banqueting at Hogwartsâthe food is prepared by elves in the kitchens and laid onto four replica tables, directly below the actual house tables in the Great Hall. The food is then magically transported to the tables.

This is the only exception mentioned explicitly in the series. However, Rowling herself has stated once in an interview that money is something wizards cannot simply materialise out of thin air, or the economic system of the wizarding world would then be gravely flawed and disrupted. While the Philosopher’s Stone does permit alchemy, this is portrayed as an extremely rare, even unique, object, whose owner does not exploit its powers.

    How Are Magical Creatures Classified

In the Wizarding universe, creatures are split into two categories, the magical and the non-magical creatures. The magical creatures are then classified by the Ministry of Magic into three distinct categories: Being, Beast, and Spirit.

According to the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them written by the wizarding worlds most famous magizoologist Newt Scamander, the difference between the three categories is quite simple:

a being was any creature that has sufficient intelligence to understand the laws of the magical community and to bear part of the responsibility in shaping those laws. Therefore, a Beast would be any creature that has not enough intelligence to understand or contribute to the laws of the wizarding world.

But what about ghosts? They used to be a wizard or witch before they died. According to Scamanders book, there was an exception made for ghosts since it would be insensitive to classify them as Beings when they are has-beens. So the third division of creatures was created, Spirits.

Within the Ministry of Magic, there are three divisions that regulate the affairs of each category: the Beast division, the Being division, and the Spirit division.

The Origins Of The Magical Creatures

The magical creatures that you love to see in both the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts movies, or read them in the books and screenplays, are a combination of J.K. Rowlings imagination, reality, and folklore.

Some creatures like the Werewolf, Vampires, Centaurs, Dragons, Unicorns, and Fairies are very common monsters that have even kept their muggle names in the wizarding universe. Other creatures like Kelpies and Merpeople had their names changed from the ones we recognize in the muggle world like a particular Kelpie that lives in the Loch Ness lake and is known as The Loch Ness Monster, and Merpeople are known to us as mermaids.

Creatures like Grindylows and Boggarts, for example, are part of Celtic and English folklore. Another example of folklore adapted into the wizarding world is that of the Greek myth of Cerberus. The story of the multi-headed dog was modified and turned into Hagrids three-headed dog, Fluffy, featured in Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone.
