Fictional Universe Of Harry Potter

The fictional universe of British author J. K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter series of fantasy novels comprises two distinct societies: the Wizarding World and the Muggle world. In the novels, the Muggle world is the world inhabited by the non-magical majority, with which the Wizarding world exists coextensively, albeit mostly remaining hidden from the non-magical humans. The plot of the series is set in 1990s Britain, but in a veiled and separate shadow society wherein magic is commonly used and practised, and those who can use it live in self-enforced seclusion, hiding their abilities from the rest of the world. The term “Wizarding World” refers to the global wizard community that lives hidden in parallel with the Muggle world the different terms refer to different communities within the same area rather than separate planets or worlds. Any new works taking place in this universe are released under the “J. K. Rowling’s Wizarding World” brand.

Also, many of the core blood purists will not accept you if you had a known muggle in your bloodline. Although Harry Potters parents are wizards, Lily Evans was born as a Muggle. Trunte75 said:I would have been muggle-born and none of my ancestry had ever heard of Hogwarts before I got the letter. I would have asked the sorting hat to put me in Gryffindor.

jadore_renard said:What do you mean if? *is in total denial* I am a muggle-born who has yet to receive their letter… I’m thinking the owl’s having some trouble flying to another continent xD Just kidding….I’d be a Hufflepuff, and like I already mentioned, a muggle born. I assume that would mean I’d have no magical ancestry.
SevSnapeForev said:I’d be a Muggle-Born. But, I’d be a bloody strong one, and proud of it! I would be sorted into Slytherin, probably, if the hat overlooked blood status. I would always be able to evade the snatchers )

Jkrowling On Blood Status Prejudice And Intolerance:

What is your Harry Potter blood

Entertainment Weekly, 9/7/2000One of Goblet‘s biggest themes is bigotry. It’s always been in your books, with the Hitlerlike Lord Voldemort and his followers prejudiced against Muggles . In book 4, Hermione tries to liberate the school’s worker elves, who’ve been indentured servants so long they lack desire for anything else. Why did you want to explore these themes?

Because bigotry is probably the thing I detest most. All forms of intolerance, the whole idea of “that which is different from me is necessary evil.” I really like to explore the idea that difference is equal and good. But there’s another idea that I like to explore, too. Oppressed groups are not, generally speaking, people who stand firmly together — no, sadly, they kind of subdivide among themselves and fight like hell. That’s human nature, so that’s what you see here. This world of wizards and witches, they’re already ostracized, and then within themselves, they’ve formed a loathsome pecking order.

Newsround interview:Book Four explores several themes – some we’ve seen before like prejudice in Chamber of Secrets. We see more of that with foreign students and people with different parentage. Is that something you’ve been wanting to explore?

    Voldemort’s a half-blood too…

    Laws Concerning Magical Creatures

In both the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and the film of the same name, laws governing magical creatures are often referenced. Like any laws, these are changed over time and vary from country to country.

There are three distinct definitions for all magical creatures given in the Fantastic Beasts book, which are “Beasts”, “Beings” and “Spirits” which were defined in 1811 by the British Minister for Magic. “Beings” are defined as “any creature that has sufficient intelligence to understand the laws of the magical community and to bear part of the responsibility in shaping those laws”.

Laws have been created surrounding the management of magical creatures, largely for the purposes of their protection, but also to protect wizards from dangerous creatures, govern ownership of certain creatures, and also to hide them from the Muggle world. In the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film, the political climate of the wizarding community at the time saw a blanket ban on possessing all magical creatures.

The I Newsletter Cut Through The Noise

Ms Rowling said she had invented the idea that some wizards were not considered to be pure, and realised the similarities with the Nazis beliefs only afterwards when she visited a museum dedicated to the Holocaust, in which six million Jewish people died.

Her decision to talk about such a sensitive issue was welcomed by an education officer at The Jewish Museum, who said the stories could be used to help children deal with racism in the playground.

Ms Rowling, writing on the website she set up as a way of responding to the thousands of questions and requests she receives from all over the world, said she had been asked why people such as Harry Potter were called half-blood even though both their parents were magical.

She replied: The expressions pure-blood, half-blood and muggle-born have been coined by people to whom these distinctions matter and express their originators prejudices.

As far as somebody like Lucius Malfoy is concerned, for instance, a muggle-born is as bad as a muggle. Therefore Harry would be considered only half-wizard because of his mothers grandparents.

Ms Rowling then explained how she had discovered that this fictional prejudice held by some wizards against non-magical people bore a strong resemblance to the way the Nazis thought.

If you think this is far-fetched, look at some of the real charts the Nazis used to show what constituted Aryan or Jewish blood, she said.

    Other Forms Of Communication

Apart from the fake Galleons enchanted by Hermione for Dumbledores Army, there are a few other methods of closed-channel communications used in the books and films. Subjects painted into wizarding portraits are frequently used to carry messages between locations where their portraits hang. Phineas Nigellus is used to send messages between Dumbledores office and his other portrait in Grimmauld Place. Hermione takes Phineas from Grimmauld Place during Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and uses Phineas to obtain information about events at Hogwarts. Dumbledore also uses two other former headmasters in a similar fashion when Arthur Weasley is attacked by Nagini in the Ministry of Magic. A portrait is also seen carrying messages between the Minister for Magic and the Muggle Prime Minister in the opening of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Another form of closed communication used in the books and films is a set of mirrors which belonged to Sirius Black. Sirius gives Harry one mirror in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, with a note explaining to Harry that Sirius and James Potter used to use the mirrors to talk to each other when they were put in separate detentions. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry uses a shard of his broken mirror to call for help from the Malfoys cellar, and later finds out that Aberforth Dumbledore had been watching over Harry using Sirius mirror, which he obtained from Mundungus Fletcher.
