Who Is Professor Snape In Harry Potter

Don't Miss

He Was Possibly The Only Death Eater To Conjure A Patronus

Professor Snape (Harry Potter Song)

According to Wizarding World, a Patronus is generated through “memories of happiness and hope.” Because of this, there are few dark wizards who can conjure them.

As far as readers and viewers know, Snape was the only Death Eater to cast a Patronus spell throughout the series. Snape anonymously sent a silver doe into the Forest of Dean to help Harry with his mission in the final book/movie.

Since his happiest and most loving memories were with Harry’s mother, Lily, his Patronus took the same form as hers which is what made Harry follow it in the first place.

However, Snape isn’t the only villainous character in the series that uses a Patronus. Dolores Umbridge also casts a Patronus during “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.”

Harry Once Spent An Evening In Snapes Familys Home Town

Snape was a huge part of Harrys life, from his younger days thinking Snape was evil to his adult days of realising the truth about Snape, even naming his son Albus Severus in his honour.

Little did Harry know that he once spent an evening in Snapes childhood town, Cokeworth, before even having met him. This is one of the places the Dursleys escape to when fleeing from the influx of Harrys Hogwarts letters but also where Petunia grew up with her sister, Lily. And who else did they grow up with? Severus Snape, of course. When Aunt Petunia refers to an awful boy from her childhood with Lily, it took us a while to realise she was talking about Snape not Lilys future husband James Potter.

We revisit Cokeworth in the later books, where Severus makes an Unbreakable Vow with Bellatrix and Narcissa.

His Duel With Minerva Mcgonagall May Be An Unexpected Stroke Of Genius

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Severus becomes the headmaster of Hogwarts, ruling the school in Voldemorts name. His tenure doesnt last, as he is eventually ousted from the school. The incident is quite different in the books, as several members of the staff team up to take Severus down.

In the movies, it is only Minerva McGonagall who confronts him. In the intense duel that follows, Snape manages to deflect Minervas fiery spell straight into the two nearby Death Eaters, the Carrow twins, before making his escape. Its hard to know if this was on purpose, but it certainly seems like something Snape would do.

Harry Potters Resemblance To His Parents Gives Severus Snape Ptsd

The biggest argument fans use to prove Severus Snapes villainy is his clear dislike of Harry Potter. The professor is feared by most non-Slytherin students due to his staunch disciplinary tactics and ominous aura, but throughout the series, he has shown a particular disdain toward the boy and everything he stands for.

Severus Snapes unpleasant demeanor toward Harry Potter is not out of blind hatred. Truly, it is out of an inner conflict that rests within himself.

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Severus Snapes memories reveal that he fell in love with Harrys mother Lily at a young age, even before they both attended Hogwarts. He grew bitter upon learning that Lily preferred James Potter, a man who publicly ridiculed and humiliated him as a student, over him.

It is said by many that Harry Potter shares a distinct resemblance to his father, but also has his mothers eyes. Every time Severus Snape looked at Harry, he saw both a man he hated and the woman he loved. The burden this perfect storm of memories would conjure is unimaginable for most of us.

The late Alan Rickman was actually one of the few people other than J.K. Rowling to learn about Severus Snapes secrets long before the seventh Harry Potter book had even been published. With his wicked snarl and menacing tone, he made it easy for one to assume he was an agent or treachery, all the while knowing the truth. It makes for a perfect portrayal.

Why Severus Snape From Harry Potter Is A Good Person

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

Though Severus Snape is a difficult character to figure out at times, he does have his moments of goodness. For example, in Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, it turns out that Snape had been protecting Harry when Professor Quirrell was trying to knock him off of his broom. Snape also helped Harry learn Occlumency to keep Voldemort out of his head. Though neither he nor Harry really enjoyed the Occlumency lessons, they were important for Harry in his fight against Voldemort.

Snape also did what he could to prevent Dolores Umbridge from using Veritaserum to interrogate students. During Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Snape uses his Patronus to lead Harry to the sword of Gryffindor. Without this sword, Harry would not have been able to continue destroying Voldemorts Horcruxes. In the same story, Snape gives Harry his memories before he dies. These memories contain information that Harry needs to defeat Voldemort.

The memories also reveal that Snape was a double agent, helping Dumbledore and the Order of the Phoenix due to his love for Harrys mother Lily. After Voldemort killed her, Snape secretly changed sides and agreed to help Dumbledore protect Harry from Voldemort. With all of this, it seems that the answer is clear: Snape is a good person. Unfortunately, things are a lot more complicated than they appear.

Snape’s Legacy Lives On

After giving his life to defeat Voldemort, Harry is able to return to the realm of the living and face Voldemort one last time, and as the true master of the Elder Wand, he brings the Dark Lord down for good. In the aftermath of the battle, Harry gets the chance to live out his life, get married, and have children, and his second youngest son, Albus Severus, carries on Snape’s legacy, especially as Harry tells his son that he named him for two of the bravest men he’d ever met.

Ultimately, Albus Severus as detailed in the Tony Award-winning play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is sorted into Slytherin just like one of this two namesakes, eventually becoming close friends with Scorpius Malfoy and setting off on a time-bending adventure befitting his father and both of the men for whom he was named. Snape may have been a villain throughout his life, but Harry made sure to remember him as a hero.

Severus Snape’s True Allegiance

Rather than attending Hogwarts for his seventh and final year, Harry continues the work he started with Dumbledore and hunts down Voldemort’s horcruxes, objects containing pieces of the Dark Lord’s soul. However, what he doesn’t know is that Snape is secretly helping him.

Now Voldemort’s apparent right-hand man, Snape is named the new headmaster of Hogwarts, which puts him in the perfect position to silently help Harry with the aid of Dumbledore’s moving portrait, painted after his death. With Dumbledore’s help, Snape manages to hide the Sword of Gryffindor in a forest for Harry to find, enabling him to destroy horcruxes and keep track of Harry in general, quietly assisting him in his mission to weaken Voldemort enough to finally bring him down. While all of this is going on, Snape’s master is seeking out the Elder Wand, the wizarding world’s most powerful wand and one of the legendary Deathly Hallows, to make sure he’s undefeatable when the time comes to face off against Harry once and for all.

James Saved Snape’s Life

James, Sirius, Remus and Peter nicknamed themselves ‘The Marauders.’ Somewhat bafflingly, ThePrisoner of Azkaban movie doesn’t touch too much on this. But the book of the same name does and, in it, it’s revealed that James actually saved Snape’s life during their time at Hogwarts.

Sirius tricked Snape into trying to enter the Whomping Willow, where he encountered Lupin transformed into a werewolf. When James gets wind of this, he then intervenes and saves his Slytherin rival from a horrible fate. This is to save his own skin more than anything but it’s good of him, nonetheless.

Alan Rickman Harry Potter’s Infamous Snape Dies At 69

The legendary actor who won millions of fans worldwide as Professor Severus Snape has died of cancer.

Alan Rickman’s portrayal of Professor Severus Snape won him acclaim.

Alan Rickman, best known as the scowling Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films, died of cancer Thursday at age 69.

The British actor, also known for his roles in “Galaxy Quest,” “Die Hard” and “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” was “surrounded by family and friends” in London when he died, according to the Guardian.

Rickman was the kind of actor who made playing villains look easy. His portrayal of scoundrels includes Hans Gruber in “Die Hard,” the Sheriff of Nottingham in “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves,” Elliott Marston in “Quigley Down Under,” Judge Turpin in “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” and the virtually un-killable Rasputin in the TV movie “Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny.”

Snape Took The Padfoot Warning Seriously

In TheOrder of the Phoenix movie, Harry tries to relay a message to Snape while being interrogated by Dolores Umbridge. He refers to Sirius as Padfoot and indicates that he believes Voldemort is holding his godfather hostage, having seen a vision of his father’s best friend being tortured inside the Ministry of Magic.

Fans of the movie could be forgiven for thinking Snape completely ignored Harry. But devotees of the book know that Snape did register the message, and he was the reason the Order traveled to the Department of Mysteries to come to his rescue. Tragically, Sirius dies while playing the hero, struck in the heart with a curse fired from Bellatrix Lestrange.

Rita Skeeter Probably Wrote A Tell

Rita Skeeter is a journalist and author in the Wizarding World known for her sensationalized tell-alls, including “The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore.”

In a 2007 interview with Bloomsbury, Rowling joked that Skeeter would probably have gone on to write a biography titled “Snape: Scoundrel or Saint?” after the character’s death.

Severus Snape Had A Troubled Childhood

Born to Muggle Tobias Snape and witch Ellen Prince, young Severus Snape has a difficult childhood due to a strained and often angry relationship between his parents, which Harry personally witnesses when he accidentally glimpses one of Snape’s private childhood memories. However, Snape’s life takes a turn when he meets a young Lily Evans, who lives nearby. Quickly, the two become close friends, and Snape tells Lily, a Muggle-born witch, about Hogwarts and their future there together.

Despite Snape and Lily’s bond, they still argue, especially when her sister, Petunia Harry’s bitter Muggle aunt gets involved. Ultimately, the tension between Snape, Lily, and Petunia comes to a head when Petunia, jealous of Snape’s and Lily’s respective magical abilities, spies on the two friends. When Snape accidentally injures Petunia using magic, she calls Lily a “freak,” while Lily reveals that she and Snape saw a letter that Petunia wrote, begging Hogwarts to accept her as a student. By then, the damage is done, and Lily and Petunia are divided forever, thanks partly to Snape.

    Acting Was An Inevitability

Rickman was born in 1946 to a working-class West London family. Despite an early interest in acting, he studied graphic design in college and owned a design business with friends after graduating.

In 1971, at the age of 25, he applied to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, one of the oldest acting schools in England.

There was an inevitability about my being an actor since about the age of 7, but there were other roads that had to be traveled first, Biography.com quoted him as saying.

In 1978, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, followed by roles in British television and theater.

In 1985, he won the role of Le Vicomte de Valmont in the stage version of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, his first major villain and the breakthrough role for which he was nominated for a Tony Award in 1988.

Later that year, he went to Hollywood to try his hand at film acting. Despite not knowing much about the film business, he was offered the Die Hard role immediately.

Id never made a film before, but I was extremely cheap, he said in the BAFTA interview.

And despite almost rejecting Die Hard, he said, the progressive storyline won him over.

Every single black character in that film is positive and highly intelligent, he said. So, 28 years ago, thats quite revolutionary, and quietly so.

Playing Gruber gave rise to the notion of Rickman as master of villainous roles, one at which he often bristled.

The exclamation was trending Thursday on Twitter in tribute to Rickman.

    Life Outside Of Classes

Many Hogwarts professors resided at the school during the school year, though this was not always the case. During the 1980s, Minerva McGonagall owned a cottage in nearby Hogsmeade with her husband, later moving out after his death. A teacher could also visit a home by means of Apparition, the Floo Network, or a Portkey. In the summer of 1996, Severus Snape returned to his childhood house in Spinner’s End.

Those who remained at the school throughout the night seemed to have private quarters that were near or attached to their offices. On at least one occasion, Professor McGonagall could hear the noise of a party in the Gryffindor common room from wherever she was sleeping, indicating the she, as Gryffindor Head of House, may have had quarters within Gryffindor Tower.

Professors typically ate meals with the students in the Great Hall, but this was not required. Sybill Trelawney often preferred to eat alone in her classroom. When Harry Potter attended his first Divination class with her in 1993, she mentioned that some of the students might not have seen her before.

During the second term of each year, a Head of House would hold career counselling meetings with each of their fifth-year students, advising them on what N.E.W.T.-level classes they should take in preparation for their desired careers.

When a weekend Apparition course took place at the school, a Head of House would attend and help oversee the participating students from their House.

Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone

All The Times Severus Snape Protected Harry Potter

Snape first appears in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, shortly after Harry arrives at Hogwarts. He is the school’s Potions Master, though he is widely rumoured to covet the Defence Against the Dark Arts post. Snape himself confirms the rumour in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Snape is a sinister and malicious teacher who makes frequent snide and disparaging remarks at Harry’s expense. He quickly becomes the primary antagonist of the book, as Harry suspects him of plotting to steal the Philosopher’s Stone, and of attempting to kill him. Only the climax of the book reveals that Professor Quirrell, in league with Lord Voldemort, is the real enemy Snape, suspicious of Quirrell, had been looking out for Harry throughout the book. In the final chapter, Dumbledore suggests that because Harry’s father James had saved Snape’s life when they were both students, even though the two detested each other, Snape felt responsible for Harry in return. As the final book reveals, this is not the full story. In any case, even after Quirrell’s true role is revealed, Harry retains feelings of suspicion and resentment towards Snape, and their relationship remains tense. Snape’s behaviour and attitude towards Harry also remain unchanged.

Snape Pretty Much Fits The Description Of A Potions Master To A T

It’s widely known by Hogwarts students and professors that Snape wanted to be the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, not Potions.

But based on the description of the position on Wizarding World, it seems like Snape was destined for the role.

The site reads, “The popular idea of a Potions expert within the wizarding community is of a brooding, slow-burning personality.”

Although we know he wasn’t always this way, Snape seemed to have grown into the position quite comfortably by Harry’s first year.
