Why Did Jk Rowling Write Harry Potter

Why Did Harry Name His Child After Severus Snape

Why J.K Rowling Didn’t Write Harry Potter // With Phil Wilcox

In the Harry Potter fandom, jokes surrounding Harry’s terrible taste in baby names are everywhere. It’s almost as if Ginny had no say whatsoever in what they named their children. Okay, we get that Snape was redeemed by love and turned out to be a good person, but he still made Harry’s life a nightmare while in school. Really, Harry: the bravest man you knew? What about Hagrid? What about Remus?

According to J.K. Rowling, there’s more to this name choice than just at the surface level. It all comes down to Snape sacrificing his life. “Snape died for Harry out of love for Lily,” she said. “Harry paid him tribute in forgiveness and gratitude.” If Harry can let go of his grudge against Snape, then perhaps some of the more incredulous fans should, too.

Room 552 At The Balmoral Hotel

Address: 1 Princes Street, Edinburgh EH2 2EQWebsite:

JK Rowling finished the seventh and final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, at the Balmoral Hotel. The Balmoral Hotel is a 5-star 19th century luxury hotel located next to the Waverley train station in Edinburgh. Rowling said she was feeling distracted at home and wanted to get away for a little while to finish the ending of her book. She managed to work in a hotel suite here and finish the book in secret with very few people knowing she was staying here.

After finishing the book, she famously graffitied a marble bust of the god Hermes. She scribbled the following on the bust: âJK Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in this room on 11th Jan 2007â. Not surprisingly, Rowling did not get into any trouble for her vandalism and in fact, the bust is now proudly displayed in the suite behind glass. The suite was later renamed the JK Rowling Suite.

The Balmoral Hotel is a hotel and anyone can stay here for a price . You can even stay in the same room as the famous author. This beautiful suite is priced at about £1,000 a night and the outside of the door is decorated with an owl and a small golden sign bearing the name The J.K. Rowling Suite. Of course, you can book a regular room for much less!

The True Nature Of Creativity

One of the things I love most about Rowlings story is the colossal gap between the public perception of her creative process and the reality. She didnt just get struck by lightning. She didnt win the creative lottery.

She toiled for years to create something great. Rowling planned, outlined, and developed reference materials, going through endless iterations and drafts to get her story and her characters just right. She built the universe subplot by subplot, draft by draft, and scene by scene.

And the result, of course, was Harry Potter.

The true story of the creation of Harry Potter should leave you feeling empowered. The way to create something amazing isnt to wait for it to be delivered to your brain fully formed. Creativity isnt something that magically drops from the sky, its a muscle that can be trained through hard work and dedication. You dont need to be a wizard to create something great. You just have to be willing to work your wand off.

JK Rowling reveals why she did not use her real name on ...

A truthful tour of HP inspirations would involve a stationery guide pointing a stick at a picture of my head, which would be zero fun and nobody would buy tickets. If Id genuinely been inspired by every old building, creepy alleyway, pub, graveyard and 1/2

underpass thats claimed, Id have spent my late 20s on a non-stop road trip between locations and I promise I didnt. I was mostly sitting in places I could get a cheap coffee/could afford the rent & making it all up. 2/2

Various other places claim to be sources of inspiration for Rowling owing, presumably, to their proximity to locations Rowling is known to have lived at previously or visited. One of these is Livraria Lello – a bookstore in Oporto, Portugal. The store has an impressive history, and has long speculated to be an inspiration for the Hogwarts library owing to the authors time living in the city. Rowling said that though she wishes shed visited the library, she knew nothing of its existence, and confirmed it has nothing to do with Hogwarts!

Livraria Lello, Oporto, long known to locals and tourists in the area as an inspiration for J.K. … Rowling, a claim now debunked by the ‘Harry Potter’ author.

Im laughing here. Before I started this thread I had no idea how many different streets were claiming to be the inspiration for Diagon Alley, but this is the first time Ive seen Knockturn Alley! Neither was based on any real place.

Then She Released A Treasure Trove Of Trivia

Rowling had long promised an encyclopedia that would index every factoid from her wide-ranging magical universe. In late 2011, it came in a different form than expected: as a website. Pottermore launched as a sort of hybrid game and “Harry Potter” Wikipedia, where users could sign up, get sorted into a Hogwarts house, and win points while also reading bits of information about different elements of the “Harry Potter” universe.

Some of the entries were illuminating, like the tragic backstory on Professor McGonagall. Others, like the ingredients that go into different potions, were more trivial. Still, it delighted hardcore fans. Since 2011, Pottermore has moved away from the game component and acted more as a depository for Rowling’s material. She’s expanded it, and added things like short stories about the founding of Ilvermorny, the American wizarding school, and a family history for Harry Potter.

Harry Potter And Beyond

Rowling’s publisher, Bloomsbury Publishing, wanted to use initials on the cover of the Harry Potter books, suggesting that if they used an obviously female name, the target group of young boys might be reluctant to buy them. Since Rowling didn’t have a middle name she chose to adopt her paternal grandmother’s name, Kathleen , for the middle initial.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was a huge success, and she has thus far published six sequels. The sales made her a multi-millionaire, and in 2001, she purchased a luxurious 19th-century mansion, Killiechassie House, on the banks of the River Tay in Perthshire, Scotland, where she married her second husband, Dr Neil Murray, on 26 December 2001.

Rowling’s appearance as herself on The Simpsons

In late 2003, she was approached by television producer Russell T. Davies to contribute an episode to the British television science-fiction series Doctor Who. Although she was “amused by the suggestion”, she turned the offer down, as she was busy working on the next novel in the Potter series. On 20 December 2004, she announced that the sixth Harry Potter book would be released on 16 July 2005.

Rowling has also made a guest appearance as herself on the American cartoon show The Simpsons, in a special British-themed episode entitled “The Regina Monologues“.

In June 5, 2008, J. K. Rowling was the keynote speaker for Harvard University Commencement.

The Next Year Rowling Released Her First Non

The release of “A Casual Vacancy” was anticipated with some uncertainty and trepidation. It was said to be about local politics in a small British town, and be decidedly about adult life and sex and other stuff that never made it into the books she wrote about child wizards. When it was released in September 2012, the reactions were mixed but mostly positive. Some dismissed it as an example of the limits of Rowling’s imagination, others praised it for an incisive, if sprawling, look at social issues that effect people living in the U.K.

Jk Rowling Confirms Where The First Harry Potter Book Was Really Written

She revealed the true birthplace of Hogwarts, quidditch and key parts of the novels

JK Rowling has revealed the true birth place of the Harry Potter books in a series of myth-busting tweets.

And it blows everything out of the water on those supposed landmarks in Edinburgh and beyond.

The Elephant House in Edinburgh claims on its website that it was “made famous as the place of inspiration to writers such as JK. Rowling, who sat writing much of her early novels in the back room overlooking Edinburgh Castle.”

But, speaking of that cafe, JK Rowling said: “I was thinking of putting a section on my website about all the alleged inspirations and birthplaces of Potter.

“Id been writing Potter for several years before I ever set foot in this cafe, so its not the birthplace, but I *did* write in there so well let them off!”

She revealed that the first time she put pen to paper on the Potter novels was in London.

She explained: “This is the true birthplace of Harry Potter, if you define ‘birthplace’ as the spot where I put pen to paper for the first time.* I was renting a room in a flat over what was then a sports shop.

“The first bricks of Hogwarts were laid in a flat in Clapham Junction.”

She added: “If you define the birthplace of Harry Potter as the moment when I had the initial idea, then it was a Manchester-London train. But I’m perennially amused by the idea that Hogwarts was directly inspired by beautiful places I saw or visited, because it’s so far from the truth.”

At 26 She Moved To Portugal To Teach English There She Got Married And Had A Daughter

Fed up with secretary work, Rowling moved to Porto, Portugal, and taught English to students. There, she met and married Portuguese television journalist Jorge Arantes and had a child, Jessica named afterJessica Mitford, one of her favorite authors in July 1993. By November of 1993, the couple had separated.

In Porto, Rowling started a “book was about a boy who found out he was a wizard and was sent off to wizard school.” When she moved back to Britain, at the end of 1993, she had “half a suitcase was full of papers covered with stories about Harry Potter.”

As every fan knows, there is something about coming to the end of a film, book, or TV series, and still having that insatiable desire to consume more*. The love of Harry Potter runs deep here, and though the books do well to give us a resolute story, that does actually end, it still isnt enough to fill that unquenchable hole in the depth of ones stomach.

A Flat In Clapham Junction

When it comes to where Harry Potter was actually born, Rowling credits that to a location in Clapham Junction, an area in the UK known for its busy transportation hub.

This is the true birthplace of Harry Potter, if you define birthplace as the spot where I put pen to paper for the first time, the author wrote, sharing a picture of a Flight Center. I was renting a room in a flat over what was then a sports shop. The first bricks of Hogwarts were laid in a flat in Clapham Junction.

Inspiration And Mother’s Death

J.K. Rowling Reveals Harry Potter

Rowling worked as a researcher and bilingual secretary in London for Amnesty International, then moved with her boyfriend to Manchester where she worked at the Chamber of Commerce. In 1990, she was on a four-hour delayed train trip from Manchester to London when the idea “came fully formed” into her mind for a story of a young boy attending a school of wizardry. When she reached her Clapham Junction flat, she began to write immediately.

In December 1990, Rowling’s mother Anne died after suffering from multiple sclerosis for ten years. Rowling was writing Harry Potter at the time and had never told her mother about it. Her mother’s death heavily affected Rowling’s writing, and she channelled her own feelings of loss by writing about Harry’s grief in greater detail in the first book.

Its Been 10 Years Since Jk Rowling Finished Writing Deathly Hallows

Its been 10 years since J.K. Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

On 11 January 2007 the author stepped out of Edinburghs Balmoral hotel having completed the last novel in the Harry Potter series the culmination of 17 years of writing.

But that wasnt all J.K. Rowling wrote while she was there

Finished Hallows 9 yrs ago today. Celebrated by graffiti-ing a bust in my hotel room. Never do this. It’s wrong.

J.K. Rowling 11 January 2016

Before she checked out, J.K. Rowling signed the bust of Hermes in her room with the message: J.K. Rowling finished writing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in this room on 11th Jan 2007.

So why did J.K. Rowling come to finish her novel in this particular place? The story goes that while finishing Deathly Hallows, the author struggled to find some peace and quiet to write.

As she told Oprah Winfrey in 2010, For years and years and years I would just go to a café and sit in a different kind of noise and work. I thought, I can go to a quiet place so I came to this hotel because its a beautiful hotel but I didnt intend to stay here. But they were so nice to me here, and I think writers can be a little bit superstitious, and the first day of writing went well, so I kept coming back to this hotel and I ended up finishing the last of the Harry Potter books in this hotel.

Theres even an adorable owl knocker on the outside of the door. Were sure Hedwig would be proud.

J. K. Rowling was stuck on the train from Manchester to London. The train was delayed, and it was looking less and less likely shed reach London on time. Her mind started to wander. Then, as she later told The New York Times, It was the most incredible feeling out of nowhere, it just fell from above. Suddenly the ideas for the characters inhabiting a magical world began filling her brain, starting with Harry Potter. I could see Harry very clearly this scrawny little boy, and it was the most physical rush of excitement. Ive never felt that excited about anything to do with writing. Ive never had an idea that gave me such a physical response.

Rowling continued, By the end of that train journey I knew it was going to be a seven-book series. I know thats extraordinarily arrogant for somebody who had never been published but thats how it came to me.

J K Rowling on how she created Harry Potter

Instead of outsourcing screenplay duties to Steve Kloves, who wrote the “Harry Potter” movies, Rowling wrote the screenplay for “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” herself. It takes place 70 years earlier than “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” and concerns the adventures of Newt Scamander, a “magizoologist” whose magical animals escape his enchanted briefcase while he’s on a trip in New York.

How J K Rowling Became Voldemort

The backlash against the Harry Pottercreator is a growing pain of her fandom.

It has taken two decades, but I am finally ready to admit that I was the worlds most annoying teenager. My parents are Catholic, and I used to delight in peppering them with trollish questions, preferably several hours into a long car journey. Why does the Mass service refer to God as he and father? was a favorite. Does God have a Y chromosome, then? Does God have, like, testicles? I was openly dismissive about transubstantiation, by which the host is consecrated, and according to Catholic doctrine, literally turns from mere bread into the body of Christ. But all the atoms stay the same! I would insist. That makes no sense!

Younger Millennialsthose born around 1990, the same time as Harry Potters lead actors Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watsonfeel just as strongly about transgender rights. To many of them, it is the social-justice cause, their generations revolutionary idea. They see little difference between the objections of some older left-wing feminists to the idea that individuals alone decide their gender, and those of social conservatives: Both groups are reactionary, trapped in outdated concepts of what it means to be a man or a woman.
